Hair Fall??
Jun 6th, 2008 at 11:24pm

I was in the Philippines for 5 and a half years. I just arrived here in America like a month ago and my hair has been falling out like crazy since. It usually comes out in a considerable amounts when I just get out of the shower and when I comb my hair. I'm only 19 so I know it's not due to age or anything. Hmm. I tried different shampoos and right now I'm using something for hair fall control by Pantene PRO-V. I'm wondering though if it could be due to the climate change?? I mean I've already been here a month so my body should have adjusted back by now or whatever. (I really don't know if that has anything to do with it. I'm just guessing.) Or maybe it's because I took cold showers there ('cause they don't have hot water), and now I'm taking hot showers again. Any help would be absolutely great. I asked my doctor, but she really didn't help much. Just told me to take multivitamins. Which I really don't think that is the reason for my hair fall.

Thanks bunches.

Hair loss can be due to a number of factors:  general health, hormones, stress, genetics, and scalp condition.

You've just made a major life change moving to the US, so stress could be a factor.

If you've changed your eating habits as a result of the move, it could be that you are not getting all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to grow healthy hair.  A good multi-vitamin would certainly help in this area (and do no harm).

Your age would indicate that hormones are probably not a factor, and I'll take a wild guess that genetics probably isn't either.

You will see the most hair loss right after shampooing.  This is due to your massaging the scalp which will loosen any hair that is ready to fall out.  Try to be gentle on your scalp.  Don't use fingertips or fingernails.  Use the pads of your fingers to gently massage the shampoo onto the scalp.  Don't condition the scalp hair - this will only promote clogging the folicle's which can also cause hair to fall out prematurely.  Use conditioner only on the length of the hair (which is the hair that needs the conditioning the most).

You might also try vinegar rinses.  This can help remove any product buildup from the scalp and hair.  After shampooing, rinse with a vinegar/water solution, then condition.  The ratio of vinegar to water is up to you, I use a 1/4 cup of vinegar in a 2 liter bottle of water, then pour over the head (make sure to NOT get this in your eyes).

Try to minimize combing your hair when it is wet.  Hair is very stretchy when wet and will break easily.  Use a wide toothed comb that does not have seams that will scrape and damage your hair.

Hot water on the scalp is not necessary.  Try washing or at least rinsing your hair with the coolest temperature water you can handle.  This will close the cuticle of the hair which will help prevent moisture loss and make your hair more shiny.

I hope this helps a bit.  (Oh, and welcome to LongLocks!!)

Hello, Royalpain  Smiley

Are you using Pantene Restoratives Breakage Defense S&C? If so, these products are designed to prevent hair fall due to breakage, not other factors. It fortifies the hair shaft so it doesn't break, but does not prevent hair falling out at the scalp.

Your body may be adjusting to the change in your diet, so a multivitamin might help.

Also, do not use hot water on your hair or scalp. It's damaging. You might also want to hold off on combing your hair until after it's dry.

You know what helps me most with the "shedding" problem though? Scalp massages! Do them every night before bed or every morning before your shower. Use the pads of your fingers and don't go too fast. I like to put on some sort of relaxing music while I do this. And how long you do it is really up to you. Just be sure to massage every area of your scalp.

Anyway, HTH and welcome aboard.
