Largest City

What is the largest city in the world you have visited (landing at an airport and not getting out of the plane/jet does not count)?

I visited Los Angeles back in the early 70's and I was only 6 or 7 years old so I only remember some of it including going to Disneyland, going through one of the tunnels and visiting an uncle in the hills around the L.A. area.
Other cities I visited in California were San Diego, San Francisco and Oakland.

After I finally retire from work I am hoping to do a lot of traveling with my wife and I would like to vist such cities like London, Tokyo, Sydney, etc.

I'm not sure which of these is largest, but this is where I've been:

In the 90's:
Pittsburgh
Chicago
Austin
Atlanta
San Francisco

In 2003 I was in Virgina at the Naval base.
In 2006 - I was in Oklahoma City a couple times.

I also drove I-10 with a friend from Phoenix to Walt Disney World and back, and spent some time in Orlando Florida.
We stopped in San Antonio, Dallas, and Rayne Louisiana (which doesn't even come close to being called large!)
That was an awesome trip. We were in a jeep without the doors, or any of the back windows. Just the bikini top!
Yes - we were insane.

I also flew out to Atlanta to drive back to Phoenix when my brother moved back - basically same route.

Then I flew out to Pittsburgh and drove back with my mom after my grandparents died. She flew back and cleaned out the house. I flew back to help her drive back. I don't remember the exact route, but we went through Terra Houte (sp?) and Tulsa OK.

I used to come out of my shell once in a while.

Yes, I am aware that Disneyland is in Anaheim. I am just saying that the few things I remember about L.A. and the L.A. area include Disneyland not that Disneyland is part of L.A.

I also remember staying with an older cousin overnight at his house but I am not sure if he actually lived in the L.A. city limits or just in the area Undecided

I sometimes wish I could remember more about L.A., San Diego (the things I do remember are the Zoo and the apartment building which my older brother lived in), San Francisco (the trolley's, Lombard Street, China Town and two guys fist fighting in the middle of a street) and the only thing I remember about Oakland is where my older siter lived (technically it was Castro Valley).

One of these years I would love to visit northern California and see the giant redwood tree's.

Chicgo is the largest from your list and it is 3rd in the United States behind New York City and Los Angeles in population.

Wow, driving from Phoenix to northern Florida and back would be a long drive even if people took turns driving Shocked

The farthest I have driven is from Clancy, MT to Ft. Collins, CO and back.

Yup, sounds like a tourist's memory.    I suppose they are reasonably close, give or take an hour's drive. And you can travel between them pretty easily. But the natives don't associate the 2 that closely.

I do so recommend that! And if you happen to find yourself in central CA...particularly around Santa Cruz, be sure to take the Trees Of Mystery tour by train. So lovely! Oh, and Big Sur is beautiful. You'll need a telephoto lens.

I do have a good memory (and a photographic memory at times) but I was pretty young (6 or 7) so that was around 36 years ago and a few things I can remember like it was yesterday but most of that vacation has escaped my memory Roll Eyes

And some of the memories from Disneyland are still with me and I do remember being at the San Diego zoo but I can hardly remember seeing all of the animals there.
I can understand where a native of L.A. would be upset if a person said Disneyland was right in L.A. but that area is so huge to someone such as myself from a little town in Montana it would seem like one huge city Shocked

And being a little boy at the time I would not know or realize what a suburb is. Now that I am an adult I know the difference between urban, suburban and rural.
Here in Montana most of our larger cities are hundreds of miles apart and most of them do not have suburbs.

The Trees Of Mystery tour by train sounds very neat Cool

I have heard of Big Sur but I couldn't tell anyone for sure what it is?

Thank you for the suggestions but who knows when I am going to make it back to California (but I do hope to sometime before my lifetime is over).

lol My point exactly.  

Big Sur is a mountainous, heavily-wooded area in central CA. Like between San Simeon and Monterey. Absolutely beautiful. There are trees everywhere. It's a popular desitnation for campers and surfers. 
    And speaking of San Simeon, if you ever make it there, Hearst Castle is an absolute must.    A few little things to keep in mind if you do find your way to CA again.

But back on the subject of big cities, I was born & raised in San Diego, so LA is only about 3 hours away.

I drove there with a friend on the spur of the moment and stayed 3 days when I was 21. Ah, the spontainious actions of carefree youth.

I grew up near Dallas, #9 in the US in terms of population, #17 in terms of land area. I moved from there to San Antonio, #8 in terms of population (all of these are as of now, but might not have been at the time) and #14 in terms of area. I then moved to Houston, #4 in population and #9 in area. After that I went to Cairo, Egypt, 13th largest city in the world in terms of population. It is not that large in terms of area, but has a population density of over 37,000 per km, one of the highest in the world. It looks like it too! So I think it is safe to say I am a big city girl!

Oh, and I did visit my grandmother in Chicago when I was a very little girl, but I can't count New York because that was a matter of getting off the plane and buying a pack of gum just to say I had been there.

I have yet to visit California, but I really want to.
