HELP!!!!
Jul 10th, 2008 at 3:28am

I have religious beliefs that I don't cut my hair. I haven't cut it in about 12 years.  I have gotten about 3 perms in that time period--no trimming===my last being almost 3 years ago.

Problem.  My hair has thinned a lot lately.  It is breaking off like crazy.  I loose the most right after the shower and when I brush.  I try to do the more natural hair  products, use no poo method, etc. but I don't know what to do!   A friend thinks it might be my meds (zoloft and mirapex)...I don't know.. .I am a natural blonde, swim in the pool up to 3 times a week--but try to wet it and rinse with vinegar and deep condition every time...

I rarely use the hair dryer and try not to use heat stylers but a few times a month.  I wear it a variety of ways, high pony tail, low pony tail, but, part up, all up in clip, all the way down, head band.  I always condition and try to always go from bottom to top using wide tipped comb when wet, detangling brush when dry and boar bristle when tangles are out.  The only major products I use are shine serum and hairspray.

Hmmm...
Okay, so here's what I think happened.  Perms can damage hair a lot-- they're drying and the chemicals are harsh.  Since you can't cut your hair, you might just have to live with that-most people would just remove the damage, but for you that isn't an option.
Swimming in pools can also damage hair, but there are a couple things you can do to minimize future damage.
One of these is to oil/condition your hair well before swimming.  If possible, leave the oil/conditioner in while you are swimming (I think most people put their hair in a plastic bag, then put a swim cap over the top so the oil/conditioner stays in their hair and doesn't get in the pool).  Also, wash your hair as soon as possible after swimming.
I would also start oiling your hair regularly-- there are different options on how to do this, and different people do different things.  You can find a lot of info around here.
I think that's the best I can do for your situation--I don't have much experience with medicines or hair that breaks a lot.  Sorry.

Welcome to LongLocks!

I know other who do not cut their hair for religious reasons, but they do trim the split ends off on a regular basis.  Might this work for you?  You would not be changing your overall length - just the ends of individual hairs.

The perms are probably your biggest problem.  Been there, done that - never again.  Until all of the permed hair is gone (either by trimming or breakage), you will have more breakage.

You should also be VERY careful what you do with your hair when it is wet.  Wet hair is very stretchy - to the point that it will break.  I use a wide toothed comb on my hair when rinsing the conditioner from my hair and then don't touch it with a comb or brush until it is dry.  This limits the breakage of my very fine hair.

Conditioners and oils will help prevent breakage of the hair.  I highly recommend you try an oil on the permed hair.  You don't need much - just a drop rubbed between your palms, then "wipe" you hands down the length of your hair.  If you have fine hair - jojoba oil should work well - it is a very light oil.  If you have thicker hair you could try olive oil.

Good luck!
