New Dandruff Problem!? BACK WITH A VENGANCE!
Sep 12th, 2008 at 10:17am

I have never had dandruff ever in my life that I can remember.  I chalk this up to the fact that I have extremely oily skin/hair, and my scalp is NEVER dry, my roots are constantly oily.

A few months back, I remember noticing, or rather my sister noticed, some very large flakes of skin at my roots after we had been camping for a weekend.  I have never seen dandruff in such large pieces before (it was kind of gross) but I thought it was from being out in the sun all weekend (even though the sun never touches my scalp because of all the sun, and I wasn't sunburned in the least).  And I forgot about it.

My hair is rarely ever down lately.  Between living in SW Florida (where it is entirely too hot to wear one's hair down) and my constant battle with knotting, I just never wear my hair down unless I am sleeping or fresh out of the shower.  It is always always in a bun, occasionally a braid, but mostly a bun every day, all day.

When I brush my hair at night time before bed, I usually comb it backward, and therefor my part stay revealed, but every once in a while I will brush my middle part back into my hair because it looks nice if I am going to wear my hair down.  What I am getting at is that I don't look at my scalp very much.

So a few weeks back I remember doing my hair in the mirror and noticed all these tiny white flakes and thought OH NO! DANDRUFF!  But I, still thinking it impossible that I could possibly have dandruff, thought that maybe it was just a buildup of dirt and oil on my roots, because my hair needed a washing.

Well, last night, I was doing my hair to go over to my sister's and low and behold tiny white specks all throughout my roots!!  UGH!  It has GOT to be dandruff!

I don't know HOW on earth I could possibly have dandruff with such greasy hair and scalp!  Does anyone else have this problem?  Do other factors besides dryness cause Dandruff?  These are the answers I need to find.  Oh and also I use no product of any kind in my hair, save for jojoba oil on my ends.  I wash my hair once a week, oiling my ends VERY lightly as the week goes on, and then by the weekend its dirty and oily and needs a wash again.  Could NOT washing my hair lead to dandruff? I wash with different shampoos & conditioners, usually switching them around, and only a select few that don't have cones, r not as many cones, (until I can get around to ordering a shampoo bar).

HELP!

My first thought is that it's probably just build-up, not dandruff.

Try an ACV rinse.

Tara,

Oily scalps cause dandruff as well. Not just dry scalps.

Try doing vinegar rinses every day until the problem goes away.

I agree with Angel Spun, Tara, oily scalps do get dandruff.  Dont panic, do an ACV rinse for a while.  Then perhaps you may need to change something in your routine.

yeah I was doing ACV rinses at least once every other week before, but it's been months.  For some reason it slipped my mind, and that is most likely what is causing the issue.  I will try Acv rises for a few weeks and let you know!  Thanks everyone!

You can try a ACV rinse but if you can, try using a medicated product like Polytar. It smells awful but it has help quite a bit with my dandruff and my itchy scalp even when my scalp gets oily after not washing it for 3 days or more.

I always recommend coconut oil on teh scalp to cure dandruff (in the winter. If youre like me, the only way you get dandruff in the summer is if you have buildup or are overshampooing every day haha)
As soon as I figure out how to ACV rinse, I will be jumping on that boat along with all you ladies. I have never in my life run into such a confusing topic as the elusive ACV topic!!!! Seriously!!! Smiley

I can remember as a kid I used to have dandruff problems, and when my mom was taking good care of my hair she would shampoo my hair with head&shoulders, and it really helped my itchy scalp and dandruff.  Nowadays I still use head&shoulders shampoo.  I use  both the shampoo and conditioner, and they work tremendously well on my hair and scalp, and I have in between oily/dry hair and scalp.

I also really like too how nowadays with the H&S shampoos and conditioners they say it is gentle enough to use daily.  I've never tried using it daily but I will..  You see, H&S has all versions of S&C's.  They the shampoo itself, then they have shampoo and conditoner all in 1 mixed together, and the scent or smell is just grrrrrrreat!!!!!

But I'm getting like most of you ladies on here too of the ACV.  I just can't use to the idea but it sounds really wouderful though. Wink As I've been coming to the site I've been hearing and reading a lot of ACV's, and how they rinse away all product build-up, and really gives your hair a  beautiful gloss and shine.  I can just imagine.

alright.  I Acv'ed at every wash for a few weeks which seemed to lesson the problem, but not make it go away entirely.

However, I just switched to using a shampoo bar for the first time and I think that solved the problem.

I am more convinced now that it was buildup of oils and/or commercial shamp/cond stuff on my scalp moreso than actual dandruff and skin problems.

I just washed my hair yesterday and today I don't see any tiny white specs in my hair, but I know if I go a few days before washing it again (which I will) then they will appear, so I am pretty sure it must be buildup or dirt.

I try to brush my scalp well with my baorbristle brush, but it doesn't seem to help.

Which reminds me, lately my boar brsitle brush has been creating static cling in my hair when I brush with it.  I have been avoiding it for this reason, but my ends REALLY need the oils from my scalp and they are getting dry becuase of the lack of oils.

I thought boar bristle brushes were supposed to NOT create static?  What's going on!?  I am going to referance this topic in a new post.

I spoke too soon!  ACK!!!

I just washed my hair yesterday, and when I brushed it before the shower I noticed a LOT of dandruff, and not just little flecks of buildup like I thought it was, this was full blown, flaky, dandruff.  UGH!  So I decided to massage a little conditioner onto my scalp before shampoo bar-ing, and then I washed, I massaged well and massaged and massaged, thinking perhaps this will help loosen and get rid of the flakes.  It didn't!!
Today, the day after washing (which is normally my best hair day) I still have yucky flakes!  Some big!  And if I scratch my head it makes more (of course) so it's definitely without a doubt, dandruff.

Is it possible that I have a dry scalp even though I think it feels oily?  My scalp is greasy within 2 days of washing, which I thought was pretty oily, and I have oily skin and generally have never had a "drying out" problem.

Now I know winter is coming and all and the hair is drying, but I have had this problem for a few months now.  ACV rinses didn't fix it, nor has switching shampoo's to try to get rid of buildup.

It's got to be an issue with my scalp.  My health has not really changed, and I am in good health, so I don't think it's a health issue.  I am ordering a new shampoo bar soon and I will try one for dry scalp/hair, but I don't know if that will help or maybe compound the problem.   I can't wear my hair down and it's horrible!  Heck I can't even hide it when it's up now it is so bad all of a sudden!

Anyone know of any wonderful scalp re hydrating concoctions that are easy to put together?  I have been wanting to do some deep conditions lately but I just don't have ANY money to shop around for exotic ingredients right now.

I use jojoba oil in my hair sparingly, when it's dry, but I haven't tried massaging an oil directly on my scalp yet.  Olive oil makes my hair wonderful, and it's been a while since I have done a deep oil with it, but it's my scalp that's causing problems now and I am not sure that olive oil with help my scalp.  AAAAHHHH!

EDIT**

I just saw a reply to a post that someone had used baby shampoo to get rid of dandruff.  Anyone know anyhting about that?  I wonder whats in baby shampoo...

You may need to see a dermatologist for this.  I recently was having problems with itching and used Neem Therapy Shampoo & Conditioner and neem oil directly on the scalp.  This healed my scalp.  I bought it at my local health food store.

Good luck, Tara.  Changes in the seasons can really throw our skin into a tizzy.  I hope you can find a solution soon.

I hope so too!  The thing is I don't have an itchy scalp.  I don't have any sores, or redness, or rash, or itchiness, my scalp FEELS completely normal, but the flakes won't go away! /cry

I am going to try a few oil massages on my scalp, and if that doesn't work either, I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and use some kind of product on it, which I am trying to avoid >.<

EDIT**

There seem to be a lot of silly little "cures" for dandruff on the web, but I found these two which I will try tonight and tomorrow night.

Hot oil therapy is the best method to cure dandruff. Massage hot oil into the scalp at bedtime. Next morning an hour before the bath, rub lemon juice mixed with cosmetic
vinegar into the scalp with cotton wool. Wash your hair properly and as a last rinse use the juice of one lemon in a cup of hot water. Continue this treatment once or twice a week for three months.

Mix two tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar and six tablespoons of hot water. Dab this with cotton on the scalp and leave it overnight. Next morning wash the hair with a shampoo.
