October Challenge
Sep 30th, 2008 at 7:04pm

My hair is 15 inches long, collar bone length, reddish brown, and wavy.I love my hair, but have been having issues with the length.I can't put braids in all of my hair because of the numerous(annoying) layers.(I can, however , put in smaller braids all over the place)
I decieded about a week ago I had to do something to try and challenge myself while I wait tediously for my hair to hit 18 inches(eventually). So I came up with an idea:For the entire month of October I will only wear my hair in a ponytail, bun or some other form of an updo.No half updos only full on ones.

What do you think? Will it affect my growth?(doubtful but still...)Will it damage my hair?

I also plan on only taking it down to shower and sleep.Has anyone else ever done this?I want to try a new style everyday or at least a diffrent type of something once a week....depends on how creative I can get.

I'm off to think of new cool ways to torture my conscience.Cheesy

I've done something similar before, and I think it helped to take some stress off my hair for a good chunk of time.
A suggestion is to put jojoba oil on your ends before putting it into a bun (while still wet). Jojoba is very light and similar to your natural hair oil, and will help with split ends.
Good Luck!  Smiley

Thanks!I'll try to find some.
Question:Did you do braids when you did this?
I asked this question because ai wanted to make sure it wouldn't harm my hair by keeping it up like that.My hair is still a tad to short for full on braids(layers like crazy)and buns are kind of hard but i can make do.

hey there! Smiley

My hair is almost exactly the same length as yours, exept it is all one length. Ohhh, wait. I just read your ticker. You must be measuring a different way than I am, because I am definetly not that close to mid back. Meacuring form my hairline, my hair is about 14.5"-15". I think your idea is a good one, i've never thought of that before. I dont think it will affect your hair growth, though i once read that keeping hair in tight hairstyles pulls and makes it grow faster. Sounds like a completely ridiculous theory, but who knows? You'll have to share some of your hairstyles if you are doing a different one every day/week or something. Right  I'm having troubles figuring out any different hairstyles (with my very short hair) other than half-up, ponytail, bun, or pigtails.

Good luck!

A few years ago, I used to wear my hair up every day and I ended up with serious breakage.  Shocked  Just a little word of caution.

Really, Angel Spun? Huh I thought that wearing your hair up would have a good effect on the hair, because it protects it like when you do a bun.  I never really thought of it that way.  Isn't that why people wear their hair in ponytails or braided when they sleep?

Just make sure you dont tie your hair too tight, or add too much strain. Def. get the ouchless pony-tail holders!

I did, for over a year but not for any specfic reason other than I was fed up with all the grungy teenagers (peers at the time) around me so I went all out vintage, dress suits, buns or low and tidy ponytails.   I also used to comb and put my hair up before it was dry.  I just found that easier.  I don't know if my hair was damaged in high school (of course it was the time I had a perm) but your experience might be entirely different because we have different hairtypes.

I know better now and would do many things differently today but right now I'm quite happy with my layers and even had a few more added but they're still cut blunt, no razoring, no thinning in any way, and the shortest layer falls to my nape.  It probably wouldn't look that good in a finer straight hair type but it's great for early-mid 20th Cent. vintage styling and it's basically the cut most women had in the 1940s.  I just wear my hair straight though.

Putting pins in your hair all the time is damaging. Putting a hairtie in the same spot all the time is damaging. Putting any kind of tension on your hair for extended periods of time is damaging. Twisting your hair into a bun every day can even be damaging, whether it's wound tightly or not. Too many people have already found this out the hard way.

Some people do braid their hair before bed and have no problems with it. But anyone with fine hair should not do this because it can cause breakage.

Very true Angel!  I have fine hair and put it to bed loose in a hair cap. Wink   I love doing buns but only once in a while.  At work hair has to be pulled away form the face so I keep the front back but let the rest go sometimes.  I do not work in the food area so I am good.  I also wear a different style everyday Smiley

Well if I'm getting words of caution and nogos from the ladies with plenty of experience I don't think I'll do it.:/
Anyone know a similiar experiement that woudln't be damaging?Whenever I put my hair in braids(i can't put it all in one yet...yet)it gets really frizzy and knotted.

My birthday is coming up and all I want is long hair.

Smiley
actually a nice expensive shampoo and conditioner would be cool.My dad told me to make a list...suggestions?

Thank you everyone for the advice.I am actually wearing my hair up today in a loose ponytail because I'm painting my room.yay! Smiley

Aww, Fay. You'll get there, hon. Believe you me, all of us know the frustration of growing. That's a huge part of the journey.

No one's telling you what to do with your hair, love, nor would we dream of it. If you want to try updos every day, go right ahead. No one here wants to see you do something that would hurt your hair and thus impair your longhair dreams. We want you to succeed.  Wink

Oh, and if you do decide to try out an expensive S&C, I'd recommend either Biosilk or Back To Basics. I've always wanted to try them myself. My sister also really likes Enjoy products.

Oh, and good luck with the painting project.

Thanks.I know you guys aren't trying to tell me what to do.You're simply giving me much needed advice and I appreciate that a bunch.I just realized how very wrong my ticker is.Sad  I am only at like 15 inches and to be bsl i'd have to be at like 20(or more....!)so I do believe I have longer than I say I do.

Oh well I'll be an optimist for now.

Is there any easy way to braid my hair with layers that are at the shortest at my chin?

French braid(s) work best with layered hair.  I use aloe vera gel to tame the ends more and keep them in line with the braids, or braid the hair damp.
