My Pet Rats (pics)

Here are the girls!  The black one is named Smokey, whom I also call Piggi, and the tan one is named Suede, a.k.a Buffi.

...   ...

They're so cute!  In the second one you can see Suede's ruby eyes.

Wow...I actually have to admit that they're cute!  I would've never in a million years thought that I would use the word "cute" to describe rats. Shocked

I had rats and a cat when I was a teenager.  I'd only take the rats out to play with them when the cat was out of the room, of course, and when my mom was, too.  She was always so afraid they'd get loose and the cat would eat them, but of course rats need out-of-the-cage time more than most other rodents.  Sometimes Twinkle (the cat) would sit on the floor of my room staring at them in their cage.  She looked like a statue.

Rats are the sweetest and most sociable pets I've ever had.  (I've never had a dog, BTW)  All they do is lick my fingers.  And my ears.  And climb on my head, and try to take out all my hairties...

Hamsters are cute, but I never met one that didn't want to bite me.  Even pet hamsters that wouldn't bite their owners wanted my blood.

Hamsters that are raised for pet shops are most likely to bite.  Babies need to be handled early to condition them to humans.  Hamsters that I bred and raised never bit anyone.  Hamsters can be very tempremantal.  They also need a lot of exercise time - a wheel is not enough.  They need to climb and run.  Rats do make better pets, but most people don't realize that and instead sustaining their preconcieved notion that rats are dirty, ugly rodents (which they are in the "wild").  Rats that are raised as pets can be fun and friendly.

Aww!  They're adorable!

I just had to put down a pet mouse that I'd had for four years.  ::sniffle::  I think I might like to have a rat when I decide to get another pocket pet.
