Washing after oilings
Mar 25th, 2009 at 4:36pm

I do my ACV rinses regularly, and I oil a couple times a week. Lately my hair has been feeling a little dull. I don't think I need to clarify any more than I already do.. because in fact, my hair feels a little dry.
The only thing I could think of that is contributing to the dryness/dullness is the Pantene Classic Care shampoo I have been using to wash out my oil (It contains sulfates). This seems to be the best shampoo for me to get the oil/residue out, but I feel it may be over drying my hair. On days when I don't oil, I substitute ACV for shampoo or CO.
Any ideas as to what is causing the dryness?? Or suggestions for a new shampoo to wash out all the oil??

You might try adding a different shampoo to your routine.  An occassional change just might be what you need to liven things up a bit.

Maybe you are doing your ACV rinse a little TOO regularly?  I only do it as necessary, which is less than once a month.  Also, Pantene (for me) is the devil.  When I first used pantene (years ago now) my hair was amazing.  Just like in a commercial!  Then one day I was brushing it and my hair just started breaking off like uncooked spaghetti.  I did a little research, and it turns out a lot of people have issues with pantene.  In laymen's terms, cones (which there are a lot of in pantene) basically coat and cover the outside of your hair, which makes it feel and look amazing at first, but over time of coating the cones on your hair follicles the actual hair itself, under the blanket of crap, can't breathe or get moisture, so it just dries up until it's so brittle that it just breaks off like a tiny twig in the desert of your hair.

hmmm.. now I'm confused... wouldn't the extra ACV rinses break down the cones?  Huh

BikerBraid: I'm going to run to the drugstore right now and pick up a new shampoo to see if it can boost my hair a little bit!

Yes. Regular clarifying removes all types of residue, including cones. And actually, I do believe the "Pantene is evil" campaign was devised by salons in order to turn customers away from their biggest competitors (which happen to be Pantene). Scientists have actually documented an overall improvement in women's hair since cones were introduced decades ago.

That being said, I personally cannot use Pantene's opaque white shampoos (ie. Classic Clean) because they leave a dreadful greasy coating on the roots of my hair, making it look like I've not washed it in weeks. Tongue So this probably isn't what's drying out your hair.

You might try a good clarifying wash and some type of deep conditioning treatment just for a fresh start. Without knowing much about your routine, that's pretty much all I can suggest. Undecided HTH

Well, the only clarifying shampoo I've used was herbal essences degunkify. It's pretty good, so you can try that.  Smiley

Well, shampoo works as a clarifyer in its own right. It could be that using the shampoo is stripping your hair of the oils you use as well as your natural oils. I use Head & Shoulders Sensitive Care once a week and my hair does not dry out. Maybe if you use the shampoo less your hair will regain the lost oils?
