Tangles and Breakage
Nov 22nd, 2005 at 3:19pm

I have a really difficult time keeping my hair in a braid at night, it usually slips out of the hair tie (probably has something to do with some layering toward the ends that I’m trying to grow out), and I wake up with a giant mass of tangles.

And of course because my hair is so fine tangles equate to breakage.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Ollave Cheesy

I don't have fine hair, and my hair doesn't get tangly- i guess i don't move in my sleep much- but i have long layers, that keep escaping from the braid, so...and you may find this sort of wierd but it does work. Ok, I use old knee high tights, or regular tights that i cut 4" longer than my hair length, then cut about 3" down the length. I then braid, tie and put the braid in the 'sock' then take the two pieces that were cut down the length, and wrap once, or twice, and tie it securley.

I hope my explanation is clear, and that it might help you Smiley

That's a good idea, Beesan! I don't have fine hair either, but I know some people use a sleep cap. You could make a braid and then put on the cap. But the down sides are the potential of an elastic line on your forehead when you wake up and feeling silly with the cap on.  Tongue

Sleep cap or sock I think I’d feel silly wearing either.

But those are both great ideas that I hadn’t thought of.

I’ll look around for something I can try tonight and let you know how it goes.

Thanks! Smiley

Is there a way that you can just put your hair back into a simple ponytail?

This is what I used to do when my length was at its peak. I used a velvet scrunchie.

The reason your hair may come undone while you sleep could be because  1.) you have layers which may be coming unraveled because your hair tie is at the bottom of your lowest length,  2.) Fine hair is very slick, like satin, and your hair tie may simply slide right off in the middle of the night.

Also, if your hair is tangling badly (as fine hair is most prone to do), you may need to condition or oil more.

Hope that helps.  Smiley

I did too the first time i wore it-my mom nearly screamed Tongue- but your only going to bed, and it looks like a pony tale, plus it saves up time, effort, and damage the next morning.

I have fine hair that tangles very easily.  At night, I put my hair in a braid and either drop the braid into a sock and secure it with a scrunchie or I roll my braid around a sock and tie off the sock.  Either may look silly, but in the morning by hair has no tangles andit has wonderful waves!

Thank you all for the great ideas, I would have never thought of these things on my own! Smiley

Last night I braided my hair and put a sock over it. Fiancé made such a face that I burst out laughing. After being made fun of for ten minutes I took the sock off and rolled the braid around it (Just as Bikerbraid suggested).

I have quite a bit of breakage around the front and sides because I wore my hair in a tight French twist every day for I don’t know how long, over five years away. So although those shorter hairs did not stay contained the rest did. No tangles today!

Angel Spun: My hair is tangling badly! I have been oiling frequently, washing my hair less, and cutting off any split ends I find, but it hasn’t seemed to help with the tangles.

I’ve been thinking about my Aunt’s hair lately, (she’s always kept it waist length and it’s even finer than mine) it is always silky and never tangled—makes me wonder what I’m doing wrong…

Hmm, have you tried asking your aunt how she keeps her hair so nice? I have coarse hair, but it's at waist and I'm kind of curious how she keeps her hair from tangling.

I talked to my Aunt about her hair/lack of tangles.

She thinks the difference lies in the fact that her hair is stick straight while mine has an ever so slight wave.

She said that when she was younger her hair tangled easily but that as she’s gotten older it is no longer a problem.

Other than that she had no advice for me. So I have none to share. Sad

Would still love advice from all of you, thanks!

Thanks, Ollave! Why is it that some people with enviable hair don't do anything special to get it to look that way? lol

ETA: the "Thanks, Ollave!" was bugging me because it sounds so weird. What I meant to say is "even though you didn't get any tips from your aunt, thanks for asking her!" Okay, that makes more sense.

Ollave, wavy and curly hair tangles more easily 'cause the hairs wrap around each other with their pattern of wave/curl.  To keep the tangles out of my wavy hair I put it into two pigtails, braiding from the ears down.  My secret is mini scrunchies-they're smaller than full size so they don't pull out while I'm asleep.  You may want to end your braid higher up and oil just the ends below the scrunchie.

Good Luck!  Let us know what works out for you!!!

Juri: I know what you mean! Besides my Aunt I have two friends (sisters) who can grow their hair tailbone length without thought or trying. Oh well, someday…

Sakina: Thank you; I hadn’t considered the wave in my hair to be a factor of the tangles. So far for sleeping I’ve had luck the last few nights with a braid on top of my head that is wrapped around a sock, though I have been thinking of trying pigtail braids because I’m still getting some breakage around the front and sides. Time to go to the store for mini scrunchies!

French braiding could be an option.  Smiley French braid is supposed to accommodate layers more easily than a regular braid. Also, if you haven't practiced French braiding, starting from night braids is a good idea- even less than perfect ones will do the job.

For my night braids (as well as for everything else), I don't use scrunchies but metal-free flat elastics. They hold really well even fine, slippery hair. I haven't noticed any damage for over a year of using them.
