Tangles or Knots
Dec 19th, 2005 at 3:13pm

Hello.  My hair is now almost to BSL.  Yeah!  However, I have been getting these awful knots underneath.  I guess it's from rubbing on my clothes.  Is this a problem for everyone, or is it the materials I am wearing?  I guess I just have to keep it up all the time.  I do tie it back, but I guess that's not good enough.

I can't get the tangles out without breaking some hairs, so I have to do something different.  How do you all keep your hair from tangling?

UPLisa- I have been having a lot of trouble with tangles and knots lately, too.   I'm about ready to go back to 'cones even though they pull the wave out of my hair.
My hair hardley tangled at all until about an inch ago.
I just had 1/2" trimmed off my ends(I'm slowly trying to get rid of dyed hair as I grow) and now my hair doesn't tangle as bad.
The only thing that has worked for me is Infusium 23- which I quit using cause of the cones.
What I do is only use it when I really have a problem- and try not to use it every day.
I don't like the way every day silicone use( not to mention) shampooing pulls the wave out of my hair.
I never knew my hair was this wavy till I quit using sulfate shampoo and 'cones.
So I don't know what to tell you- maybe sometone else will have an idea?
I do oil (jojoba) and do DT's.

My hair tangles horribly if I wear it down while I am wearing velvet.  It also tangles more if I wear it down with any sort of man-made fiber that produces a lot of static.  Now I know that if I want to wear that velvet top, I am either going to wear my hair up or get tangles all day.

Well, I don't have fine hair but I imagine a dab of oil on the underside of the hair might help.  Also, do you comb with a wide tooth throughout the day?  Maybe that would cut down on the knot.

Good Luck!!

Fine hair is the most prone to tangles. Sux, doesn't it?

I agree with what Sakina said about the dab of oil underneath. That may help.

What helps me is to stear clear of cheap products. I grew up using Suave and that killed my hair! So these days, I stick to slightly pricier lines. You get what you pay for, after all...

I tend to wear my hair up during the day so it doesn't get in the way and become hopelessly tangled. I also use a leave-in spray conditioner every day after my shower, before detangling with a wide-tooth seamless comb. I also spray a combination of oil & water on the very last inch of my hair & run a seamless comb through it to work it in. This helps to cut down on tangles at the ends - where they start.

You also might try wearing shirts that won't catch or snag your hair. Silk & satin are great. Velvet works well for me, but to each his own.  Wink

Ouch, these must hurt Undecided.

Maybe conditioning the hair in that area might help, sorry i really don't know, BUT if you go to the Help! section there is a thread titled as Those Tiny Little Knots, that talk about the same thing and some solutions that might help.

Thanks everyone.  I was thinking I might have to go back to cones.  I'd rather not, though.

Today I have it up.  I have been braiding it at night, plus using a satin pillowcase, so that's not a problem.

I'll have to be really careful of the clothes or collars I wear; I can see that.

My hair is fine, and I really prefer to keep it up. Simply tying hair back doesn't help me- if I want to avoid tangles, I must wear it braided. If I wear my hair down (which I seldom do), I must comb it many times a day. I'm so lazy that I usually wear my hair down only a few hours at a time.
In my experience, conditioning hair well makes it just more slippery...which doesn't affect to tangling at all. Maybe the hair doesn't get tangled quite so easily, but the tangles become tight knots fast.  Undecided
So, my best idea is trying to find nice braid and updo styles.

Yes, BSL seemed to be the point for me when I started having a lot of trouble.  My hair is chemically treated -all but 2" of roots, though, so that just adds to the fragility.
I second wearing your hair up, too. I have had to do that now, or I get too many tangles.
I just thought of a product that DOESN"t have cones but really works on tangles for me is Beauy without cruelty leave in.
I only use it in the winter, because it kinda weighs down my hair(only use it from the ears down). But I smooth it in when my hairs wet and twist into an updo.

I have the same problem… BSL, very fine, and oh so many tangles, and problems with breakage.

I usually oil after washing, finger comb, and put my hair in a bun.

One day last week I wore my hair down and by the end of the day I had almost a dreadlock underneath- took hours to get out and I lost so much hair!  Cry

So I agree with everyone else: definitely an updo!
