Styling and Combing
Jan 8th, 2006 at 12:20am

Hey girls :-D

As most of you probably know, I have an ADORABLE 4 year old niece.  She's got hair down to her waist, and it's rather thick.  It's gorgeous hair...but she won't let me braid it or comb it.  How can I get her to come around without tying her to the chair? ;p  I think her mom rips a comb through her hair, so that may be part of the problem. :/

Any suggestions would be helpful.

How about doing an aunt-niece hair-do activity?  i.e. have her comb her own hair (with wide-tooth comb)while you show her how on yours (maybe both do jojoba oil application first)and then help her do a simple up-do (do the same with yours).  I find people (adults included) are much more likely to attempt something potentially painful if they are "in charge" until they build up some trust that the other person isn't going to inflict (unnecessary) pain.

I think Precious Locks' suggestions are good ones. If your niece's mother isn't very gentle with a comb, I doubt the little girl would let anyone touch her hair because she probably assumes she'll be in for a hair torture session.

Good luck!

Yeah, I know what you mean!  My sister went to try to touch her hair to get a giant tangle out of her hair -- and before she put the comb into it she started yelling "OW OW OW!!"

This is going to be quite a problem! >:(  She lets me play with it every once in a great while.  I think I need to ask her more often.

Thanks for the advice.  She let me play with her hair for a short time.  Here's a photo of it.  =)

Aww thanks!

Sometimes people think that *I* am my niece's mother because we have the same haircolor.  I'm not ready for kids, yet! Wink
