Will my hair really need fewer trims a year if I get the bottom cut in a U-shape (sort of already is) and why is that?

Nope. If anything, it will probably need more trims to maintain the shape.

My hair seems to grow into a somewhat natural u-shape if left on its own.

Okay, thanks.  I'll try to watch which way it naturally seems to grow.  The current slgiht u-shape isn't very well defined so I could still change the shape at the next trim which will be sometime after summer.
