Dark Roots

Instead of trying to strip the red out of my hair like I had discussed in my last post, I went and had my hair highlighted blonde. Every since, the red has slowly faded out, making my hair look so much lighter than it did before.
But now my roots are about an inch long, and they are a much darker blonde than the highlights. I know they will get lighter as they grow out (my hair is naturally a gold-ish color), but I am at a loss for what to do.
Should I just let the roots grow out and continue to cut the red/blonde highlight out? Or should I perhaps go to a salon and try to match the color of my hair to the natural color of my roots?
Technically, I can't do anything with my hair until I get permission from the director of the show that I am in. I am really sick of dying my hair, I just want it natural again, but I don't want a stripe in my hair while it grows out. Basically, I'm looking for any way to even the color of my hair without sacrificing the length and cutting back to a pixie.

Is it safe to dye streaks into the root area so the transition will be more gradual? You'll choose to get fewer streaks each time you go to the salon until you're back to your natural shade.

I just realized I posted this in the special effects section, not the regular color area. Oh well.
I have thought about doing that, and honestly, it's probably the route I'll take, but that then leaves me with an even longer period to wait until my hair is natural again.

When I decided to stop coloring my hair my hairdresser used my natural color over it all to blend it and I just let it grow out. No one could tell my hair was colored from that point on.
Good Luck!

Find a good colorist to match your natural hair color, and from then on focus on keeping your hair healthy.

Would that work if you are coloring your hair darker? My natural color is dishwater brownish/blonde and I have been dying it dark brown for years. I am playing around with the idea of going back to my natural color.

That's a good question. I guess they'd start blending a lighter color in at the roots to move you gradually back to your natural color. I think it might take more than one color graduation to go from dark to lighter.
