Anyone else make-up free?
Aug 29th, 2009 at 8:38am

I have a long bad skin history I'm finally owning up to and doing something about rather than trying to conceal it in shame and accepting the condition out of ignorance.  Instead I'm trying to learn all I can about allergies, intolerances, eczema, nettles/hives (body not face), and all sorts of skin conditions and what causes them and how to keep them down.  So for two weeks now I've been make-up and fragrance free and now I've decided it's going to be a permanent decision.  I'd rather spend money on essential skin care my impossible face and body skin needs.  My face can't decide which skin type it is but it's always bad looking and usually greasy but eczema can be hidden under the greasy surface if that makes sense.

Have anyone else made a decision to go cosmetics and fragrance free?

P.S.  I'm not opposed to others wearing make-up.  It should be an individual decision and no one should feel pressured into conforming one way or the other.  I'm asking out of curiosity and to hear other people's experiences with their decision to go make-up free and how they feel; confidence, attractiveness.

Most definitely not me. I have suffered with a serious skin condition my entire life and have used every treatment out there. One of which was quite successful in bringing it down to at least a semi-manageable level.
These days, I tend to manage it with a light prescription, quality products and a good regimen. That usually keeps it at a level that I can live with.

Wearing or not wearing makeup depends mostly on timing, convenience and occasion. I usually don't wear makeup to work but always wear it onstage. I love makeup. Seriously. The different products and finishes that they make nowadays are amazing! The things that I could do with all of them seem limitless and I like that. I've been an artist all my life, so to me, makeup is just one more creative outlet that begs to be played with.
However, there are some days where my skin just will not have it. Or I don't have the time. Or I don't feel like it. So I can understand where you're coming from.

Also, every makeup item that I use is first scrutinized for ingredients. With the exception of lip products, if it's not oil-free, I will not put it on my face. End of story.

Anyway, it sounds like you seriously need to visit your dermatologist. I don't know the first thing about eczema, but I imagine that there is no shortage of ways to treat it. Also, try using products that are free of oils & fragrances and labeled specifically for sensitive skin because yours certainly seems to be. They also make laundry products that are free of dyes and perfumes. HTH

I do try to wear any make-up that is vegan or as all natural as I can get.  My laundry detergent, too!
I've been wearing mineral make-up for around 5 years, lately, about 2 or 3 months I only wear make-up when I go outside.  Fist because it has a sun screen in it and second I've always worn light make-up so to wear it or not wear it is how I feel that day!

I'm rarely ever make up free.  I use a pressed powder, mineral makeup just about every day.  It's very light, has an spf of 15 and I still feel and look un made up, but better.  And of course, I always make sure my eyebrows are filled in....and I use a light bronzer on my cheeks most days.

When I worked, I wore a liquid foundation, mascara, blush, eyeshadow, lipstick, filled in my eyebrows, lined my upper and lower lids with brown liquid eye liner (I'd use black and false eyelashes for the evenings) every single morning.  I did a full face in 15 minutes which I thought (and still think) was quite impressive.

I don't wear a lot of makeup, and most times not at all.  Mostly this is due to laziness, but also because I don't like the feeling of makeup on my whole face.  Most days if I do any makeup my daily routine is a brown eyeshadow used as a liner and some mascara.  I might top that off with some liquid liner if I feel like punching it up a bit.  If I do wear more makeup, it's pressed mineral powder (never a liquid foundation), and maybe bronzer or blush.

I can't wear most eyeshadows due to an allergic reaction.  I can get away with hypoallergenic ones like Almay, or high quality ones like MAC.  I don't like to wear any foundation on a regular basis because it clogs my pores and causes more breakouts.

I also don't wear much lipstick because it causes my lips to chap badly.  I have found that the Physician's Formula plumping formula lip gloss is very good and it's about all I wear other than the "chapstick" type balms.

The only thing that bothers me about going make-up free is the loss of it as a creative outlet.  But I'm not really bothered about being bare faced otherwise.  I have an appt. with a dermatologist in October, and a referral to an "allergolog" who's going to take a look at the blood tests my doc. sent him and I don't know how he can help.  But thanks to all of you for giving me some inspiration for how I might be able to get around this in the future should I feel an urge to use make-up again or feel that the occassion calls for it.  I'm just feeling too paranoid and poor to try to experiment with what I can and can't use on my skin but we are changing detergent and other cleansing formulas.

I love to wear makeup and play in it.  I don't wear it everyday like I used to (when I was younger) and now go much less elaborate in general.

Have you considered permanent makeup?  I don't think I could do the eye part.  Yikes!!!  I know some people who have it and it looks very nice on them and they love it.

I hope you get the answers you're looking for from your tests.  Good Luck, Drear!!!

Drear: I hope your dermatologist can help you out with this.

I'm considering doing permanent liner on my upper lids this fall.  It does sound scary though. Undecided  When I got my brows done, the woman told me that she doesn't actually do a line, but dots.  That way, there is a difference but it isn't totally noticable as to what it is.  Actually, she referred to it as "eyelash enhancement".  She showed me some pics of her clients that had this done and it looked nice.  Of course, I know I don't need it.  No one needs stuff like that, but still, I might try it out.

I wouldn't consider permanent make-up as I feel no need for it.  I suppose part of the reason why I wore so much make-up in the past was because I had that feeling of: "because I can!" aside from that vicious cycle of trying to camouflage flaws and probably making them worse and starting an evil cycle.

I don't know how I missed this topic.  *shrug*  The only makeup I wear on a daily basis is black mascara (and Burt's Bees lip balm).  I almost feel guilty next to some of you here but I have very good skin.  Being a stay-at-home farmer's wife, my mother never wore makeup and I suspect that had a profound effect on me.  Plus I hate the feel of powder/foundation on my face.  --I feel like I can't breath.  Once in a great while I get a yen to wear lipstick, but that urge doesn't last more than a day or two.  I am not against those who wear makeup; in fact there are times when I wish I had more of an urge to wear it myself.  It just doesn't seem to go along with who I am.   Smiley  Same thing with fragrance--I own it but rarely wear it.  Our laundry detergent and dryer sheets are also fragrance free.

I applaud your decision, Drear, to go makeup and fragrance free!

M'lady Drear,
I am also cosmetics and fragrance free. Fortunately, my workplace sits me firmly behind a desk, and all of my coworkers are male, so they cannot insist that I wear makeup (unless they want me insisting they wear makeup, too!)
I also suffer from hives. No eczema, fortunately, but I get angioedema occasionally in my hands and face.
I find that every time I wear makeup, it slides off and I break out afterwards.
I also never wear scents, as they give me migraines, and I have to use gentle and fragrance free detergent to wash my clothes.
