Subjective hair length

Hello all!

Quick question for all you true Rapunzels.
I've been reading through the forums, and I learned all about measuring hair length, and the hair length chart, etc. I had DH measure me from hairline to the longest tips of my hair, and it looks like by that measurement, I'm technically hip length?

However, I feel like a cheater when I post this number/length, since I have heavily layered hair. My shortest layers are really only right around possibly APL or BSL, so the bulk of my hair tends to be between these two points, like a bell curve. This gives my hair the illusion of actually being shorter.   Sad

So, I guess my question is, how does one compensate for this subjective difference? Would you guys go with an average? Or just stick with the longest length?

Pick one and then stick with that.  Consistency is what counts and what will give you a clearer visualization of your growth or stabilization.   When you measure on a monthly or 3 month basis, wet or dry, just measure the same way each time.

I have always measured to the bottom of the longest layer.  If it's any comfort, others may be looking at the bottom of your longest layer and see that as how long your hair appears.

Fx. I just had a desperately needed "trim" actually a cut.  Layers were necessary if I didn't want more taken off the length which I didn't.  People look at my hair and tell me that it's still long.  1. I never thought near APL was long but to your average Joe/Jane anthing past shoulders is long.  Now the longest layer is just past shoulders and that's why others apparently still view my hair as long.  So even with your heavy layering your hair probably appears VERY long to most people. Thank you both for your responses.  Smiley

I think for simplicity's sake, I will stick with longest, since that's easier than trying to keep track of the illusive "middle of my layers" point.

Drear:
That works for most of my friends, but I actually work at a company where most of the guys either have their hair long, had their hair long, or is married to someone with long hair.
Even if they do not fall into these categories, they most likely had one or two close friends in college who had long hair.
Long hair seems to be a rite-of-passage thing for a lot of computer people.

In fact, I have a coworker who's probably over 6 feet tall, I think, and he has ... well, is it still bra strap length when you're talking about guys?  Grin
At any rate, it's a few inches below that. His hair, even if it's not "waist length" still looks much longer than mine, simply due to how much taller he is.

Although I am not a true rapunzel, there is a general consensus of how to measure. Most measure from their hairline to the longest portion of the hair even with layers. I would only measure shorter pieces if a cut were going to bring the longer hair to that point, otherwise measure the longest piece of hair, and be consistent so you do not end up with different measurements.

Thanks! I've decided that the only way to get (somewhat) consistent results is to grab all of my hair and the measuring tape near my waist between my thumb and index finger behind my back. Holding tightly, I draw my fingers down along my hair and the tape until I feel my hair pop out (or just about to pop out) of my grip. I then pull the tape around to see which marking my finger and thumb landed on.

Kinda crude, but it seems to be consistent at the very least. I'd train DH to do this, but he never bothers to report fractions of inches.  Embarrassed
