Dandruff shampoos?
Dec 19th, 2002 at 11:01pm

I never thought I'd have to ask this question, but recently, after a bout of illness I began to notice that my scalp was getting really flaky. Ew!  I got some Tea Tree oil shampoo and that helped a bit, but still am having some troubles.  Plus, I'm not sure that it is doing the lenght of my hair any good at all.  Actually, it seems to be drying it out some!  Cry

I think that it is a dry-scalp thing, but am not positive.  I don't think of my scalp as being anything other than "normal" usually.  I do have to shampoo every other day or else the hair close to the scalp looks greasy . . . so maybe it's not a dry scalp problem??

I have read that dandruff can be triggered by being sick or by stress.  Ugh.  I just hope this is a temporary situation!!

I asked the person who trims my hair and she suggested Kenra's Dandruff shampoo -- although she didn't notice my flakes at all -- I brought it up after she had finished the trim.  I'm really the only long hair client she has, though.

Any other ideas on dandruff shampoos that are safe for the long locks? ???

If you're looking for something natural, here's a dandruff shampoo recipe from the LongLocks Hair Care Recipes Cookbook, which is located at http://www.longlocks.com/hair-care-recipes-cookbook.htm

Ginger Dandruff Treatment
Ingredients
Ginger root
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Directions
Squeeze ginger root through press to obtain one tablespoon of juice. Mix all ingredients. Apply to scalp and let dry before shampooing. Repeat three times a week.

I'm sure you could probably find other remedies on the Web as well.

Hey Briony, if your stylist is long hair friendly, why don't you ask her for permission to post her information on our Long Hair Salons board?  The one I posted for Delaware is specific to one stylist, it doesn't have to be the whole salon as long as you give specifics.  I'm sure she'd appreciate the business and anyone in your area looking for someone they can trust would appreciate it as well!  :)

I don't use shampoo, so I can't offer you any suggestions on that -- but have you tried just scrubbing the heck out of your scalp with your finger tips? This works wonderfully for me to get rid of any and all flakes.

Use a little oil or conditioner, or maybe a little shampoo, to lubricate, and do an intense massage all over your head. Something with peppermint in it gives you a wonderful tingly feeling as you go on. (I use Nioxin Scalp Therapy, a conditioner, for this.)

Kao, do you wash your hair with conditioner or is there some other magic potion you use?  :)

Conditioner! I use the Scalp Therapy stuff to 'clean' my hair, and then an aloe vera one to condition it -- I'm specifically following Lorraine Massey's 'Curly Girl' method. I have very dry hair, so shampoo and my head don't get along too well. ;)

I use Nioxin scalp therapy on the scalp, working it in well. the curly girl friendly (according to ingredients) conditioner I use is by L'Anza. I use Sebastian Potion No. 9 and a touch of curly girl approved gel (sheer blonde-- I am not blonde--funky chunky, which is virtually all a curly girl approved ingredient).

I find my hair is much less prone to tangling and is shinier and less dry. I was a big user of silicone products and I agree with the curly girl theory that over time this is (a) drying and (b) bad for your hair when you have to remove the buildup. my hair really is much softer and less easily tangled.

I airdry as usual, tried the scrunch dry/scrunch gel thing and all it did is tangle me up.  I truly do not think I need shampoo.

the interesting thing about the curly girl method which is supposed to be good for everyone except the tuly fine haired is that you do not rinse out all of the conditioner, it acts as a leave-in. a friend has my book, but the approved products do not contain alcohols or ingredients ending in -cone and have proteins and other natural ingredients.

Kao, what products are you using?

There's a brief thread on the CG routine over in the curly hair section, but -- I'm using Nioxin Scalp Therapy to 'clean' (along w/ much friction, of course.), and lots of Jason Natural's 84% aloe vera conditioner as my conditioner. I have a little bit of their jojoba oil one left, that I sometimes use on my ends as a leave in.

I haven't tried many gels, but the one I use is Suave's aloe vera gel -- it's not sticky! It's not crunchy! And it doesn't reek of perfume! It's super gel!

Okay, maybe -not-, but it works fairly well. Wink

Old new england therapy....warm some olive oil and massage it into your scalp, wrap your head in a plastic bag and then with a towel let it rest like that for 15 minutes or so and then wash with your regular shampoo!  I live and work in very dry environments so during the winter I do this once a month or so...I even subject my husband to the same treatment and he has very short hair Smiley

I found this recipe somewhere, I wish I'd copied the link.

Dandruff Treatment

10 aspirin tablets
3/4 cup warm water
Dissolve the aspirin in water. After shampooing, massage into scalp, leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse.

I haven't needed to try it, but asprin was mentioned on a few different sites.
