My fave was always a Mason Pearson. Expensive, but worth it. It's been a while since I bought one, but I used to get them at the higher-end department stores.

The feature of Mason Pearson was the natural boar bristles, which are excellent for maintaining long hair. If you can't find (or can't spring for) an MP, I'd suggest any flat brush with natural bristles, or a natural bristle/nylon mix.

I usually had to buy a separate brush for serious detangling. MP makes one with just nylon bristles, but personally, I didn't find much difference between an MP detangler and a drugstore one. Just be nice and gentle with the detangle brush, and follow up with an MP brushing to distribute the natural oils. Just my little old opinion. Wink

I don't really find much difference between the brands of the three boar bristle brushes I have, but I wouldn't dream of using anything but natural boar bristle on my hair. I do prefer the half round shape, but a flat one will do, too. You have to be careful to make sure that whatever brush you buy that claims to be made of boar bristle doesn't also have nylon bristles interspersed throughout the bed of the brush.

Now when it comes to combs, I wounldn't dream of using anything but my Mebco detangling comb!

Okay, I've got a MP brush -- a mixed one (both boar bristles and nylon). It seems to me that only the nylon is getthing through at all. Undecided

Would a boar bristle only brush work better perhaps? Or since only the nylon is making it, should I stick to what I've got?

I'm thinking about getting myself a smaller MP that has just boar to test it . . . but if more experienced heads than mine have a definite opinion, I'll listen!

I'm finally figuring out to use a detangler brush (Demark -- love it 'cause even I can take it apart to clean AND put it together again) and then use the MP. Geez.

Scribe -- er, Rapunzel -- I'm gonna try me those combs you were mentioning. Did a quick online search and found some. Grin

I'd given up on decent combs and just gritted my teeth and used some Goody ones -- ok, but not really great. Angry

But the best ones that I can find around here -- believe it or not!

I use a comb for curly days since it detangles and doesn't brush away my curls. On normal days I have two brushes from the Body Shop, the big size and the small size. They are wooden and have a soft cushion on the bottom, though the bristles DO have tiny little knobs on the end. Why is this bad for your hair? I heard someone tell me once that it tears your hair but my hair never, and I mean *never* falls! I brush my hair several times a day and not once do I find a piece of hair on my brush! These brushes are my absolute favorite, I bought them a year ago upon recommendation and I love them

Never been to the Body Shop but I have a couple Avon plastic brushes where the bristles have those little plastic knobs or balls on the end. I've never had any trouble with them tearing my hair either. There is a bit of lint caught around the base of the bristles, but no hairs. The little balls are very smooth and when you brush your scalp it feels like a massage. One brush is very old and one of the plastic balls fell off the bristle. That one I noticed because it scratched, I just cut that one bristle off and now it's fine. All the other balls are still on the bristles.
