I'd just add, that it is also possible that your hair has reached a new length stage. In different lengths, our hair behaves naturally differently, and when you have reached a new stage, you might need some time to adjust to it. If your hair has become "difficult" recently, as it has reached its present length, this is one possible reason. If this is so, good news is that with a little time and experimentation, you will learn new requirements of your hair and will be able to enjoy it again.
   There are a few particularly "notorious" stages in growing hair- stages that many people find particularly difficult to adjust into. "Medium length" from ears to shoulder length is one such stage, and reaching BSL is another.
Most common problems are that previous favorite styles become suddenly impossible to make work. But the texture and/or the general appearance of one's hiar can also change.
   For example, when my hair reached shoulder length, it became very poofy- when down, it resembled a lion's mane. Now that my hair is BSL length, it lays more flat (a good thing), but has recently developed a little distinct waviness.
   This is why growing hair is a constant learning process: you can't just discover a way of handling your hair and be happy ever after with it- not as long as it is still growing and changing. This keeps things interesting.

You are so right about the frustrations that go along with hair changing with different lengths.

There's also the fact that products don't stay the same. Companies are always introducing new products and "revamping" their old ones, so the same hair stuff that you swear by right now might not be the same hair stuff you use 3 years from now.

As for taming your mane, FaeDreams, you might consider using oil or aloe gel.
    The ends of my hair have a tendency to dry out, so I try to keep them moisturized by spraying a mix of baby oil & water on them. It's worked pretty well so far - I haven't had a single split end in years. 

Of course, I have a totally different hair type & texture than you, so I'm not going to swear by anything. 

One other thing I have read somewhere -- less combing is better with curly hair.  The more you try to comb the frizzier it gets.  (this is 2nd or 3rd hand info as I definitely do not have curly hair!)

My hair is wavy and the canopy tends to be dry and poofy.  My hair is easier to take care of now that it's longer, and now that I've figured out that it's wavy.     The canopy needs moisture or it's a mess.

I use a spritz at night--1 oz aloe, 5 oz distilled water, 3-10 drops of jojoba oil mixed with lavender eo and rosemary eo, and a squirt of Goth Rosary conditioner.  I spritz my canopy well with the mixture, then braid it for the night.  It makes my hair much less poofy and very soft.

My hair is only just below my shoulders when curly now. I'm not sure about when it is straight b/c I haven't done that since January. ~~jax
