Combing versus Brushing
Jun 17th, 2003 at 12:32pm

Why is it better to comb your hair out rather than brush it? I only comb my hair when it's wet, so that my hair doesn't break, and I brush it often throughout the day. Is it wrong for me to be doing this? Boar bristle brushes aren't available here so I use the one from The Body Shop which is wooden and has metal bristles with round circles on the ends. My hair never falls but I'm not sure if it's damaging my hair... also, does anyone have any suggestions as to what comb would be best to use? I use a plastic wide-toothed one at the moment.

Iīm not sure if my answer will be of any help to you ???,but Iīm one of those who brush hair even when itīs wet!Very carefully of course, and Iīve never had any damage from it.I only use a comb immediately after washing my hair,to untangle, then I brush it when itīs still quite wet(with a nylon/boar bristle mix brush).

I suppose that depends on your hair type. Before coming to this site I would just leave my hair alone until it was dry, and then comb/brush it. Now, I comb my hair when it's wet and brush it when it's dry, but I'm not sure if my hair is getting damaged due to the brushing. I think I might stop brushing my hair for a little while and what effect that makes on my hair.

Anything that causes friction on your hair will cause damage to it over the long run because it cannot be regenerated.  Brushing your hair causes considerably more friction to more hair surface than combing does.

I think it also depends on HOW you brush your hair:I never brush my hair with long strokes, only short, light strokes and a bit of hair at a time.Combing on the other hand doesnīt work for me at all,the comb simply gets stuck in my hair-even a wide toothed comb is no help( on dry hair)

Wow, Anne-Marie, your hair must be really thick!!

Hmm well I can get a comb through my hair quite easily, but I always feel like my hair is better untangled when I use a brush. This only makes a difference when I leave my hair down, though, which won't make a difference now because of the hot weather!

Hm,Iīm not sure about thick!  Wink Each individual hair of mine is very fine, but Iīve got a lot of it-maybe thatīs why I canīt just run a comb through my hair Tongue
