Rinsing Hair

Hello all,

At Christmas, I went from washing my hair (shampoo + conditioner) every day to washing every 2 or 3 days (conditioner only). The improvement is noticeable! Cheesy

My hair is still fairly short, so I can't braid it when I go to bed. When I wake up, my hair is one big frizz, so I always rinse it when I shower. Is rinsing every day bad for your hair? I don't blow-dry it, but I still wonder if all this wet-dry every day (sometimes twice a day if I bathe in the evening) is damaging my hair.

When I am on my biking trips and shampooing is a MAJOR event, I usually just rinse my hair to get the road dust, etc out. I feel better and I figure it provides some much needed moisture to my hair. Unless your water has a lot of chemical (chlorine) or is hard, a rinse should not do any harm. As you hair gets longer, you could add a bit of conditioner to the hair from the ears down. This will make detangling easier and surprisingly, conditioners usually contain some of the same cleaning ingredients as shampoo - just in lesser quantity, so the conditioner will clean the hair as well.

Sounds like you are getting the routine down and seeing results - Congratulations! I wish I had known the best methods for caring for my hair when it was shorter. I didn't learn until it was mid back! So now I have damaged ends to contend with.

You might also try a satin pillowcase to minimize the bedhead look and damage that can occur just from the friction with the fabric while you sleep.

I don't think it's bad for the hair at all - some hair loves the extra water! Even better if your water is soft... plus you could put a dab of conditioner on your length too.

If you can put your hair in a high bun and sleep comfortably, that might also save it from the frizz. I know some people who put ponytail holders down the length, or make one ponytail pulled to the front.

My hair is still too short to braid at night (it's very uneven) so I'll just keep to my daily routine for a few more months. Nowadays I can sit out in the sun and dry my hair so it's definitely not a problem! /Kate
