How much do you spend on your hair each year?
Apr 7th, 2004 at 6:44pm

Just curious based on a comment from Rapunzel - how much do you guys spend on your hair each year. I guess we could break it down into some categories:

Salon services (inc. trims, treatments, styling etc):

Products for home use:

Accessories (since I know many of you buy them):

Anything else: ?

Thanks

M

What do I spend on my hair? I'm not sure I want to know!  Shocked

Salon services: $0 - hubby does my trims so my "payments" are not in cash  Roll Eyes

Home products:  I'm not really sure, but I would guess with the current products, about $60 per year.

Accessories:  Waaaaaay too much - I consider my hair toys one of the few crazy hobbies to help me maintain sanity at times.

Anything else:? I'm glad you didn't ask how much time we spend on our hair, I'm not sure I could figure that out!!

As for time spent:

I save time by not going to salons for trims, cuts or other services.  I save time by not having to blow dry, set or style my hair.  I save time by not having to re-style my hair several times a day.  (I usually put it in a bun and I'm done for the day.  If braided, I might re-braid once a day).  I save time by only washing my hair twice a week instead of every day. Most of hairstyles for everyday wear, take less time to do than a typical short style (I'm a master at a quick bun with a hairstick).

I spend more time detangling. I spend more time washing/conditioning my hair when I do it.  I spend more time combing/braiding my hair before bed.  I spend more time reading product labels to make sure I'm getting the best ingredients for my hair. A few fancy hair styles might take more time.

Anyone else?  Do you think long hair takes more or less time to care for than a short spikey style?

Annual cost of maintaining my hair:

One trim - $8.00
12 bottles of VO5 shampoo or conditioner @ 88˘ - $10.56

Optional (for other people)
Hair color - 12 boxes @ $5.50 - $66.00

Hair toys - priceless  Wink

Putting up the hair takes about 2 minutes in the morning, and usually it's good until 10 PM. Drying is an issue, as I can't put my hair up or go to bed with it wet, so often it gets a 5 minute blow-fry. I've been washing it every three days, so this isn't much time. Color is a half-hour every other week. Braiding at night, 2 minutes, which I do about half the time.

So this comes to less than 10 minutes a day, including the trim, which I have amortised across the year.

Salon services (inc. trims, treatments, styling etc): 0, hubby does trims of length, I trim bangs.

Products for home use: Probably $100 - $200 or so, but I buy much more shampoo and conditioner than I use because I'm always trying new things (often with the intention of posting about them, which I then never seem to find time to do).  Hubby uses my castoffs or they get put in the linen closet.  You should *see* that linen closet :x

Accessories: Many thousands of dollars, but only because I buy all the components for every LongLocks HairSticks design on earth, LOL!  I don't buy too many other accessories, except for fuzzy ponytail holders because both of us lose those like there's no tomorrow.  I always wear my own sticks during the day, or I have one pair of sterling and one pair of antique sterling and 14kt. gold hair pins I wear if I wear my hair up when I go to sleep.  Now if you want to talk about *collectible* vintage hair combs, which I rarely actually wear (usually only around Christmas or for special functions), I again spend hundreds, maybe thousands.  It's hard to differentiate what I buy for me and keep from what that I eventually determine should go into the boutique without doing the actual math.

Anything else: Satin pillowcases, probably buy a couple every year, $10 or so.  Turbie twists, buy a pack for $20 every couple years.  Fun stuff like purple Manic Panic when I'm feeling daring, maybe $30 a year.

i trim my own hair/dont blow dry or anything else so i save time and money in that aspect. i wash every 2/3days so that takes up a bit of time...but i dont mind that! erm....overall i spend about £50 or so a year. something like that.

detangling takes about 5mins a time so not too bad...washing,etc about half an hour.....styling (well...brushing, braiding or bunning) about 5-10mins. pretty good actually! how efficient of me  Roll Eyes Grin

i love doing all the hair care things so i dont mind any time i spend on it...apart from detangling...sometimes that hurts!  Cry

Hm,I'm my own hairdresser too,so there's 0$ on that.

Providing I use the right conditioner detangling takes about 3 minutes, letting my hair dry naturally is the only thing that takes longer, about an hour or so.
Putting my hair up in a braided bun etc.is also rather quick.

As long as I don't play around with new shampoos/cond. Wink ,I only need a bottle of my favourite Paula's Choice shampoo every 2 months or so and a big jar of Biolage conditioner each month.
My hair vitamins (Ulta Hair plus) are rather costly, they are available here in Germany, but cost around 35 $ per bottle.(Can't order them from the US because of customs regulations). But they are worth it Wink
Hair toys-I spend most on them, because I need something new to decorate my updos from time to time,I guess it's around 250$ per year.
