Using a temporary color
Jun 19th, 2004 at 2:57am

Hi,

I'm new to the forum, so forgive me if this has been asked a gazillion times already, but do you do anything special when coloring your hair with a temporary color?

I have medium brown hair, but the ends have turned reddish, even though I try to keep them out of the sun. The top and front of my hair, though is medium brown with grey. So when I put my hair up in a bun at the top of my head, it looks really silly -- red hair sitting on top of salt and pepper! I want to color it using a similar color so that it looks a little more consistent.

I haven't colored my hair in a few years, but when it was just shoulder-length, I'd put the color on the scalp area first, let it sit for the recommended time (I think it was 10 minutes), then add it to the ends. A few friends said that I should probably try the reverse: put the color on the ends for 10 minutes, then do the scalp area.

Does anyone do that? How do you do it? Do you put it in a pony tail? Where does it sit for those 10 minutes? Do you wear a plastic cape or wrap it in plastic (or put a plastic bag over the tail)?

Thanks for your help! So glad I found this site!

You don't mention how long your hair is, but having ends that are different from the top of your head is not unusual.  I think the lighter your hair is naturally, the more you are prone to lighter ends.

The method you might use for coloring would depend on what results you are hoping for.  If you are trying to get the ends closer to the color at the scalp, I would start by putting the color on the ends so that it has more time to saturate the hair.

Temporary color will fade with time and has a tendency to dry out the hair (although not as severely as permanent color).  You would want to be sure to condition the hair after the coloring process.  Some hair color products even come with a conditioner to apply.

Another option would be to accept the color of your hair as it is.  Take care of it and protect it from the sun to prevent and further sun lightening.  Put a pretty hairstick or two in your bun and no one will care about the difference in the colors.

Thanks for the quick reply!

My hair is thin and very fine and almost touches the small of my back. Because of this, I usually wear it up, though I will often wear it down when I've just washed it (or when I'm chilled by air conditioning somewhere and forgot to bring a sweater, LOL!).

Yes, the results I'm trying to achieve are to get the hair more one color. I like a little variation, which is why I use temporary rinses (they let some of the grey show through, but not all, giving a more natural look).  The other result I want is to cover some, but not all of the grey.

Regarding conditioning, yes, I'll remember to do that. I often condition only the tail. I make a tail on the top, lean over the sink, wet it, squeeze out the excess water, and then add a good conditioner (I'm now using one of those thick cholesterol creams), and hang over the sink like that for a couple of minutes. Then I rinse with warm, then cool, water.

Thanks again for the reply!

HI.
I used to use temporary color a few times a year. I don't do it any more because I want to grow it now, but I think the reason they suggest putting it on the new growth first is that the hair on the ends is usually more porous, and will absorb more color. SO if you put it on all of the hair the same amount of time it will be darker on the ends.
Anyway, I neve used the conditioner that was in the package. I usually followed it with Joico Kpak.
Hope that helps.
