wondering...

I bought some new henna supplies while I was in Germany (I found 'em for pretty cheap), but now I'm stuck trying to decide when to actually use it on my hair. I could do it now, but I'm leaving on July 15 to volunteer at a camp in Colorado for a month. While I won't be getting real down and dirty, I'll be scrubbing floors and cleaning toilets and such, so I'll probably be washing more often and won't have time for giving extra care to freshly henna'd hair. I'll also be around strong cleaning chemicals and possibly swimming in the camp's chlorinated pool. Plus I'd like it to look a bit more fresh before I leave for college. I could do it after returning from camp; the problem there is that I only have four days between when I return and when I have to leave for school, so I'll probably be too frantic with that whole transition to put extra time and effort into the actual henna-ing process. Plus if I waited till then I wouldn't have much time for a strand test, and I don't know how red the stuff I bought will turn out...I want it to look fresh when I go to school, but not that fresh. And since dorm bathrooms aren't exactly the ideal place to henna one's hair, I don't have any other options.

I think I'm leaning more towards doing it now, but I could use a second opinion. What do you all think?

In other news, I'm going to try sock curling tonight, per Anais's instructions on her wonderful website.  Smiley I just showered (C-COW-C; again, thanks to Anais! My hair feels wonderful!) and am waiting for it hair to dry a bit more before putting it up, but I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Well I'll be using my own towel, so that's not a problem - but good point...

The sock curling turned out pretty nicely, though I could definitely use some more practice. And next time I might try three or four sock curls, instead of just two.

Hi Cairn Wink

Welcome home and it's always nice to see you around. I'm glad C-COW-C is doing you well. I think you should henna after you get back. Do the strand test before you leave. That way you can have the red to look forward to when you come home. Grin

Your camp volunteer work sounds really fun Smiley I used to do unit leader stuff for local GS weeklong camps, and I miss that. Chores are a great excuse to meditate. Have a wonderful time. Pray.

Hugs

That's actually a pretty good idea...the only thing that worries me about henna-ing when I get back is that after I do it, I won't be washing my hair again until I get to college. And if this henna is anything like my last attempt, I'll be getting lots of color runnage for the first few washes, which I would have to deal with in dorm showers with my new towels (yet to be bought...). But then, I could always buy red towels, and dorm showers probably aren't the cleanest anyway...

OooOOoh, that's a tough decision Undecided I'm sure you'll work something out though. I'm trying to figure out when to henna too, so that people don't have to see much of my orange scalp.

Good luck

Fun new 'do

I saw the movie Dark Water last night; not very good, and not very scary (not to mention the screaming 13-year-olds who made up most of the audience), but Camryn Manheim's hair was very nice, and I really liked Jennifer Connelly's funky braid 'do from the first half of the movie. I tried to do it on myself, but my hair's way too long; I did, however, come up with a pretty funky style:
-Start with two braids started at the top of the ears.
-Single knot the two braids at the back of the head, so they cross just above the nape of the neck.
-"Tie" the braids together two or three more times, depending on the length, building the knots on top of each other.
-Tuck in the ends and secure with bobby pins and/or hairsticks.

I really like the result; kind of "Italian peasant" (well, that's the first thing that came to mind). It's also very light - so much so that I was almost afraid at first that it'd come undone, but it stays very well. I really don't notice the weight of my hair at all. I think it needs a bit more practice to get it looking a bit neater, but all in all a successful 'do; very nice for lazing around or doing housework.  Smiley

The best laid plans...

So I ended up deciding to henna my hair today. I wanted to do it this morning, but ended up having to stay at church for much longer than expected, so it got pushed back to the afternoon.

Anyway, I was about five minutes into applying the stuff to my head when my stepsister knocks on the bathroom door to tell me that my friend from across the street is having a barbecue with all our friends and came over to invite me. Perfect timing, right?
I just finished glopping the rest of the henna on as fast as I could, but I still have to let it sit for at least three hours (I did a strand test for four, & even then the result wasn't as bright as I'd hoped for). Plus we're having our own barbecue here at my house this evening for my church youth group, and though I could ditch that for a few minutes to run across the street, chances are that party will be done by that time.

I wouldn't be so upset, except ALL my friends are over there, and this would probably have been one of the last times I'd get to see them all before leaving for college, with all the time I'm out of town this summer. Grrr.  Undecided

(On the bright side, the henna application was much tidier than last time. Hopefully the color will turn out okay too.)
