Cairn's Combings
Jun 24th, 2004 at 11:06pm

So then, me and my hair...

My normal routine:
Shampoo & condition every three days. I used to use a vinegar rinse every time I washed, but my hair started to turn to straw after awhile, and stays softer without it. I now only use it when needed to remove build-up.
I darken my hair with a coffee deep conditioner mixture about every two weeks, or however often I need to to keep it dark.
I never use any heat appliances, hair gels, hairspray, etc. I'll usually braid it at night, and fix it with just my fingers and a comb. Brushes are cruel and unusual torture to my hair.

My favorite hair accessories are hairsticks and cloth headbands - either the wide elastic ones, or colorful scarves and strips of fabric. I like color. Smiley

My current hair product is Redken So Long s&c. They work pretty well for me, though I personally think it's a lot of money to pay for results you could get from cheaper products.

My hair is 331/4 inches as of 6/21. It was 323/4 on 6/04, meaning it grew a whole half inch in less than 20 days!  Shocked I didn't realize my hair grew so quickly. Maybe it's all the extra tender loving care I've been giving it recently. Smiley

I am going to coffee-condition tonight and micro-trim the split-ends (I get 'em so easily...I need to find a new conditioner) so I look nice and neat when my family leaves for England tomorrow.

I'll have updates (and if we're lucky, pictures) when I get back on the 7th. Cheers! Smiley

6.04.04 - 32 3/4 inches
6.21.04 - 33 1/4 inches
7.08.04 - 33 1/2 inches

= .75 inches of growth in just over one month
= .15 inches/week for five weeks

Not bad. Not bad at all.

Despite the fact that I had a splendid time in England (and got some cute hair accessories as well), it wasn't much of a holiday for my hair. As I'm sure we all know, it's terribly hard to control the temperature of hotel showers. The water was quite hot most of the time, which felt nice on those chilly London nights, but wasn't so good for my hair which is used to cold water. 6 people + 1 bathroom also = very short showers.

I think I am going to forsake shampoo for a CO routine. I am going to the store tonight to find a new cone-free conditioner. I wonder what I'll come home with...

More Anti-Hair Discrimination

I feel like such a martyr sometimes.

At dinner we were discussing when I need to get my senior pictures taken, and the following conversation ensued between me, my sister and parents:

Stepmom: So, do you want to get your hair styled at all before having your pictures taken?
Me: No.
s/m: But it's so scraggly at the ends. It would look nicer and thicker if you cut it.
Me: . . . . . .
s/m: It would look healthier shorter.
Me: *trying not to laugh*
s/m: It would get rid of your split ends.
Me: I can trim the split ends off myself. I just did it a couple weeks ago.
Sister: Are you sure you got them all?
Me: Yes, I'm sure you got them all.
Sister: Do you even know what split ends are?
Me: *trying to refrain from throwing my plate at her* Yes, I know what split ends are. I'm not stupid.
s/m: Why don't you just go to Great Clips or somewhere and have it trimmed?
Me: Because I don't want to go in for a one-inch cut and end up having 6 inches cut.
s/m: They'd only cut off what you need.
Me: *again trying not to laugh*
sister: You need 6 inches cut off.
Me: No I don't. And I can cut it myself.
s/m: *she doesn't believe me at all* How?
Me: It's easy I've done it before.
s/m: *gives her best "that's stupid, I don't believe you at all" look*
Me: I'll do it myself. It's not that hard.
Dad: Why don't you just have it cut or styled?
Me: Because I like it long.
s/m: Well that's okay, but it would look better shorter.
Sister: *makes disgusted faces at me like I'd just said something horrible*

Lord, someone save me from this family. I'm so sick of these conversations.

Thanks noelkara (and thanks for taking the time to read this, too!). I'm sure my parents were well-meaning, but my sister is just plain rude when it comes to my hair (or my style, or my interests, or my tastes...). Hopefully they'll figure out eventually that I know how to take care of my own hair.  Roll Eyes

In other news...

I bought some White Rain conditioner today and COed with it. It didn't turn out quite like I expected; no tangles and nicely manageable, but not as silky as my Redken conditioner. It also feels a bit heavy and leaves residue on my hands when I run them thru the length. I also think I might've used too much on my scalp. It already feels like it could use a good clarifying. Maybe my hair likes -cones after all. Or maybe it's just adjusting to a conditioner without cones. I'll experiment with it some more to see how it keeps working. And I'll be keeping the vinegar close at hand.

I gave myself a trim after showering (I'll admit my parents were right in that I did need to fix up the ends; hopefully this will appease them for awhile). It looks a bit neater, but unfortunately I lost all the length I'd put on in the past month, and then some. I'm now at 32 1/4 inches.  Undecided Oh well, at least now I know my hair grows quickly enough to gain it back soon.

I am off tomorrow to go on vacation - again. We're visiting my grandparents in Pennsylvania for a week. I'm so exhausted...though recovering from jet-lag is easier when going west than going east (I'm usually up very late), I'm still struggling. I feel like it's 6 a.m. and I haven't slept at all. I'm off to go repack and go to bed. See you all in a week.

P.S. You can tell I'm really tired; it's taken me so long to write this post that my hair is now nearly dry and feels considerably better. Very smooth. Still wish I'd used less on my scalp. Will see how it feels in the morning.

Well, I wasn't really planning on COing while in PA, but I ended up having to when I accidentally packed two separate bottles of conditioner instead of a shampoo and conditioner. I COed twice while there, then finally gave in and borrowed my sister's shampoo, I was so desparate to clarify.

I think that if I wan to CO, I'll have to partner it with a vinegar rinse - something I didn't have while in Pennsylvania - because it just gets too greasy too fast otherwise.

My grandmother actually complimented my hair the other day.  Shocked I had it in some bun-related updo secured with a simple black hairstick I found at the bottom of the bathroom door. She said it looked very elegant, and the way it was swept back really complimented my face shape and features. She was super-impressed, which is quite a compliment coming from such a fashion-critical old lady, especially considering the few seconds and minimal effort I put into it. Don't get me wrong, I love my grandmother, but we don't exactly share the same ideals when it comes to fashion, to say the least. It's good to know I'm doing something right with my appearance for at least one family member.  Roll Eyes

LOL, thanks drummergirl.  Smiley Tongue

I was out really late last night with friends and wasn't at all tired when I got home, and around 3:00 am I decided to take a shower and CO my hair. It was still a little damp when I finally went to bed. Then when I got up today around 11 am and combed my hair, I started shedding stray hairs like crazy. I felt like a molting bird. It was really annoying and kind of weird, because I usually go to sleep with my hair a little damp when I wash it in the evening, and I didn't do anything else out of the ordinary. I'm close to giving up on the whole CO thing. Maybe if I use a vinegar rinse after conditioning instead of before...

I don't think shedding has anything to do with what you do to your hair. It's an internal thing, based on the life cycle of your hair, hormones, and the season, among other things.

Hmm...I wonder what it could be. The humidity? Me staying up until 3 am every night?

My hair was so horribly greasy last night, my scalp was so itchy, and I had such bad dandruff that I just couldn't stand it anymore and had to shampoo. I looked like it had been a week since I'd last washed it, not one day. Eww...well, I hear conditioner also makes a good shaving cream substitute.  Tongue

I had my hair up in a bun yesterday, and when I took it down in the evening it felt sooo soooft. Smiley Sooo I felt inspired to experiment some with updos, and after a while got it into a nice braided bun with two of those funky little looping braids hanging down from it. I was quite proud of myself.  Grin After that I tried doing a Dutch braid, but wasn't quite so successful.  Undecided I just can't seem to get the hand positions right.

Am gonna try COing again tonight, with a vinegar rinse after. Or maybe before AND after...hmm...

The COing went much better last night. I used a vinegar rinse both before and after the conditioner, then finished with a cold rinse. I rubbed in some Infusium23 leave-in while still damp just for the heck of it, and it looks pretty good. My scalp isn't itchy and it feels much lighter. I've still got a little dandruff, but I think the vinegar is supposed to help with that.

I was practicing some more last night and FINALLY did a decent Dutch braid! It was the first time I've been able to get all the way down the length of my hair without it coming lose. I got it on my first try and am quite proud of myself.  Grin I don't really think it looks that good on me, though; I have a big forehead and I look funny with my hair pulled straight back in the front.  Undecided Somehow I'm able to avoid that problem with French braiding. Maybe if I get it tighter against my head it'll look better...

My stepsister, upon finding me still awake at 1:15 am:

"You need to cut back on this crazy writing thing. You've been at it all day. I know it's your passion...but the passion can wait until after some sleep."

Well actually, I hadn't been writing all day, and no, it can't wait until morning. Not when you're totally in your zone and the creative juices are pulsing. When your muse strikes you just gotta go with it. Time is irrelevant when you're a writer. But at least she was right about it being my passion.  Smiley

So I drove all over town today trying to find a Nalgene water bottle for my upcoming backpacking trip in Colorado. I couldn't find one anywhere! Grrr...honestly, they've gotta have them somewhere around here. So many people have them.

I tried my hardest to stay away from the haircare sections in all the stores I went into, but finally gave in at Jewel. I did manage to stay away from the shampoos and conditioners though, but ended up walking away with a can of Hollywood Beauty SuperGro Natural Herbal Formula hair treatment...stuff. It's got just about every type of oil imaginable in it. Hopefully it'll make my hair softer and shinier in time for my senior pictures on Friday. I'm a little hesitant to use it on my already oily scalp, but maybe if I pair it with my tea tree oil shampoo it'll be okay. Having an oily scalp and dry hair is such a nuisance...

My main problem right now is that I have no regular hair care routine. I've been experimenting with a bunch of different methods and just going with what my hair seems to like and need one day at a time. This isn't so bad when it's summer and I've got plenty of time to play around with it, but I'd like to get into some normal routine by the time school starts. I'm also a little worried about going backpacking next week. We'll be spending a couple nights at the base camp where there will be showers, but I've heard rumors that they're strict about water usage and only permit 2- or 3-minute showers. Then we'll be on the trail for five days and four nights with very little in the way of hygeine. It's no-trace camping, which means we can't leave anything behind - wrappers, trash, even toilet paper.  Tongue
Well, I can manage all that, but I don't wanna be stuck on the 18-hour bus ride home with nasty hair because of limited shower time once returning to the base camp. I'll probably be more focused on getting the rest of my body cleaned first.  Roll Eyes

I think I'll bring my Redken s&c to use before heading out on the trail - they seem to keep my hair clean and manageable for the longest amount of time - and my tea tree oil shampoo to really clean with when we get back.

...On a different note, I actually find it very funny that I'm even this concerned about the condition of my hair, of all things, when I'm going to be camping in the Rockies for a week - something I've dreamed of doing my entire life. Just a few months ago I couldn't have cared less. I'm not a self-image-centered person by any stretch of the imagination and never will be, no matter how good my hair looks.  Wink

And if I do start to sound too focused on my physical appearance, someone please slap me and tell me I'm turning into my sister. That oughta keep me on track right quick.  Roll Eyes

Just measured my hair: 32 7/8". That's 5/8 inches of growth since I trimmed it on July 9th.

Got another lecture from my stepmom last night about my hair and my senior pictures tomorrow. She really wants me to get it cut or styled, but of course I'm not going to. She actually thinks that my hair looks ugly. Okay, I can understand if long hair isn't her personal style - I'm not a big fan of her curly helmet hair cut myself - but I really do take it as a personal insult when she so blatantly insults something I put so much care and effort into. This is my look, this is who I am, and if she doesn't like it, too bad. They're my senior pictures anyway, not hers.

It just really makes me mad that she can't just respect my choices concerning my personal appearance. I know she loves me, but she's never once complimented me on my hair. Maybe she doesn't realize just how much effort I put into it, but should she have to?

Anyway...to get ready for my senior pictures tomorrow morning (the way I want to), I washed last night with my tea tree oil herbal shampoo. No conditioner - I was still very soft from my last coffee CO. Then this morning I used some of the Hollywood Beauty SuperGro oil stuff I bought yesterday. It worked great, and my hair's very soft and smooth. I did put a bit too much on my scalp, though (it was my first time using this kind of stuff and I wasn't sure how much to use), so I was kinda oily and sticky. I used a tissue to rub off some of the excess and brushed in some baby powder, and it looks okay now. If it's not any better by the end of the day, however, I think I'll do a vinegar rinse to get rid of the buildup.

Besides the oily scalp, I think my hair looks better today than it ever has. So soft and smooth...I dusted off all the split ends too. I'm very pleased with it, even if no one else is.

LOL Anais, you sound like one of those generic notes companies send you when you write them a complaint letter.  Wink But I know that your note is heartfelt and genuine, and I greatly appreciate it. Thanks for helping me stay long and strong!  Grin

I showered again tonight (two nights in a row - bad Cairn!) to get rid of the greasies from using too much oil stuff. I only used a vinegar rinse and Tresemme clarifying shampoo. I'm gonna use my oil stuff again in the morning to make it nice and shiny and smooth for my pictures. Oil Stuff - I think that's my official name for it now.  Roll Eyes I'm actually looking forward to getting my senior pictures taken tomorrow. Which is weird, because I generally hate having photos taken in a studio. Too much bright lighting.  Tongue

Got back last night from adventuring in Colorado. It was the most amazing week of my life - an absolute dream come true. The first day we went whitewater rafting. The next morning we went mountain climbing and rapelling, then that afternoon set out on the trail for five days. It was so beautiful and so amazing, and I've never felt closer to God.

My hair stayed pretty nice too; it didn't get noticeably greasy until the fourth day on the trail. The morning of the day we left for Colorado I oiled with an egg+olive oil concoction, then used my tea tree oil shampoo and Redken conditioner on the length. My hair was soooo soft and lovely!
We all showered when we got back to the base camp, and let me tell you I've never been so thankful for a shower in all my life. I didn't have time to do a lot - the showers cost 25 cents for 5 minutes & I'm too cheap to spend too many quarters on a shower - so after washing the rest of my filthy body I only had time to shampoo. It worked out pretty nice, though; all those natural oils had plenty of time to work their magic after a week without showering, and two days later my hair's still nice and soft. A little greasy underneath and around the nape of my neck, but that's it. I might try a vinegar rinse and CO White Rain, and see how it turns out.

I also got TONS of split ends from nights of rough sleeping under the stars without a pillow, and my hair's a little lighter from all the exposure. I'm not sure if I want to darken it, though; with my nice tan, it kinda gives a nice rugged outdoorsy look.  Wink

So I tried an OWC process (oil-wash-condition), a modification of the CWC idea, and got mixed results. Here's what I did:

For the oiling:
-2 tbs. olive oil
-1 egg
I've used this mixture before and it's worked, though I've never had it on for more than half an hour.
-I also added in some super-strong coffee to darken it a little. Of course I wasn't thinking, and it wasn't until after I mixed it all together that I realized - duh, the water I used to make the coffee won't mix with the olive oil.  Someone was paying attention in chemistry class. Roll Eyes
Once I rubbed it in my palms and got it into my hair it worked well enough, though. Then it wasn't until after I'd plastered my entire head & length that it occurred to me that perhaps egg isn't the best thing to leave sitting on your head overnight. But I'd heard of other people doing it, and there was nothing I could do about it at that point. So I stuck on a shower cap and wrapped a towel around my head to protect my pillowcase and went to bed around 11:30 pm.

Got up this morning at 8:00, meaning the oil mixture was in for about 9 hours. Much of it had dried, making my hair kind of stiff, but once I got into the shower it was alright. From there, I:

-Wet down the length and shampooed my scalp with tea tree oil/herbal shampoo, then rinsed with warm water
-Put conditioner on the length (mainly to ease the tangles and get rid of the egg smell - that latter part didn't succeed so well) and let it soak up under a shower cap while I finished my other showerly duties
-Rinsed out the conditioner and finished with a cold rinse

For the most part it worked great; my hair was very soft, smooth and manageable. The problem is that for some reason the length of my hair on only the right side of my head is still incredibly oily. It feels as though there's still olive oil in it. I don't understand how this happened, as I made sure to rinse very thoroughly and the left side feels great.

I didn't want to wash again though, so I just stuck it up in a bun and it looks good. The oiliness is starting to spread to the rest of my hair, though I can't tell yet if that's good or bad. I guess my body's trying to restore the pH balance, perhaps? I'll see if it looks any better in the morning. If not - hey, that's what hairsticks are for!   Wink

Overall I think it's a great procedure, and I plan on trying it again in the future. I'm sure with more experimenting and perhaps modified ingredients I'll get great results. I wish we actually had some honey in this house...I'll have to go out and buy a big jar for my own use one of these days. Along with some rosemary, and some essential oils...I wonder what I could find at Trader Joe's. I love that store, but I've never looked for hair stuff there.

Just measured my hair. 33 inches on the nose! Almost back to where I was before my last trim.

So I just raided the pantry and refigerator looking for any useful ingredients, and am now wondering about the possible effects of the following:

-Chamomile tea
-Any other kind of tea
-Plain yogurt
-Peanut butter??
-Molasses??

I'm sure the last two are a bit of stretch as far as having any usefulness, but I saw them and couldn't help but wonder.  Roll Eyes I'm sure the others are worth doing some research into, though.

Hi Cairn, hope you don't mind me writing in your journal!

- Chamomile tea helps lighten hair I think.
- Any other kind of tea should be okay...
- Plain yogurt is a great conditioner.
- Peanut butter - NO idea about this one!
- Molasses is supposed to be good to darken hair.

Forget the peanut butter - it is almost impossible to get out of hair, as any mother of a messy child can relate to.

Thanks, bikerbraid. I figured that'd be the answer. Smiley

I did find a recipe with molasses, but it didn't do much for me...apparently it's supposed to help darken gray hairs, though, so I'll keep it in mind if I start going gray early. Wink

I bought some rosemary essential oil while vacationing in Michigan last week, and after one failed attempt to partner it with olive oil, am in search of a more effective way to put it to use. I only have a small vial of it, so I'm trying to conserve it, especially since I can never seem to find essential oils around here.  Undecided

In other news, school started today. Ugh, how boring. Yay for being a senior, though! Cheesy I'm taking some fun classes and like all of my teachers, except for my consumer ed. teacher who likes to repeat herself constantly and looks & dresses more like one of the "popular" girls than an adult, if you get the idea.

I went through a whole long hair routine yesterday, hoping to get it nice and soft so I could wear it down today and show it off. I had to go to sleep with it damp, and unfortunately this morning it was pretty greasy as well as frizzy (weird). I fussed with it for a while, but ran out of time and ended up throwing it into a French braid. I don't want to take the time to wash it again tonight, so I'll probably just do an ACV rinse or something. Or maybe chamomile?? We'll see how experimental I feel.  Tongue

I think there is, but I've never been to it; my family usually goes to Meijers. Thanks for the tip, though; I'll keep it in mind.

So I tried plopping last night (left it wrapped up while I slept), hoping to get some nice waves today. It worked quite well, and gave a much more natural looking wave than braiding does. It started out nice and bouncy; unfortunately it rained all day, which means Flat & Frizzy.  Undecided Ah well, at least I know the process works. I'll have to try it again on a drier day.

What evil bald legislature decided it would be a good idea to require 2 units of swimming in gym class in order to graduate? It's awful awful awful. I didn't put in any conditioner or wet my hair or do anything before getting in the highly-chlorinated pool, but shampooed and conditioned well after class. We're only actually in the water for about 20 minutes, so I'm not too worried about it. Still, when it's every day, plus all the heavy-duty washing afterwards, that's a lot of stress. My hair feels good now, but it's only been one day...I cringe at the thought of what it'll be like after four weeks.  Undecided Methinks I need to get some leave-in conditioner.

We need two years of high school PE, ugh! I'm so glad I'm a junior now - no more PE for me, ever again! Lucky you - only 20 minutes! We were in the pool for 90 minutes, 3 times a week, 6 weeks a year.  Angry

No more PE, lalala, doing a happy dance  Grin

You lucky bum, we have to take PE every semester all through junior high AND high school. It STINKS. And apparently it's only Illinois, too...I don't know anyone else who has to do this.

On the brighter side, I borrowed my friend's Herbal Essences Rainforest (is that the name?) conditioner after swimming today b/c I'd left mine at home. I reeeeallly like it, & it's been added to my long list of things to buy.

On an even brighter yet unrelated side, I mixed some honey with my conditioner the other day and it worked GREAT. It left my hair nice and smooth. Even better, I can mix it with my White Rain conditioner, which normally leaves me too greasy, and it works fine. As long as I don't put too much on my scalp...

[steps up on soapbox]

In this day and age of couch potatoes - I'm glad to hear some school districts recognize the importance of physical fitness.  I know you may not appreciate it now, but you are learning life long skills and hopefully developing good habits for later in life.  Take it from an "oldster" - you need to be physically active!

Your PE classes are good for you.  Be thankful for them.

Thanks bikerbraid, I know you're right. At least, I sure do appreciate now what swimmers have to go through. I still ache from doing 20 minutes of laps yesterday.  Roll Eyes

I'm getting a lot more comments and admiration on my hair length in swimming class than I usually do. I've had questions about how I care for it and such as well, which is always fun. Smiley

EEP! This just reminded me - I have clothes sitting in the washing machine!  Shocked Must go take care of that...

EDIT: ...and the reason that reminded me is because I had my swimsuit and towel in there as well. Wow, I'm really scatter-brained today.  Roll Eyes

There was a football game at my high school tonight, and beforehand my family went out to a pizza place for dinner. There was a table with a man & woman and their 20-something year old son near the hostess both, and while we were waiting to be seated the man suddenly turned to me and said I had really beautiful hair. His wife agreed enthusiastically, and asked her son if he didn't think I had nice hair. He just kinda smiled and nodded (I don't think he cared that much), but the other two were impressed, especially the man. I would've been a little creeped out, except that I never get compliments on my hair (on updos occassionaly, but never on my hair in and of itself), so it felt good. I was also glad my stepmom got to see that yes, some people really do like my hair. I think that was the best part of my night.

Oh, and we won the football game.  Grin

Just got back from visiting colleges with my parents...oy, I'm so sick of this whole process. I had a good time though. We visited Eastern Illinois University and University of Evansville. EIU was a good school, but it didn't do much for me; I'm not big on state schools, and it was more of my dad's choice than mine anyway.  Roll Eyes I LOVE Evansville though, and so do my parents. Small, scholarly, and very friendly. I stayed overnight with a student in the dorms. There were no events going on that night and not much to do right around the campus, so we just hung around the dorm, but it was fun. A good picture of typical college life. Ugh, I don't wanna go back to high school now...

So anyway...nuthin' new in the hair department, really. Though upon coming home I did discover a bottle of Mane 'n Tail conditioner in the bathroom - that stuff that's originally for horse hair but which people can use as well. I have no idea how it got there, but I've heard a lot about it and want to try it when I wash tomorrow. I also discovered a bottle of Suave vanilla shampoo. Yummy...

Dorm life!  I had a lot of fun living in the dorm.  Life long frienships can be made there.

Do you have any idea what you would want to major in at college?

bikerbraid, I plan on majoring in English. Evansville has a Creative Writing major, which I definitely plan on going for if I go there. I'd like to work as a freelance writer someday, or for a magazine or some other type of publication.

Urgh, it's so hot in this house, my hair is frying. I think I'm gonna go to Starbucks where they've got cappuccinos and A/C so I can study comfortably.

That's awesome, bikerbraid! What was it like growing up with two writers? (not really the place for this conversation, I know...)

----

I decided to try a new routine when I showered tonight...
I often have problems with getting the greasies b/c of a tendency to over-condition on my scalp, so I decided to try conditioning all my hair first and then shampooing my scalp. It worked quite well; my hair feels nice and soft. Of course I was also using different products, so that probably had something to do with it as well. I like the Mane 'n Tail Conditioner.  Makes my hair feel stronger. Smiley

Hey - it's YOUR journal - you can use it as you like - *I'M the interloper by posting!  But seriously, growing up with two writers, I was always encouraged to read books.  ANYTHING I wrote for school was checked by one of them.  I have a wonderful sense of good english, but can't tell you any of the rules for why!

I'm the same way. I guess it comes from reading "good english" all the time in books and getting used to the sound of it, but not learning the rules until later on in school. Kinda the same reasoning behind why people who speak English as a second language speak it better than its native speakers; they learn the rules right from the start, while we just pick it up from daily experience.

I'm a Conditioner Junkie

My sister lost her make-up at school yesterday, so I took her to Target this afternoon to get some more. While she was finding what she needed, I somehow found myself in the hair-care aisle.  Roll Eyes Target has a great product selection, and I ended up buying two conditioners: VO5 Nourishing Oasis Honey & Almond, and Tresemme Vitamin B12 & Gelatin Anti-Breakage conditioner. I'm such a product junkie.  Roll Eyes

But more happily, I actually had an intelligent conversation (if obsessing over conditioners counts as intelligent) about hair-care with my sister. She'd bought some John Frieda Brilliant Brunette a while ago mentioned how her friends actually thought her hair looked lighter. I told her how I'd heard the product didn't do much to darken hair, just enhance color (she's got lighter highlights), and then I told her how coffee is a good hair darkener. She seemed interested.  Wink But really, I was just happy that she was actually listening to and respecting my ideas.

So that was my hair excitement for today. I hereby ban myself from buying any more hair products for the rest of the year!  Shocked

Swimming Class

One cool thing about swimming in gym class (besides being able to shower after class so you don't have to take the time at home) is all the hair discussion that comes up. The other girls always marvel at the length of my hair and often watch intently when I wash it out after class. It'd be kind of awkward, but when you're all lined up under the showerheads against the walls, it's kinda hard not to be looking at the people across from you.  Roll Eyes

Today while I was combing my hair after class a couple of the girls mentioned how they'd never had hair past their shoulderblades. I told them how much easier it was to take care of and how you can do so much more with it. One of the girls agreed and said she wanted to grow her hair longer. It was a good conversation.  Smiley And only two more days of swimming class!  Cheesy Then I'll be able to put away my shampoo and try COing again. With the two new conditioners I just bought, I oughta be able to figure out a way to make it work.

I went to J.C. Penny's last night, and within the span of 20 minutes spotted three women browsing around the women's section with past-waist-length hair.  Shocked One woman was Indian, one was Mexican, and one was Caucasian with lovely blonde hair. I've never seen so many long-haired ladies in such close proximity at one time. I felt quite at home.  Smiley

I think school stress is finally starting to get to me - I found my first white hair today while sitting in the parking lot at school. I plucked it out and examined it for a while, marvelling at its length and paleness. It seemed coarser than the rest of my hair. Interesting...I've been trying to imagine myself with long white hair, and just can't see it...I guess because I can't picture myself being old. Urgh, that's creepy...

Changing color hair doesn't necessarily mean old.  My hair started turning white in my mid/late twenties (thanks, Mom!).   I think (note that I don't know) that my hair is all totally white at my hairline X years later.  Let's just say that although color is not great for one's hair, my hair has remained its original color and I do fine .... It just is what it is, but I don't think a 27-year old with white hair is "old" & I haven't gotten too upset as 27 is now but a memory and my hair is -- imagine that! -- still the same nice auburn color!!  Each to their own, but I like maintaining my color, and was not keen on white hair in my 20s.  White, grey, or whatever, you are as old as you feel.

It's snowing!!  Grin And it's actually sticking!  Cheesy It's absolutely gorgeous outside. It's been snowing all morning, and the snowflakes are nice and big. It usuallly doesn't snow like this around here until after Christmas. Of course it'll probably all melt to slush by the end of the week, and I'm sure I won't be so excited when I have to go scrape off my car to go to work, but hey, I can enjoy for now through the window while sipping my egg nog.  Smiley

As far as my hair, things are going just peachy. Im following a pretty basic shompoo+conditioner routine, since I haven't had the time (or, frankly, the interest) to try anything more elaborate. But I'm clean and healthy, smooth and still growing, so hey, I can't complain.

Happy Turkey Day! Smiley

Snow Rinse

Wow, I haven't updated in ages. But since we're still on the subject of snow...

It started snowing last night and has been falling pretty steadily ever since, and we *finally* have a nice white blanket that will probably stick around for the rest of the winter. Beautiful to look at, but horrid to drive in. I skidded around so much on the way home from school; I swear it's by the grace of God alone that I didn't crash or damage anything (or anyone!).

I'm also wondering about the possibility of doing a snow rinse for my hair. And no, I don't mean going outside and shoving my head into a snowbank.  Wink I'm thinking of gathering a bucket of *clean* and *fresh* snow and letting it melt, then using it to rinse. I've wanted to try a rainwater rinse for a while, but we haven't had enough rain. I think I'll cart in some snow tonight while it's still falling and I know it's fresh, then let it melt and use it next time I wash.

I've decided I want to try hennaing my hair, as soon as I can get out and find a store that sells it. Ever since my mother dyed her brown hair auburn, I've wanted the color for myself as well. I don't want to use anything chemical, however - especially since I have "virgin" hair - but of course henna is all natural, and based on the pictures I've seen, I like the effect.

In other news, I've decided to quit my job. It's just too much time, and school is exhausting enough without the added stress of working 20+ hours a week. The main reason I got a job in the first place was to earn money to pay for my 3-week trip to Germany this summer, and I've earned more than double the cost, so it's just not worth it anymore. It might take a while to readjust to not having all the extra spending money, but hey, if I did it before, I can do it again. I graduate from high school in five months anyway.  8)

The Product!

I think I've finally found it - The Product that my hair just can't live without! Though it'll take a few more tries to really know for sure...I was browsing around my local organic foods store (looking for henna actually, but no luck in that department), when I discovered an all-natural, store-brand citrus conditioner. Considering my hair's dislike for most normal conditioners and love for more acidic products, it seemed like the perfect thing for me. So I COed with it yesterday, and my hair actually LIKED it! I do think I used a bit too much on my scalp, but overall it was a grand success. And cheap, too - only $1.99!  Cheesy
They also had jojoba oil for a considerably good price - the first time I've ever found it anywhere - so I bought some of that too, and am absolutely loving it. My hair is so soft and shiny.
And then today I FINALLY bought a Boar Bristle Brush at the store while doing some grocery shopping. And on Saturday I got a pair of good cheap hairsticks that actually keep my hair up (just to tide me over until my LongLocks sticks arrive  Wink) and some all-natural, organic ACV, since my stepmom used up the last of what we had for cooking.  Roll Eyes Now I have some just for myself.

So finally, I think I'm able to check off everything on my Hair Care Wish List - for the time being, at least.

I also went out tonight and collected some snow to melt for a rinse next time I wash. So, everything is good in the world of my hair. Smiley

Anais, just make sure to keep in mind when collecting the snow that water takes up much more space when frozen than as a liquid. I gathered about 3/4 a gallon of snow one morning, and by the end of the day had about 2 cups of water left.  Roll Eyes

Henna!

Okay it's official, I LOVE henna! I'm actually surprised how well it turned out, considering how dirt-cheap the stuff was. In the right lighting it looks reeealllly red and a little unnatural, but it should tone down in the next couple days, and overall I'm very pleased with the result. So soft and thick and shiny, and it smells like cloves and rosemary. Yummy.

Umm yeah, that's about it for now. Think I'm gonna go to bed now. I can't wait to shock everyone with my wild hair tomorrow. Grin

Henna...and hairsticks!!

Sorry if I freaked you out with that, styg. The only time it really smelled that bad was when it was just the henna by itself. Of course, you've also said you hate the smell of cloves, so you might not've liked how mine turned out either. But after two days, the smell isn't noticeable at all unless you get the hair up to your nose, or if it's wet.

...Y'know, I bet mixing in nutmeg or cinnamon (or any other natural spice, really) would also help the smell, if you wanted to try one of those. I've seen a couple recipes with honey as well, though I don't know how much that'd affect the overall smell.

In other news...

I just got my pair of LongLocks 'Emerald Mystery' Original Hairsticks in the mail yesterday!  Cheesy I LOVE  them! They're so gorgeous and hold my hair better than any other sticks I've used. They're shorter than I expected, but I like that; I hate how my other store-bought pairs stick way out. And the jewels are green, which complement very nicely my newly-hennaed auburn hair (the color's settled in some, btw, and looks more natural now). I can see how these can easily become an obsession; I'm already longing to order more!

If I can find the digital camera & figure out how to use it, I'll post some pictures; until then there's no words to describe how incredibly pleased I am, not just with my new hairsticks, but with my hair in general. Life is good.  Smiley

Hehe! When I received my first LL hairsticks I also thought: "These are beautiful, but so short!" The truth is- they don't need to be a millimeter longer to hold hair. Now that I own more quality hairsticks, I've stopped using my cheap, long hairsticks altogether- the extra length feels just annoying, especially when my LL sticks still hold my hair much better.

Enjoy your sticks! They sound really gorgeous.  Smiley

Wow, it's been ages since I've been here! First I was caught up in finishing school, then graduation, then I was in Germany for three weeks...and, well, LongLocks just kinda fell off the priority list. But I'm back now!  Smiley

Anyway, not much has changed in the hair department. My ends were getting straggly so I trimmed off about three or four inches. My haircare routine has stayed pretty much the same. My summer's been super busy and I'm out of town for most of it, so my hair's taken a bit of a backseat. Which is probably a good break for it, actually...well, that's about it for now; I'll be around a bit more from now on!

wondering...

I bought some new henna supplies while I was in Germany (I found 'em for pretty cheap), but now I'm stuck trying to decide when to actually use it on my hair. I could do it now, but I'm leaving on July 15 to volunteer at a camp in Colorado for a month. While I won't be getting real down and dirty, I'll be scrubbing floors and cleaning toilets and such, so I'll probably be washing more often and won't have time for giving extra care to freshly henna'd hair. I'll also be around strong cleaning chemicals and possibly swimming in the camp's chlorinated pool. Plus I'd like it to look a bit more fresh before I leave for college. I could do it after returning from camp; the problem there is that I only have four days between when I return and when I have to leave for school, so I'll probably be too frantic with that whole transition to put extra time and effort into the actual henna-ing process. Plus if I waited till then I wouldn't have much time for a strand test, and I don't know how red the stuff I bought will turn out...I want it to look fresh when I go to school, but not that fresh. And since dorm bathrooms aren't exactly the ideal place to henna one's hair, I don't have any other options.

I think I'm leaning more towards doing it now, but I could use a second opinion. What do you all think?

In other news, I'm going to try sock curling tonight, per Anais's instructions on her wonderful website.  Smiley I just showered (C-COW-C; again, thanks to Anais! My hair feels wonderful!) and am waiting for it hair to dry a bit more before putting it up, but I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Well I'll be using my own towel, so that's not a problem - but good point...

The sock curling turned out pretty nicely, though I could definitely use some more practice. And next time I might try three or four sock curls, instead of just two.

Hi Cairn Wink

Welcome home and it's always nice to see you around. I'm glad C-COW-C is doing you well. I think you should henna after you get back. Do the strand test before you leave. That way you can have the red to look forward to when you come home. Grin

Your camp volunteer work sounds really fun Smiley I used to do unit leader stuff for local GS weeklong camps, and I miss that. Chores are a great excuse to meditate. Have a wonderful time. Pray.

Hugs

That's actually a pretty good idea...the only thing that worries me about henna-ing when I get back is that after I do it, I won't be washing my hair again until I get to college. And if this henna is anything like my last attempt, I'll be getting lots of color runnage for the first few washes, which I would have to deal with in dorm showers with my new towels (yet to be bought...). But then, I could always buy red towels, and dorm showers probably aren't the cleanest anyway...

OooOOoh, that's a tough decision Undecided I'm sure you'll work something out though. I'm trying to figure out when to henna too, so that people don't have to see much of my orange scalp.

Good luck

Fun new 'do

I saw the movie Dark Water last night; not very good, and not very scary (not to mention the screaming 13-year-olds who made up most of the audience), but Camryn Manheim's hair was very nice, and I really liked Jennifer Connelly's funky braid 'do from the first half of the movie. I tried to do it on myself, but my hair's way too long; I did, however, come up with a pretty funky style:
-Start with two braids started at the top of the ears.
-Single knot the two braids at the back of the head, so they cross just above the nape of the neck.
-"Tie" the braids together two or three more times, depending on the length, building the knots on top of each other.
-Tuck in the ends and secure with bobby pins and/or hairsticks.

I really like the result; kind of "Italian peasant" (well, that's the first thing that came to mind). It's also very light - so much so that I was almost afraid at first that it'd come undone, but it stays very well. I really don't notice the weight of my hair at all. I think it needs a bit more practice to get it looking a bit neater, but all in all a successful 'do; very nice for lazing around or doing housework.  Smiley

The best laid plans...

So I ended up deciding to henna my hair today. I wanted to do it this morning, but ended up having to stay at church for much longer than expected, so it got pushed back to the afternoon.

Anyway, I was about five minutes into applying the stuff to my head when my stepsister knocks on the bathroom door to tell me that my friend from across the street is having a barbecue with all our friends and came over to invite me. Perfect timing, right?
I just finished glopping the rest of the henna on as fast as I could, but I still have to let it sit for at least three hours (I did a strand test for four, & even then the result wasn't as bright as I'd hoped for). Plus we're having our own barbecue here at my house this evening for my church youth group, and though I could ditch that for a few minutes to run across the street, chances are that party will be done by that time.

I wouldn't be so upset, except ALL my friends are over there, and this would probably have been one of the last times I'd get to see them all before leaving for college, with all the time I'm out of town this summer. Grrr.  Undecided

(On the bright side, the henna application was much tidier than last time. Hopefully the color will turn out okay too.)
