Hello!
Jul 14th, 2004 at 7:54pm

Hello everyone! I have a hair story, and I'm looking for some advice. All throught my childhood, I loved having pretty, shiney long hair. When I was about 5, I got this really nasty tangle or "rats nest" and it just wouldn't come out. Finally, my mom told me she had to cut it. After that, I always had short hair, never more than shoulder-lenght. I hated it, but I was afraid of a repeat tangle. When I started middle school (5th grade), I decided to give it a try again, and by the end of my freshman year in highschool, it was hip-lenght. I was the envy of my best friend Rachel, who had very fine hair that never seemed to grow. I was very careful with my hair. I braided it all the time since it was too heavy for an up-do. Anyhow, after HS, I went off to college. Good for me, bad for my hair. I never seemed to have time to do anything with my hair. I started using 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner so that I could get up on time to make my 8am classes. I stopped braiding it at night, since I was so tired at the end of the night that I just went to bed. I used a hard plastic-bristled brush and brushed my hair while it was still wet, since I didn't have time for it to dry. And probably the worst thing, I stopped trimming it. Well, now two years latter I'm out of college and my hair was a frightful sight. I went to my stylist who had been cutting my hair since I had it. She was shocked at how my hair had suffered. I told her to cut off the damage, so she did. Now, I hadn't trimmed it in two years, so I had split ends galore and it was longer than I could manage. The damage my neglect had caused traveled up to the middle of my back. That is how long it is now. Now that I am out of college, I have more time. I can't stand my hair being this "short". I don't remember the brand of shampoo I used before all this, and now my problem is that I don't have a ton of money to experiment with. I was wondering if someone could recommend shampoo and conditioner separates for medium to oily hair, for use every other day, or every third day. I have dark blond hair that, as I said, ends at mid-back. While I don't consider it thick, it isn't thin, or fine, its kinda inbetween. I want to use "natural" products, I prefer not to put potentially harmful chemicals in my hair anymore. Any suggestions are welcome!
Thankyou,
Mai

Welcome Mai,

Are you naturally 'dark blonde'? Mai is an East Asian name and I was just wondering. means Cherry Blossom. Anyhoo, I don't personally have any experience with organic products, being a Suave user. My hair is midback, coarse, and thick, and I only do well with lots and lots of silicones.

...but if you do a search for "organic", with Longlocks Salon's search function, you should find many threads discussing silicone free products and natural hair care. I vaguely remember some brands... Australian Organics, Aveda (organic or not?)... Don't take my word on it, I'm from the recently-formed (dimethi)Cone Club. The "Au Natural" category also has lots of discussion that you may find useful. Recently we had a thread about making your own natural hair products. Leia and other makers can help you out if you're interested :P

Great to have you with us,

Anais Satin

Welcome Mai!

Anais has referred to a number of areas on the boards that can hopefully give you some help with deciding what to try.  Fyi, Austrailan Organics is MUCH cheaper than Aveda (which is not all natural).  My hair is dark blonde and fine.  I use Austrailan Organics as my primary shampoo and conditioner.  I even use the conditioner as a leave-in.  It leaves my hair very soft and manageable.

Sorry to hear about having to trim your hair to a length that feels short to you.  Your story of college reminds me of my college years.  Who has time for hair care????  My hair was probably a frightful mess after graduation, but I wouldn't have even known!  I had no idea how to take care of long hair back then (in the dark ages).  Look at it this way.  Now you have the opportunity to grow out nice and healthy hair that you can be proud of!

What was your degree in?  Are you now working in your field of study?

Thanks to both of you for the advice! To answer Anais' question truthfully, yes my hair is naturally dark blond, and I role play online. Mai is my the short form of my character's first name, Maiama. I have been roleplaying this character for over 4 years, and I have come to envy her knee-length, deep red hair! Lol!

My degree is in Software Applications and Programming. I am trying to get a job in my field, but that is prooving very difficult. I have a couple offerings that I am looking at that are more like technical support. One that I am very interested in, has some web programming on the side.

Back to hair! I revieved my first Long Locks hairstick today! The Bermuda Midnight Geisha Hair Pin. And let me tell you, that the picture doesn't do it justice! It is the most beautiful piece of jewelery I have ever seen! My sister called me at work to tell me that it came, and I asked her to bring it to work! Lol, of coarse she didn't because she was on her way out, but the rest of the day went by verrrrry slowly. The first thing I did when I got home was open it and start playing with it! It was definately more gorgeous than I was expecting! I like the deep colors, especially blue and purple. I put my hair in a bun with the hair pin and had my mom take a picture with my digital camera. If you want to see it, I'll have to send it through e-mail.

OOOOOOooooo, we need pictures of your hair with your new Giesha stix!  (Or maybe Rapunzel will give us the link to it?)

Computers!!  My son graduated a year ago with a degree in computer science and has a great job as a sys admin.  My hubby is a network engineer and I develop, program, support and train payroll/benefits software.

Good luck in finding a job!

I sent Rapunel a pic through e-mail. I need to start a pic gallery somewhere online so you will be able to see. Don't feel like making a site yet, maybe sometime in the near future tho!

Nice pictures, and nice, shiny hair.

In my opinion split ends are more of an effect of hair damage than a cause. So all the mistreatment you did caused breakage, which resulted in split ends. Now that you'll be treating your hair gently and conditioning it properly, you should have no problem having healthy hair as long as you want it to be.

Oh,very pretty hair!Your updo with the Geisha-Sticks looks great!  Shocked
As for organic shampoos I could recommend Beauty without  Cruelty Shampoo & Conditioner.I like them a lot, although they are not very moisturizing(can't use them in winter when my hair's quite dry.
Mill Creek Jojoba Shampoo & conditioner are also great-and then of course,my all-time favourite:Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm Wink

Great pictures!!  Thanks for sharing them.  You have very pretty hair and a great bun.  It shows off the Geisha stick beautifully!

Hey Rapunzel!  You need to see this stick in action - great job!

Don't fret! Rapunzel is going to post a pic here in the thread, then you should be able to see it! Rapunzel to the rescue! (A bit different than the fairytale goes, hehe.)

You can have shiney hair too! I posted this in another thread, but I'll copy it here for ya!

When I was in HS (and I took care of my hair) it would get all dreary in the winter time. That was the worst time for that to happen because I was involved in the biggest winter event! The Christmas Concert! I was lucky enough to get a solo my senior year in the choir, but my hair didn't match the mood! To make my hair bright and cheery again, I went to the store and bought some lemon juice. I mixed about 1 tablespoon of the juice with a normal amount of my leave in conditioner and, well, left it in! I would apply it in the morning and wear my hair up in a bun all day. I rinsed it out in cold water before bedtime, and that was my routine for about 2 months before the concert. My friends nicknamed me "lemon girl".

I wouldnt recommend this if you are sensitave to scents. It will feel a little sticky, and whatever you do, if you have beautiful sticks, DON'T USE THEM while doing this. They WILL smell like lemons long after this "therapy" It made my hair very soft and shiney! Goodbye dull winter hair!
