Pincurls
Aug 1st, 2004 at 3:22pm

First, I'm not sure which board this "belongs" on, as it fits in so many categories. It could easily go in Prom styles, Wedding styles, and Wiggin' it, as I "helped" it a little.

I was reading about Victorian-style pincurl hairstyles (sorry, didn't bookmark the page) where the hair is put up in little flat rose-like buns all over or over part of the head. This serves two purposes:  first, it looks pretty in itself, and second, it curls your hair, while disguising the fact that you're going out in public with your hair curled.

...

Twist, twist, twist, loop, twist, twist, loop, press down flat, twist, twist, loop, wind, wind, adjust, pin.  Repeat until finished.

I found the little minibuns rather tedious to do standing by the mirror, but after I got the hang of the process, I was able to do it while reading at the computer. The little buns are held together with small hairpins, and anchored with a bobby pin.

First I put up the back in a french twist topped with a bun, then turned the front into 3 minibuns. I was unhappy with the look of the twist, took the hair down, and used it to complete a circlet of little buns.  At this point I still had one lock to bun up at my nape, but no place to locate it there, while there was an empty spot on the crown that I couldn't redirect the bunlet to. So I ran the twist around the perimeter, as far as it would go, and anchored it there as an accent.

Then I took a toyokalon switch I have, made it into 3 minibuns (sort of in a triangular configuration), popped it on top, and fastened it with 3 bobby pins.

I sprayed the whole thing down with water, so when it's finally dry it will have lots of bounce.

I think that with practice, I could get the buns to cover my crown in the first place, and not need the attachment, though the mass of curls would undoubtedly be smaller.

So I guess I'm ready now to throw on a t-shirt and head out to Walmart to buy a Sunday paper, would you say?

It's only been up for about an hour now. I may take it down tonight, but more likely I'll put a hairnet over it and take it down in the morning. I'll be sure to take a picture of what it looks like then. Right now it's so humid, it's going to take a long time to dry.

I took it down, picked it out and combed it. This is what it looked like:

...

I'm not sure how wet it really was, although it seemed wet at the time.  Some of the ends have a nice curl pattern to them, but others don't. I think I might use a styling product on my ends next time. Or maybe spritz each lock separately as I put it up.

Thinking back on the hairstyle:

I liked the pincurl updo, and the style was very elegant. I need a way to keep it up on my head, though, as the unanchored curls want to migrate down towards the back, which looks messy at the back of the neck. I'm thinking either an alice band or beginning with littly ponies.

I didn't like the downdo all that much. The volume in the length was nice, but it made my hair rough-feeling, and there was a really odd and unnaturall curl pattern at the scalp.

So I think I'd do it again, just not for the purpose of putting wave in my hair.
