Any tip to get an even hair colour???

Hi!

MY hair's natural colour is brown and it reaches down to the middle of my back. My "problem" is that I have a very uneven colour. The reason for this is that when I had shorter hair i used to die it. Sometimes brown, sometimes black and sometimes red.

Then when my hair got to my shoulders I decided I didn't want to colour it anymore. My hair colour at the time was black with something like 5 centimeters roots with my own natural brown hair colour. I wen to a hairdresser and told her I wanted to get back to my original colour (brown).

She told me she could do highlight on the top layer of my hair, and then dir the whole thing brown and it would look natural.

So she did....as I said earlier my hair was black, and my roots lighter (my own colour). The highlights wouldn't "take" ans she checked often but nearly nothing happened. She left it on for 8 HOURS!!!! and then as she was washing out the stuff, she revealed my roots that had turned WHITE and the rest was kind of AUBURN.......no need to say I was really pissed off! She coloured my hair brown (it didn't look perfect, though) and OF COURSE the very first time I washed my hair; the roots were BLOND and the rest BLACK and RED!!!!

Unfortunately I moved away the same week so I never got to tell her what a bad job she did. I have died it brown a couple of time but the colour is still quite UNEVEN: black at the ends with highlights that are auburn-ish then a light area of 5-10 centimeters and then another 10 centimeters with my own colour (brown).

Any tips? tricks?

I really don't want to do anything chemical now, I've left my hair in peace for a bout 6 months now....

I suggest you start trimming your hair at 1/2" per month until you get the damage cut off. Either that, or find a hair colorist who is skilled at fixing serious hair mistakes. But I think you'd be better off just putting up with it as you grow it out, rather than continue to damage it with more chemical processing.

It sounds like the stylist made some pretty big mistakes and unfortunately you are the one who has to live with it. If the stylist was part of a national chain, you might contact a local salon to see if they can help you correct the situation. If you do decide to color again, be sure that the person is an experienced colorist and knows how to correct the mess.

Otherwise, as Katherine has already suggested, just work at trimming it off.

Regular hair color will not lighten dark hair color. I can't believe she kept that on your hair for so long! She should of known better! Any how I would try to seek out a master colorist to fix your hair if thats what you want to do. And condition it well and keep those ends trimmed. If your hairs real damaged it might be best to just keep trimming the color off untill all the black is gone. Good Luck

Wow! That hairdresser must have been highly unexperienced. I agree with everyone else in that you are better off gradually trimming off the bad bits.

Black is extremely difficult to get out of hair...especially if it's damaged. In fact, no matter how much you dye it brown or any other colour, your hair will absorb more pigment in the damaged areas because it is more porous and that is what gives the uneven colour.

(I know from much experience! Once, I took the advice of a friend to colour my hair brown several months after having had a perm. It went a lovely brown on the roots, but black everywhere else. NEVER AGAIN! It took me AGES to get it back to red.)

Hope is not lost, however. As Sherry suggested, keep conditioning the ends and you'll eventually even out. (Regular oil treatments really helped me, along with trims.) Avoid anything drastic until you get it under control and you'll be grand in no time.
