Werewolf feet
Mar 31st, 2005 at 4:33pm

I realized my new hair vitamin supplements were working when I was getting ready for bed and noticed my toenails--HAD GROWN---way faster than normal.  I looked like I had claws.  Werewolf feet!  It'll be a pain come sandal season, having to keep up with the pedicures, but that's what comes to mind when I think about my new hair routine; my feet.

I started a journal in Feb, handwritten in a nice little notebook, but it's nearly impossible to relax and write with the cats sitting on it every time I bring it out.  I can't decide whether to just transcribe it or just hit the highlights.   I'll see how things go.

It's Thursday and that means hairwash night!  I wash my hair on Sun, Tues, and Thurs; I'll wash Sat if I'm going to be in public for any length of time.  Stupid oily scalp.  I've been C-COW-C and it seems to be working.  I tried CO and my hair was terribly over-conditioned.  It seems to be sensitive to conditioning.  I only use V05 clarifying contioners since the heavy ones leave it so limp.  Oiling works well, though.  Last weekend I put some of my liquid cold cream recipe on my hair Sat and Sun and, OK, icky greasy but was it nice and soft on Monday.  The new herbal rinse is working well.  My hair smells so nice and it is softer.  The greys are blending in a bit, but it's not affecting my temple streaks which is good cuz I LOVE my grey temple streaks.

I ordered some shampoo bars from www.chagrinvalleysoapand craft.com  I can't wait for them to get here.  They're supposed to clean and condition--maybe I could skip the first C.  That Herbal Essence shampoo seems to strip my hair even after I dilute it a good 10:1 with H2O and spike it with conditioner.  My final conditioning is V05 mixed with aloe and honey which works wonders.

Enough for today.  I do want to post my fav. recipes of the moment in case my 2 cats, aka "pure evil wrapped in fur" decide to destroy my hard copies.  Rumpole already tried to shred my W-2 form but I caught him.  Ha!

Herbal Hair Rinse

1 tsp each dried catnip, rosemary, and sage
1-1.5 cup boiling H2O

Steep around an hour.  I use as the final, final rinse, after the cold water rinse I squeeze the excess water out of my hair, dip the length in the rinse a couple of times and pour the rest on the scalp.  Leave in.  The boiling water seems to deactivate the catnip cuz I've not had any problems with the boys attacking my hair after using.  A splash of ACV can be added as well.

Fox's Leave in Shea Conditioning Cream

1 part conditioner
1 part shea butter
1/2 part oil (I use jojoba or macadamia)
eo of choice (optional)

Melt shea, cool to room temp.  Blend all together.  Won't blend completely till cool.  Just stir occasionally.  You can't let the shea cool completely or it'll solidify again Smiley  To fill a 2 oz jar, 6 tsp conditioner, 6 tsp shea, and 3 tsp jojoba.  Use on damp hair.

Super Conditioner
conditioner
aloe
honey

I use a 1:1 cond. and aloe with a squirt of honey.  Can use as a final conditioner or can leave in for an hour or so before rinsing

Liquid Cold Cream

I tsp shea butter
oil of choice--I've used macadamia and sweet almond so far
1 ml lavender eo
0.5-1 ml rosemary eo
1 drop tea tree eo

Melt shea in a couple TBSP oil, put in 2 oz bottle and top with remaining oil.  Add eo.  Originally made 4 oz but the eo faded.  Used the remainder for deep conditioner with fab results.  Gotta love the shea.

HOW TO TELL IF YOU'RE SMART

Read recipe:  equal amts ACV and bentonite clay, apply to face, wash off when dry.  Helps remove blackheads.

Mix clay and ACV.  Oh, dear, that'll never work, it's much too dry.  How should I make it more paste-like?

If you said add water, you're smart.
If you decided to add more ACV, not only are you not smart, your face is red and tingly and thank God for lavender water and aloe is all I"m sayin'.

At least many blackheads are gone.  I'm actually surprised I still have a nose.

Used the Strawberry and Cream Moisture milk by VO5 for my 1st C and in COW.  Hair sticky and tangly.  I glopped on my Kiwi Lime VO5 and that made it better.  After the spectactular failure of the coconut milk soak--tangles for a week!  and I usu don't tangle--I think I must conclude my hair doesn't really like protein.  Which is kind of a shame since it was fun to look in the mirror with coconut milk dripping down my forehead and screaming, "A robot!  Ash is a g----m robot!"  Hee.  I need to watch Alien again.

So, Strawberry moisture milk has been regulated to the status of shaving cream.

Thursday is also toner making night.  I blew it off, I"ll do it Saturday.  Or not, the 'rents are coming up this weekend.

Recipies:

Rooibos toner
1 part strong rooibos tea
1 part ACV
2 asa tabs, crushed

Mix.  I make about 2 oz/week.  The asa won't dissolve completely, so I shake it up when using.  My thick oily skin doesn't mind the high level of ACV which is probably why I still have a face today.

Asa/Honey mask

4-5 asa tabs, crushed
honey

blend to a spreadable paste.  Apply to clean skin, let dry.  Wash off with warm water, and immediately apply a biore strip (I have a recipe for homemade strips I'll try later when I run out of the storebought.  It'll be a while; Big Lots had a sale.  All hail Big Lots!)  The asa draws blackheads to the surface so the strip can grip 'em and it does get out a lot of glop.

My mortar and pestle from American Science and Surplus came in and I love it, love it, love it!  It crushes those catnip pellets easy as anything and makes short work of the asa.  I can mix right in the bowl part which I'm thinking is the mortar, but I may be wrong.  (No, I"m right.  The pestle is the poundy thing, and the mortar is the bowl.  Mortar is also "a mixture of lime or cement, sand and water for bonding bricks or stones or a short large-bore cannon for firing shells at high angles."  Learn something new every day.  Thanks, American Century Dictionary!)  I also got lots of glass bottles and corks.  ACV is murder on corks, I need to think of a way to protect them.  Maybe dip them in rubber cement?  I don't think my usual soln--clear nail polish--would work.

Summary of today:  no more protein and ACV is to be respected.

Sakina:  asa is aspirin.  I use the cheap, non-coated stuff from Wal-Moo; it's about $2 for 200.

Oh, yeah.  The salicilic (sp?) acid is what helps the blackheads.
Thanks!

Whoever thought it would be a good idea to start daylight savings time at the start of spring allergy season should be kicked repeatedly in a very tender place.

My Mom and I went shopping Saturday and it would have to be the worst weather of the year.  Cold, sleety, rainy, and oh, my the wind!  But still we soldiered on, brave in the face of adversity and fully cognizant of our responsiblity to shore up the economy in these desperate times.   Woohoo!  KMart has a bunch of Scunci stuff!  I'm addicted to Scunci even though half of the stuff doesn't work on my hair; it's so thick.  I loved my spider clip but the tooth broke the second time I used it.  I got an octopus clip and why did I even entertain the thought that it would  fit over my bun?  Ha.  It actually does clip my twist nicely and the bent under teeth don't poke my scalp so that's a plus.  I also got some of the new non slip stuff.  I'm wearing the butterfly clips today.  They said they were for fine hair and I can see that--the clip part is not as rounded as the regular ones--but they've held very nicely.  The inside has this coating that I think is silicone to reduce slipping.  I just took one off and it didn't stick to my hair.  I also bought one of those fake hair scrunchie things with the little braids, and Mom wondered why I'd buy fake hair when I have so much already  Grin  Went to Sally's and picked up 2 packs of those 3 inch hairpins.  I don't know where those things get to; I must be like Witch Hazel and scatter them wherever I go.

Also bought a little 4 drawer storage container to put my little barrettes and claws in.  My hairtoys are much more organized than my taxes are.  'Course they're lots more fun.

Today I'm having a bad hair (F) day, meaning the front looks crappy.  The back looks pretty good, but the front is flat and the grey seems more prominant.  I have more grey than my dad and he's almost 60!  His side of the family almost never goes grey.  My brother took after his side; he's a year younger than I and has no grey at all.  Thanks, Mom. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Yesterday was wash day.  I used my liquid cold cream to deep condition and did the usual C-COW-C.  I used VO5 clarifying citrus as C1 and COW and VO5 Kiwi Lime to finish.  I may have put a bit too much C in the COW since my hair was a bit greasy afterwards.  I may amp up the shampoo since I only put about 1/4" in a 4 oz bottle.  I made more toner, too.  I"ll have to make more liquid cold cream soon, I'm down to 1/4 bottle.

Spoke to brother about protecting corks from ACV.  He suggested silicone corks.  I only need it for one bottle and I don't want to order one cork and pay shipping for it.  He suggested soaking the cork in pariffin to slow the destruction.  That might actually work, but I don't have pariffin, just beeswax which is probably too thick.   Last night, however, I had a brainstorm and simply cut out a circle of plastic and wrapped the cork with it.  Duh. Tongue  I'll see if I can wrap the cork with embroidery floss to keep on the plastic and make it look nicer.  Seems to be working so far.

My hair is growing but not nearly fast enough.  (does it ever? Smiley ) I estimate it will take 3 years to get to goal--2 years to get to waist, then cut off the damage and another year to grow back to waist.  I"m not going back to BSL again; this has been a real pain.  It takes entirely too many accessories to keep my hair up.  I miss the days when it only took 2 hairsticks.  Friday I had to use 2 barrettes, 2 elastic bands, six 3" hairpins, one bobby pin, one sock, and 2 hairsticks  to make a bun.   It's depressing.

No recipies today.  I left my real-life journal at home.

Blast from the past, 2/13/05 to be exact, when I tried the Hair Rinse for Brunettes:

1 tsp dried Rosemary
1/2 c boiling H2O
1 cup strong lukewarm coffee
1/4 cup ACV
vitamin E capsule

Steep rosemary in H2O bout 30 min until has cooled to lukewarm.  Combine all ingredients in spray bottle and shake well (cut open vit e capsule and add the inside;discard the capsule part).  Spray on hair, cover and let sit 30 min.  Wash as usual.

They didn't mention that the spraying part is really messy and you should be naked in the tub with the shower curtain closed unless you really love washing the walls, floor, bathmat, cats.....  It's really smelly, too.  Vinegar coffee, ick.  The vinegar smell fades, but my hair stunk like old coffee for a week, though the next wash took care of a lot of the odor.  I put peppermint eo in my hair to cut the smell--I'd forgotten that.  Roll Eyes  Didn't work, though.  Didn't seem to affect the grey at all.  My hair was really soft, but that's the vinegar.  I did try it the next week using black tea instead of coffee.  It didn't smell as bad, but still didn't seem to do anything special for my hair, at least nothing special enough to justify the mess.

I want my Chagrin Valley soaps!  Galadriel already has hers (pout  Sad ).  Her review was so positive, I just can't wait!

Ahem.....

0.75, that's ZERO POINT SEVEN FIVE, as in 3/4 of an inch growth in 36 days!  Woo and hoo!!!!!!

I also managed some semblance of a french twist today, so it's quite a red-letter day all 'round.

I used Suave Lavender conditioner for my final C last night.  It's seems a tiny bit heavy, plus although it does smell pleasant, it does't smell a bit like lavender.  So I put some in a bottle and added lavender eo and aloe gel.  I"ll see how it works tomorrow.  It already smells better.

On a hair-related note (fur-related anyway), Agatha's fur still hasn't grown but barring snow I'll let her out this weekend.  Last night she was purring the theme to "The Great Escape".

I updated my recipes last night and I have over 90!  I'll never make most of them I"m sure; I know I'll never go through the trouble of making conditioner out of boiled flax seeds, especially when I can get semi-lavender smelling Suave for 96 cents at Big Lots.  I am going to try this one, though:

Homemade Pore Strips

1 TBSP unflavored gelatin
1.5 TBSP milk

Combine in small microwave proof bowl and heat on high for 10 seconds.  Apply glop to clogged areas of face, let dry (takes up to 30 minutes, which will be a problem with my glasses.  I hate being functionally blind for half an hour)  and peel off.  If it works, it'll save me a bunch of $$$.  I imagine you'd put it on clean dry skin.

If anyone tries this, let me know how it works  Smiley

My soaps arrived yesterday!  They look pretty and feel nice and soapy; unfortunately I can't smell anything worth a ---- lately.  Stupid allergies.  Between the worst allergy season I've seen in 35 years, the start of daylight savings time and my onset of menses this week I feel so crappy I could have the plague and not even know it.

Anyway, I got:

soaps:  chocolate orange twist
            citrus woods green tea
            cucumber lime yogurt
            dead sea spa
            orange coconut cream
rosemary lemon  & aloe (free since she only had
a couple of slivers of the orange
                          chocolate soap left)
            shea rose clay

shampoos:  herb garden
                   rosemary lavender aloe
                   rosemary mint (free sample)

Most of the soaps were sample sized and the orange cream goes to Mom.  I was going to give my SIL the orange chocolate soap, but I guess I"ll keep the slivers for myself, oh darn!  Tonight is hairwash night so tomorrow I"ll post my review in the thread in the product reviews section.

I bought a 10-pack of Magic Grip Hair Pins at Kmart last Saturday. (click here http://www.ulta.com/showcase/hairaccessory.html to see what they look like if you don't know.  They're the 6th one down.  They're 2.99 at ulta.aom and 8.95 at Vermont Country Store.  I suppose VCS depends on business from the google-impaired)  I used them yesterday and today to hold my ersatz french twist.  I must admit I didn't think plastic hairpins were any match for my hair but they hold wonderfully well.  I only needed 4 to hold up my hair today and I probably could get by with fewer.  Very impressive.  The Good Hair Days website said if the plastic tines spread while wearing, wrap them with a rubber band at night and they should be ok in the am.  I'll try that; one did spread a bit.

I started a new recipe:

Herbal Vinegar Rinse

2 cups ACV
2 oz lavender buds
1 TBSP glycerin
10 gtt rose geranium eo

Heat ACV to just below boiling and add lavender.  Remove from heat and let steep x 1 week.  Strain and add other ingredients.  Store in the refrigerator.  To use, mix 4 oz vinegar mix to 4 cups warm water.

I did the ACV/lavender mix last night.  They aren't really clear on the final proportions--I wonder if they mean 4 floz or 1/2 cup?  Time will tell.  I also wonder how necessary is it to keep it in the fridge.  With all this vinegar I would imagine it would keep well in a cool dark place where I keep all sorts of other things, like onions and my basic good nature.  I also won't be using rose geranium eo cuz I don't have any, and I don't need more little amber glass bottles cluttering up my sink.  I'll probably use lavender eo or maybe rosemary.  I could throw caution to the winds and use both!  I am a wild woman.

My hair is already getting oily!  The front is all shiny and not in that "where are the cameras for your commercial you sexy thing you" way, but in the "soap and water are inexpensive and readily available, why don't you try some?" way.  I may have to try scalp washing on my alternate days this summer.  Tongue

Used my new Chagrin Valley shampoo bar last night.  For full details, see the Product Review page.  Thank heavens Galadriel mentioned using an ACV rinse afterward or I might have panicked when my hair did its wig impression.

Got my beads from Silver Crow Creations--two yellow and pink lampwork monkey heads and a gorgeous large skull carved out of coral.  If I'm alive at all I need to make hairsticks this weekend.  I"'m sure I have a big chunk of turquoise somewhere to partner my skull.  That'll make 2 skeleton-themed hairsticks I"ve made, not to mention the devil duckie ones.  I need to wear my duckies again.   8) I also got some lampwork cat beads from ebay.  They did promise they'd be in pairs, but really, yellow cats and mauve cats?  Ick.  The black are nice and the blue ok, but yellow and mauve.  Lips Sealed    Maybe someone at work will want them.

I'm becoming hair obsessed.  Everything I see I wonder if I can put it in my hair.  "Pizza?  Sure!  The grease is conditioning and the pepperoni decorative!  Bring it on!"  Mom bought a new skirt this weekend and I took the ribbon belt for my hair; I tried to talk her into the green skirt since I like green better than peach.  She suggested I trot myself to JoAnn's and buy whatever color ribbon I darn well please.  Grin  I love my Mom  Cheesy

The ACV with the lavender buds is a funky purple blue color with an equally funky smell.  I put it in a vintage aluminum thermos thing with a glass liner.  I'll strain it next week and use it when I use the shampoo bar.

The bats in the roof were fighting last night.  They've been fighting alot lately and it keeps me up.  What do bats have to fight about anyway?  If it's about lack of space they shouldn't have moved into my gable in the first place--it's cramped up there.  They'd better decimate the mosquito population this summer if they're going to screech all night.

I found an interesting looking recipe for an aloe body butter.  I'll make it when and IF I get my BPAL imps.

I was browsing the Majestic Mountain Sage website.  They've got so many oils--emu (supposed to encourage hair growth), cranberry seed (lots of omegas), red raspberry seed (supposed to have some sunblocking properties--wonder how it would do in hair?), rose hip oil (so pretty--mainly for mature and damaged skin and between my natural oiliness and vampiric tendencies, my skin isn't going to mature any time soon, but it's so pretty!),  aloe butter--aloe vera infused into coconut oil!  I do NOT need any oil at the moment, I don't I don't I don't I really don't.  It'll take years to use up the jojoba I have now, not to mention the macadamia and sweet almond....I bet cranberry oil would make great cold cream.....stop it!  No more oil!  At least until the rose hip is back in stock  Grin

Used the Rosemary Lavender Aloe shampoo bar again last night.  Hair was slightly sticky, but not poofy and big again.  I did use a little lavender Suave with aloe and lavender eo before washing and my hair was much oiler than previously.  I'll use the condit. again Tuesday and see if that was the difference.

Shaved my legs with the Dead Sea Spa soap.  For once my legs weren't dry and flaky.  Yay.

I hate massaging my scalp, although I know I should; it does increase the oil but decreases my flakes.  Someone (was it Bikerbraid?) mentioned they massaged their scalp with aloe.  I tried it and it did feel nice, but it make my hair stiff.  Then I found a recipe for aloe aftershave and made it.  I worked really well--no stiff or gloppy hair:

1/2 cup aloe vera gel
1.5 TBSP distilled water
1 TBSP witch hazel
10 gtt eo of choice (optional)

Mix.  Use.

I didn't scent it, but rosemary or lavender would be good.

I also made a zit-zapper clay mask:

1 tsp green clay
1 tsp honey
1 tsp yogurt or sour cream
1 gtt rose geranium eo

Mix, apply to clean face.  Let dry and leave on for about an hour.  Rinse with warm water, followed by a splash of cool water.

I used bentonite clay lavender eo, and added a tsp of ACV.  It worked nicely and some of my zits did dry up.  Next time I"ll use a drop of tea tree oil and maybe a drop of peppermint.

I'll be travelling soon and I don't like to travel with bottles of oil--messy.  I didn't think about this when I ordered from Chagrin Valley, so I made my own lotion bars.  I wanted something softer than the usual bar so I could use it to clean my face and put on my hair.  I started with what seems to be the standard recipe on the internet--equal parts beeswax, butter, and oil--which makes a nice bar but not soft enough, so I added a 1/2 part of oil.  Now they melt readily at body temp. and so far work well on my hands, lips, feet, and face.  I'll pack them in a rubbermaid container in case of accidents.  I used 1/2 cup macadamia oil, 1/4 cup jojoba oil, 1/2 cup beeswax, 1/4 cup shea butter, 1/4 cup mango butter, contents of 2-3 vit E capsules  Melt together, pour into molds.  It made four 3 oz bars, two 4 oz bars with about an oz left over.  I used at least an  oz yesterday on my skin.   It doesn't absorb as quickly as straight shea butter, but the effects last longer.  I didn't scent them and they do smell like the unrefined shea, but I might add some eo next time I make them (after the melting, let cool a bit).

Stopped using my BBB two weeks ago and I have noticably fewer splits.  I miss my brush, it worked so well to distribute the oil through my length.  I've been using a cheap wooden comb from tenderheaded.com, and it does help a bit but it isn't the same.  Sad  I was supposed to get a comb from Ric Carpenter for my birthday, but he's in Hawaii now and not taking orders.

Wearing a french twist again today, this time I was able to secure it with hairsticks!  I"m wearing my new monkey hairsticks I made this weekend (small round pink fire-polished Czech glass bead, monkey head bead, tiny gold bead, large pink Czech bead, gold plated heshi bead on pink 6" hairstick.  It's cute; looks like a fat-bellied monkey with a topknot.  And no extremities).  The front of my hair never looked good with a french twist; slicked straight back looks terrible on me and the hair loops up strangely on the crown when twisting; I tried parting my hair ear to ear and fastening the front part with a barrette for fullness--not too bad, but not my favorite solution.  Today I combed all my hair over to the right side--no part--and did the twist.  Front looks pretty good and the back looks good.  Sides, well....  It's promising, I"ll work on it.  I'll bet by the time I have it all figured out my hair will have outgrown a french twist.  Ah well.

Scalp very oily, so last night I took a glob of the aloe/water/witch hazel mix and added 2 gtt of rosemary eo and massaged it into my scalp.  Scalp is less oily, hair isn't stiff, and rosemary smell faded within 5 minutes.  Didn't have to scalp wash this am; I was afraid I might after using the aloe.   I also had bad flaking last night and it's better today though that may have been from the massage.  The aloe mix shouldn't hurt my scalp or clog it up; it's all water soluble after all.

My face is much oiler too.  Must be the warmer weather.  I'm breaking out terribly and nothing seems to help.  Next time I make toner I'm adding some dried rosemary to the rooibos and increasing the asa to 3 tabs.  I have been slacking off on my water intake so I'll increase that again as well.

Just a note:  using only hairsticks to hold my twist fell out in about 7 hours, whereas if I use the good time hairpins and just decorate with the sticks it stays up till I take it down.  I used the 6" sticks; I wonder if the 8" sticks would hold better?  The sticks also slid a lot, I may need to put the little hair safe rubber bands on them to keep them from slipping out.
