I received my winter outer bonnet I ordered from Christian Coverings (www.christiancoverings.com) today.

I don't know how warm it will actually be (will know that in a couple of months). It's made of black sturdy fabric and lined with flannel. For a bonnet, it is plain, soft and inconspicuous- I don't think that people will stare at me when I go out wearing it. I think it's also very pretty.  It's sturdy and well made and covers also the ears. And what's most important, it's very comfortable and fits A LOT of bunned hair in it. I can even wear my hairsticks in it comfortably and inconspicuously! Because of the fit, one can't wear hair down with this, but if you are looking for a winter headcover that fits comfortably over buns, this is definitely it!

As the name suggests, Christian Coverings is a conservative Christian company (like Plainly dressed, I suppose) and they talk about Jesus during the ordering process, but their service is good and in my case, much faster than what they promised on their website  . Besides Christian Coverings, Plainly Dressed sells winter outer bonnets, but their design is a bit different.
With shipping to Finland (home door instead of post office) the cost was $36,45 which I consider very reasonable.

I can see these bonnets coming in handy on a -30c day at the bus stop!!    I have a satin one I use to wear when hubby and I did the craft fairs selling bee's wax candles and stuff.

Oh my goodness, takes me back to my childhood!  I grew up in an area with many Plain Communities.  Thanks for the stroll down memory lane

I've now worn the bonnet for a couple of times.

I still like it. It keeps the bun (and hairsticks!) in perfect shape, doesn't cause static and it is quite warm. I haven't noticed any curious looks from people...but this is Finland where most people would probably think that Mennonite is some sort of mollusk fossil. 

But, it certainly takes some getting used to. It sits on the head (or should I say around the head...) unlike any other headcover...and though it is very secure, it doesn't feel like that at first! Also, the ties under chin feel weird to say the least. I got used to them quickly though and now the bonnet is nice to wear.

The hair is easiest to manage if it's center parted- otherwise the brim can create quite a halo in a short time. Center parts suit me, so this is ok with me.

The only big downside is, that it leaves forehead and hair front from ear-to-ear line exposed. So, in coldest days a bonnet probably can't be used as sole protection. I plan to just pull my hood over it. Even then, it should be much more comfy than a scarf, and now when the weather is still milder, it is good to use alone.
