Deciding on a Type of Henna
Nov 19th, 2005 at 10:38pm

I'm thinking about dying my hair with Henna because growing out my perm has made my hair fade from brown at the roots to blonde from chemical damage at the ends. I'm getting my ends trimmed soon (I'm in college so I'm waiting until I get home since I don't know the salons around here very well). I'm thinking of dying my hair a brownish color. I don't know if I want to go light or dark brown yet. I'm thinking a rich dark brown, but I don't want it to be blackish or dark red like most of the henna I've seen. Reddish brown would be okay as long as it's more brown than red. I had my hair dyed brown once and hated it because it looked so dull. I want something that will have highs and lows. I'm also looking for something that will fade in case I don't like it at first (don't worry I will do a strand test first.) So far I've look at lush.com and Morrocco Method. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it!

You can check out Mountain Rose Herbs (look under the hair care section). They have different colors, but I don't know if the henna contains synthetic dyes. Mehandi has body art quality henna, but you have to adjust the color yourself which can be tricky and I don't think it fades very much. Good luck!

I spent a long time reading the Mehandi site Juri linked before I used henna on my hair.   After reading their site, I would not recommend using anything that claims to be henna and claims to dye your hair any color other than red.  You can adjust the color yourself, just do lots of tests on shed hair from your comb and read all the different recipes.

Good luck!

I agree with Sasha. Although I've never henna'd my hair, I've thought about it a lot, and it seems like either body-art-quality or unadulterated henna is the safest to use, especially if one's hair isn't completely virgin.
