BB, thanks for the info.  Smiley Today, unfortunately, all I have time for is a quick update, so please continue to be patient.

g_l  and La Diosa, thank you! La Diosa, I have just begun learning to sew. It is difficult, but I believe that if I just won't give up, eventually I will learn to sew well enough to my needs.

Speaking of sewing, I have done a little of it again. I had this old coat that had a broken zipper, so I thought that I will try to repair it. I had nothing to lose and a serviceable coat to gain. This little project was A LOT harder than I had thought- the main reason being that my sewing machine just hated  four- sometimes 6-fold thick wool fabric. BUT, I fought like a madman in the War of Clubs and finally succeeded. My seam is not as neat as the old one, but it holds and the new zipper works. So, now I have a perfectly serviceable "country coat"- good enough to wear to grocery store and to garden in cold weather.  Smiley Hadn't I been able to fix it, I would have had to spend another €100 to getting a new country coat, so I am quite happy. Encouraged of my success, I have now started working with my 3rd skirt. I have also bought fabrics for my next project: aprons. I am going to finally have decent, practical aprons that fit nicely and cover me well. A long time dream -and one that I haven't been able to fulfill by shopping since stores just don't carry this type of things.

I have also some great work-related news: I have been INVITED to give a speech in a very interesting and a rather important international conference. Now, young researchers like myself just don't get that kind of opportunities, so I have been extremely lucky and apparently have managed to make a very good impression on a certain occassion. This will go a long way in improving my puny CV, and what's more important, I will get an opportunity to voice my opinion on rather important matters on an excellent forum. I have already started to prepare my speech... Right now, I feel like a lottery winner and find it almost impossible to erase a huge grin from my face.

Hair: Clean, and as today has been a very windy day outside, it's been a mess all day. My fakkare bun has been wonderful, but my baby hairs just go wild in the wind and by the time I got to my workroom, my look was far from professional. Even aloe vera gel was powerless. So today was a great day to work in a place where looks truly don't matter at all. Tongue For tomorrow, the forecast promises heavy rain, so I suppose that I can forget wearing a pretty hairstick bun to seminar session too.

The past week has been incredibly busy for me, but I think I'm finally getting things back to order again. Let's see what I have been up to:

Work: I have been busy preparing my conference representation, with my Doctor's thesis and a few other things. I don't quite get it how it has seemed during the past week that everything imaginable has required attention right away. But at the moment I'm quite happy of seeing that things are getting done.

Wedding preparations: We have picked them up. Cake, flowers, invitations etc. Besides the cooking project we have only a couple of things on our to-do list. I think we'll make it.

Country living: The snow is here on "on and off" basic- right now I think it's melting again. Before the last snowfall, there were a couple of warm days and we were able to finish the last of our garden works and now our garden is in great shape.
We have been heating the house every day now, and in addition to that I use the woodstove to cook. Our electric stove is mostly gathering dust in these days. We haven't done many Christmas preparations this year- in the middle of wedding celebrations and preparations we just don't have that much energy for yet another celebration. So we're going to take it easy.

Sewing & crafts: I have sewn a lot. I started with my third skirt that ended up becoming the best of all. Then I ambitiously took aprons as my next project. I had this Edwardian apron pattern that looked just what I had been looking for, and decided to start with it though it looked a little complicated. It was a positive surprise though- I managed to complete it with no great difficulties and it has proved to be a wonderful apron. I am going to make more. I'll ask T to take a picture of this creation.
Besides sewing, I have also knitted and crocheted...in fact, whenever I have had a free moment I have done something with my hands. It's been fun.

Hair: Of course, all this productivity comes at a price. I have returned to my hair neglect habits (read: lack of hair habits). I think I will have to make a point of reviving my old good habits when the new year comes.

Christmas just seemed to fly past us, and now we are busy getting ready for New Year, for wedding party and for my conference trip. On top of everything, the flu we've had for a while now has made some comebacks. Wet and cold weather doesn't probably help. Now I just hope I will be well by the end of next week when I will have to leave.

Hair: Just before Christmas, I received a soap and shampoo bar shipment from Chagrin Valley. I feel that I just need to give some special kudos to Orange Creamsicle soap- it's divine! Chocolate Orange soap has temporarily disappeared from selections, but I think this new one will make the wait more than tolerable.  Cheesy If you are Ida's customer- try it!
I think my hair has grown since the trim- sometimes I feel the ends tickle my back way below BS! Otherwise, I am still neglecting it. I am planning to do a dusting soon, right when I find my dusting scissors. As far as styles go, there's nothing new: plain buns with various hairtoys are still my favorites for the daytime, and for the nighttime I haven't yet decided a new favorite style. Everything I try seems to be difficult one way or another.

Craft projects: I have sewn my second apron, a white apron for baking. It turned out well -I'm definitely getting hang of this sewing thing, and am even enjoying it! Being able to work at my own pace, at the peace of my sewing corner seems to make all the difference. My seams are not perfectly straight yet, but otherwise my work is neat. My biggest difficulty at the moment is finding fabric. Many fabric stores in Helsinki have closed during the past decade, and the few left sell mostly curtain and interior decorating fabrics (is that the right term?). There are a couple of stores at Lohja, but they are very small. And everywhere, clothing fabric sections are full of fancy fabrics for things like evening gowns and wedding gowns. So, plain fabrics good for sewing simple everyday clothes are the hardest to find! I have now located a couple internet stores where the prices are so good that it is reasonable to buy from there- I just need to make sure that I buy enough for several projects so the shipping costs per yard become low. Neverthless, I am glad I decided to learn to sew -homemade clothes are simply great, and I know that as I keep on learning, they will become even better.
I also finished crocheting the kitchen curtain that I have been working with almost since we moved in here. It wasn't a big project, but it has been a secondary project all the time and therefore it has progressed slowly.

Country Living: Lumi went to see a vet for the first time in her life. It was just a check, and went very well. We talked about neutering operation, and decided that the best time to perform it would be in late April or early May unless no big difficulties (like false pregnancies) develop.

I am going to start a new journal again in the beginning of year 2007 and am now in the process of thinking a good name for it. Haven't come up with anything good yet though.

Wedding preparations: Trouble! My flu is almost gone, but T has a fever. My mother's arthritis has worsened so much that she can't help us with baking. So, it's just the two of us and I have the conference trip in the middle of everything!
On the positive side, I have now tested freezing some baked goodies, and it seems that at least cakes and pies stay just as good as freshly made ones. So, next week I'm going to do some serious baking and freezing!
T's father is going to buy us star binoculars for a wedding present. Exciting! We have been talking about starting observing stars since we decided to move to countryside, but our budget hasn't allowed for any extra buys. Excellent quality star binoculars will be useful even after we get a telescope (good telescopes are EXPENSIVE!), so they are a good buy.

Hair: I'm just about to start warming the sauna. Do I have enough energy to do a Snowytreatment or do I not, that's the question.
I'm once again going through "my hair is so thin, I'm depressed" period. A mild one, luckily- they always are. My hair may be thin in the ends, but at least it isn't short. But sometimes the fact that my single braids look like a rat's tail gets me... not that I would wear them THAT often, but neverthless... *nagiti nag* Lips Sealed
Or...could this be a sign of that I just haven't worn enough buns with gorgeous LL hairsticks lately?

Work: I'm more than a little worried about my next year's funding. At the moment the situation looks bad and it may well be that I will have to look for a job in spring. Funding of scientific research (except maybe in engineering and medicine) in this country is inadequate beyond description. About 50 well qualified people are fighting for one grant- that's the estimate I've heard. And, they say that the real difficulties start at post doc level. Roll Eyes [/rant]
I understand why everyone is talking about moving abroad...unfortunately, for me that is not an option.
I and T have decided that if my last application will fail, I will try to search a part time job from near home. It would be hard to continue developing my theory while doing a full time job, and it wouldn't do any good for our family life either. Some things that we have now that I've been able to be mostly at home cannot be compensated with money.

But, tomorrow's New Year's Eve and we have fireworks  Cheesy. In any case, my current troubles are small potatoes compared to the troubles I had in last New Year. I survived then, and again, I have a lot hope that solutions will present themselves when the time is right.
