Itchy scalp
Jan 11th, 2006 at 12:56am

I have had an itchy scalp for a really long time. It seems to have gotten worse. I have used evertying from T-Gel, T-Sal, Selson Blue, Nexus anti Dandriff and a few medicated shampoos that my dermotalogist gave me such as Clubex, Zooma another one that I an't remember the name.

I'm getting my hair permed again on Satruday. the last time was a year and a a half ago. However, this problem occured before I started doing anything to my hair.

What can I use in the meantime to make the itch go away without it smelling bad or ruining my perm once I get it?  Will this get worse from the perm chemicals?

My scalp itches too.. it's mostly from a buildup of dandruff that does not flake off. Instead it binds to my sebum and sticks to the scalp. I manage it by soaking my scalp and gently scratching the gunk off. Vinegar rinses also help me by degreasing and killing bacteria.

Do you know why your scalp itches? Is it dryness? (can be helped by something like jojoba oil)
Or is it a medical condition like eczema or psoriasis?

Our ladies have excellent suggestions for you...

Itchy scalp can be caused by several different problems, such as Anais suggested.  It would be best to find out what is causing your itching.

The chemicals from the perm may temporarily resolve the itchiness, or make it worse. If it gets worse, try diluting a moisturizing conditioner, and apply it to your scalp.

Good luck.

My sister in law had this, and the doctor told her it was because she had a yeast infection.

What Christiana said is quite common.  Is your itchiness a seasonal condition (i.e. only during the winter?) or is it all-year?

If your scalp is dry, the dandruff shampoos might be making it worse.  Maybe you should get a second opinion about your scalp condition?

Another thing is to not give into the itch.  It can cause more itching and you can break the scalp.

I hope everything works out for you.

My scalp used to itch too. It got better when I discovered that itching signifies dryness. Doing regular deep treatments, moisture treatments and spritzing with rose water has resolved the problem.

Here's one recipe that's really good in moisturizing:

Snowy's Deep moisture treatment

1 part fave conditioner
1/4 part aloe vera gel
1/4 part honey

Mix the ingredients in a cup and heat in a microwave 5-to 10 seconds, until the mixture is nicely warm. Apply the mixture to your scalp and hair. Let sit for a couple of hours (or even overnight) under a shower cap. Wash.
