Airport Security and Hairsticks
Jul 30th, 2006 at 12:36pm

Hey Everyone!
I am going to germany to visit my Oma (grandmother) and am flying out of Atlanta. I really want to wear my Longlocks sticks in Germany, and I don't want to entrust them to my checked baggage.
Has anyone flown with hairsticks of any sort? I've heard horror stories of confiscation. TSA says that knitting needles are allowed, so surely my non-sharp, non-metal, short longlocks sticks will be allowed. I was planning on wrapping them in tissue, putting them in a hard eyeglass case and putting them in my clear backpack carry-on.
Any advice?

Thanks,

Hippychik

You'll have to take any hair pins out when you go through security (took me a while to figure out what could be setting it off before pulling out 4 2 inch hair pins).  I don't think there would be a problem with the sticks though.

Hippychick, I hope you have a great visit with Oma!

I've just recently returned from a trip to S'pore and Indonesia with 4 pairs of LL hairsticks and had no problem!!!  I wrapped mine up in a silk jewelry roll, placed that in a heavy duty plastic bag (along with another small plastic bag of bobby pins, rhinestone mini combs and claws and a metal hairfork) and carried them either in my carry on bag (like a beach bag) or in the top zipper compartment of the front of my rolling carry on suitcase.  No one ever even asked about them.

Good luck and have a safe trip!!!

Yep!  I am happy to report that you can go through airport security with hairsticks without a problem!  Grin  I recently went to a convention, and I wore a pair of Susan's sticks, along with about three other pairs, wrapped in tissue individually and placed in a sturdy box, in my purse.  The airport security did give me the "crazy hair lady" look, but no problems..  Wink

Enjoy your visit!

I had the same worries last year, but I've gone on two flights with no problems.  But they were only within the US, so I'm not sure.  BB recommended bringing a self-addressed mailing tube or padded envelope so you can just send them back to yourself if they want to confiscate them.

I don't like to pack mine in checked baggage either, so I just use a jewelry roll inside my carry-on.
