Time for the CHOP ?
Aug 9th, 2006 at 2:34pm

Im so frustrated this week!

My hair feels ugly and boring this week, and im sick of looking at it- on top of that, ive had at least three people tell me i should cut it off. GUYS for that matter. I dont know what to do- i think the main reason i dont ever cut my hair, (and the reason i let it get long in the first place) is because i think i look worse with short hair, and my hair is pretty poofy from being so fine. Maybe i just havent found a good hairstyle for my face.... but im pretty discouraged about my long hair today!

Its not that i feel like my hair is hard to take care of, i just think it is looking bad!!

Anyone else ever get discouraged with their hair?? I dont know what to do!

Deeeep breaths, schmooey, hon. Relax. It's going to be alright.  Wink

Everyone gets frustrated with their hair from time to time. That's just part of growing it out. I don't know anyone - on these boards, for that matter - who hasn't gone through a period of "ugh! It looks horrible! I just want to chop it all off!!"

People have different ways to get through this. Some experiment with a new style, some with a new colour, some get a small trim...and some people just try to ignore their hair for awhile and hope that the "ugly" phase blows over. It usually does.

Think about what's bothering you most about your hair right now. Most problems can be solved with a trim, a deep conditioning treatment, oiling, aloe vera gel, or a combination of any or all of the above. Also, a pep talk from a long hair enthusiast (such as the lords and ladies on these boards) can help boost your morale.

If nothing else, just remind yourself that it's a phase. "This, too, shall pass." I'm sure that your hair is lovely and that there are many folks out there who would kill to have what you have.

Also, try not to let the guys' comments get you down. My father rags on me all the time to cut, colour and sculpt my fine hair into a Sharon Osbourne shag...but do you think I've ever done it?  Wink

Just be yourself and be strong, my long-haired sister. And definitely do a deep conditioning treatment.

Please don't chop!  I am sure your hair is very beautiful long!  Don't do anything you'll regret later.
How long is your hair now.  I love long hair on everyone!

We all go thru periods of being frustrated with our hair.  You are not alone.  Angel Spun has made some excellent suggestions to try before considering a major cut.

However, if you really feel you need to cut I usually suggest waiting at least 2 weeks before having a significant cut.  Then wait 2 more weeks.  If you still want to cut it after the 4 weeks, go ahead, but try to cut only an inch or two.  Trimming it up in small amounts can help you decide what is the best length for you without going too drastic.

Hang in there!  We are all rooting for you.

Hang in there Shmooey - if you decide you want to cut your hair, it should be because you want to, not because someone says you should.

I remember when I was growing my hair, I went through a bad phase.  That was between my shoulders to bra strap length.  Because my hair is so thick, it poofed out and made me look like a football player.  That's when I decided to get layers put in, just to give my hair some shape.  I figured once I get past the bad phase, I can cut the layers off.  I also started coloring my hair too.  I don't recommend coloring for everyone, especially someone with fine hair, but maybe natural colorings like henna would be a nice change.

Soon after that, I found the LL forum, and all the tips and encouragement here really kept me going!

So in a nutshell, maybe you just need to make a small change in your hair care routine, or a slight trim, even try a new bun or braid style - to boost hair-esteem!  (I know that's not a word, but I was stumped trying to think of something.  You all know what I mean!)  Wink

Haha, i guess im mostly frustrated because i havent felt this way with my hair before! Ive been growing it for... i dunno probably about 8 years... (3 intentionally Tongue) and never questioned it!

I think also the heat isnt helping- when i try to wear my hair down its just so darn hot and sweaty and frizzy  Roll Eyes Hopefully summer will end soon.

I dont think ill probably consider colouring my hair, just because its a really unique (I think, at least!) colour already- But i definitly will try to do a bit of pampering this weekend since i dont have to work on saturday! (Yippee!)

Thanks everyone for such fast support and advice! I guess i didnt realize everyone fights with their hair at least sometimes   Grin

Yeah, everyone goes through periods like that.  For a long time, I told myself and my stylist that I was just growing my hair till I found a short style that I liked.  Funny thing I never found it.  Luckily my stylist loves my hair long; she always says to me when I call for a cut, "your not cutting your length?"
I finally stopped feeling like my long style was a stage and embraced it as my style.  I no longer try to conform.  I have thick, poofy, wavy hair--hear me roar!!
I also long for fall weather--it's too hot--darn global warming.  Till it cools off, I will wear it up.
Hang in there and remember if you call the stylist, ironically that is when it will start to act right.  Murphy's Law or karma, take your pick.

I remember your hair shmooey. It's so lovely and unique. Don't ever change it's colour. You are one in a million,zillion... whatever. Cheesy Wink Wink
As others suggested a small trim, a new 'do but mostly some pampering. That's what I do. Pampering. And put a little bit of jasmin e.o. either in your conditioner, or your normal oiling medium (never use essential oils undiluted!). Or you can choose some other e.o. that you love its' fragrance. But, for me, an almost imperceptible whiff of jasmine when I move my head around  makes my day!-like passing by an old-timer's summer garden-
Ha!And see the boys' reaction to that too!  Wink Wink WinkNothing too strong, just subtle and sort of "now-I-smell-it-now-I-don't".
Jasmine, Rose, Ylang-ylang, monoi, or even "greener" smells. Give it a try some time

Yes, maybe you could take Saturday to be just a "hair day"!!  Try new things with it!!  I'm sure you'll make peace with it again!

What do the guys know?  I think deep down most of them like long hair, even if they don't realize it.  Maybe it's just too threatening to them if they're "pals".

At work sometimes a guy will catch me snipping a couple of split ends at my desk, and say "Why don't you just cut it?"  I just look like they're nuts.

Good luck Shmooey and I hope your weekend is great!
