Your hair is really getting LONG!  Great pictures.  I too have a whip for a braid.  It is really dangerous when I have a beaded Bunjii on the end of my braid.  I swear I could knock someone out with it.   Shocked

Keep up the good work!

A beaded bunjii, you say. I'll keep that in mind- I was kind of thinking how to create that "morning star effect" to my braid.  Wink

Suddenly, my life seems calm and cozy. I'm practically having a day off today, and have decided to use a big part of it to relaxing. With hair-related webpages, searching hair stuff that I just put somewhere after moving and in general just reconnecting with little niceties of growing hair as a hobby, that is. Right now I'm wearing a Chinese bun with Citrus Shine hairsticks. T was really right- after these months of neglecting my hair, it suddenly seems that I have so much "material" to wrap into interesting hairstyles.
I feel already relaxed and content. It is strange indeed, that when life is busy, I first let go of things that make it feel nicer and more fun...like hair pampering, exercising, music. That is just silly.

An LHC'er shared an interesting idea in my LHC photo journal where I posted the same pictures as here. She said, that bun covers can also be made of circles of fabric and a piece of elastic. I definitely have to remember that idea and try it some time.

I should have known... Wink

The result of spending time surfing and having an enabler as a husband is, that I ordered a pair of rabbit hairsticks from Maiden's Treasures. I also found these amazing earrings: http://www.bodyartforms.com/productdetails.asp?ProductID=2839 . I have not been wearing earrings lately at all, and I haven't really liked ordinary earrings much, but these are just lovely. So, I ordered them in smallest (14) gauge, as well as equipment to stretch my ear piercing so that they will fit. I guess that will be my next "project". At first I plan to stretch just my right lobe, as I think it would look cool. If it looks too unbalanced, it's always possible to start stretching the left one too. I'm not sure which gauge will be my final goal...I don't want to get a huge hole, just big enough to accommodate some beautiful jewelry.
An additional bonus, of course is, that applying this kind of little beauties helps me to communicate that I'm really not a laestadian or other conservative Christian in spite of my wardrobe that is going more and more plain all the time. Cheesy
I hope my shopping for this month ends here, this I can still justify by telling myself that they are birthday presents. Tongue

Anyway, I started my lobe stretching project today. I found one of the earrings that was used in gunning my ears a looooong time ago. It was a tad thicker than my other earrings, but I still managed to insert it into my right ear. Now my ear is still a bit tender...yeah, it's probably a good idea to wear this until my stretching toys arrive and I can start seriously gauging up.

Today isn't such a cold day, so I'm wearing a bun with hairsticks (MT's Asian Moon). I'm feeling a little flu-ish again...not fun. T has already a full-blown flu again. I don't know how it seems that this year, we spent the whole winter sneezing with just a day or two off in between. How is that possible? Oh well, at least we now have nice woondstoves and plenty of homemade blackcurrant juice. So, any misery is sprinkled with luxury.

Those earrings are very interesting - I've never seen anthing like them.  I gave up wearing earrings when my hair hit about BSL.  I am such a clutz - my hair kept getting caught in the earrings.  I'm not much of a jewelry person anyway.  I have a favorite necklace, my wedding ring, a watch, and my medical alert stainless steel bracelet (VERY fashionable  Tongue).  I'd love to see a picture of you wearing these when you are ready for them.

Of course I will post pictures! Smiley I'm even worse jewelry wearer than you are- the only jewelry I wear all the time is my wedding set (and because it's quite wide, I sometimes go with just one ring), and hairtoys. Right now, I have some beautiful jewelry -mostly from Kalevala Koru- that I like, but I still don't wear often. So, I'm quite excited to have found something that truly appeals to me! The selection of jewelry for slightly stretched lobes is surprisingly wide, so I think this is something that is worth the effort in long term. If it's not, I can just forget it and the piercings will shrink back.

Today, as is "traditional", I have the flu. However, my scalp is slightly gunky, so I have to take the risk and wash my hair in the evening. Tomorrow we are going to visit both T's parents, and I don't want to give the impressions of being the wife who has started to neglect herself after the marriage when the marriage is still less than two months old  Tongue. I had planned doing a deep treatment, but with this flu, I don't dare to spend that much time in the shower. So I think I'll just find my oils and give my ends a little S&D and a good oiling. That's more than what I have done in months, anyway!

Those are interesting earrings.  As a matter of fact, I would not had known what they were had you not explained.  I would like to see a picture of you wearing them as well.

I love the dangly chandelier earrings but my hair often gets tangled in them, so I usually have to do a pony tail or a half up half down style when wearing them.  And even then it's somewhat risky.

Sorry to hear that you have the flu.  I hope you feel better soon. Smiley

I will post pictures in different stages of this project. Right now, I can finally report that my lobes don't feel tender any more, and so I'm ready for the arrival of my new eartoys.

Work: My funding situation simply sucks, but otherwise, I'm doing wonderfully. During this year, I have rushed after documents that Evil Institutions have tried to hide from me, met astronauts and worked with developing a new theory. Today, my task is to reply to an inquiry sent to me by a member of Finnish parliament. All this, while at the same time being a happy housewife. I think it's been worth losing my social security benefits for a year (did I mention that Finnish research funding system truly, deeply sucks?)  Tongue .
I have once again received some very encouraging feedback about my work. Soon, I think I can stop being so shy when people ask me about my work and tell them that I am actually working with a new theory. World (and especially academic world) can be ruthless to people who claim such things, but I am really beginning to think that I can really put my money where my mouth is. That is just a great feeling.

Hair: I oiled my hair with jojoba after last wash (as I promised!), hoping that it has helped. The temperatures have gone down during the past couple of days- outside it's now quite a bit colder than in a freezer! We finally have a proper Finnish winter, and though that means lots of carrying wood, I am also enjoying it. But it is demanding for the hair, and I need to take better care of mine.
Ficcare has now opened a new website at ficcare.com. They also ship overseas! I can't wait until I have enough money to place a good sized order! While my fakkare-maximas clips have worked great, I still long for the real things. But, right now, I will just have to improve my patience and be careful about my spending until I have secured another source of income for spring.

Country living: I have been busy with craft projects as well. I really should take pictures/ have T take pictures of my new creations for the Craft Corner thread. I crocheted a doily over the weeked out of a thin yarn I found while rummaging through my sewing basket. I have also finished another apron (comes in need too, as I didn't have any clean aprons when I finished it). This one is my first one that I can call a quality piece! It proved that working in series is a good idea for a beginner seamstress. My first apron was a struggle, and the process has become gradually smoother until now I have finally finished something that is not just wearable but really good. I have still fabric left for two more aprons -in anticipation of garden season- and then I will change to some other garment.
We are still waiting for our star binoculars to arrive. Meanwhile, I am experimenting with clothing, trying to come up with a combination that keeps me warm even though I am standing still outside. Though I have lived all my life in Finland and have plenty of warm clothing, it is still challenging to find a good combination.

Your mention of completing another apron made me wonder what types of meals do you cook?  Are all of your meals Finnish or is it like here in America where on any given night you may be preparing foods from Mexico, Italy, India and so forth?

If you're still wearing (or wanting to wear) primarily dresses and skirts, may I suggest leggings, knee high socks and some type of boots?  --And don't forget undershirts, or even tee shirts next to your skin.  Actually, those items are good and warm with whatever you're wearing, be it skirts or pants.  Remember:  layers, layers, layers!  Smiley

La Diosa: My basic idea is to cook healthy and tasty meals. Some of my cooking is "ordinary Finnish", but I also cook Tex Mex, Italian and American food, sometimes also "modified Chinese". I make the meal plan for next week on every Sunday, and when planning I also try to use seasonal products. For health reasons, I try to cook a vegetarian meal every week, as well as a fish meal. Usually I also have one soup day every week. On weekends, I put a little more effort in cooking than on weekdays. Besides cooking, I also enjoy baking.
For example, this week's meal plan looked like this: (I use numbers instead of weekdays because on a day or two I usually eat my lunch in Helsinki, and sometimes one meal suffices for two days)
Day 1- potato and minced meat casserole, coleslaw, berry soup and cream
Day 2- Tagliatelle with mushroom sauce and cheese, red currants in caramel sauce
Day 3- Russian salmon soup, fried toast with strawberry jam
Day 4- Crispy baked chicken with rice, green salad, fruit salad
Weekend: Fried reindeer with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, Ålandian pancake with homemade plum jam and whipped cream

Trisha: I have so far met nicely my goal of wearing skirts as everyday clothes. However, I would not recommend wearing a skirt to anyone who wishes to observe stars in the middle of Nordic winter! When I go to observe, I usually wear long underwear, a warm middle layer (like a warm sweater), and a windproof outer layer consisting of a good winter jacket and long winter pants. I wear a cap and pull the hood of my jacket over that, mittens over fleece gloves, two warm scarves (one to keep my neck warm and other that I can use to warm my face), terry socks and boots lined with faux fur. Neverthless, standing still (as is necessary if you are trying to recognize constellations or stars) is a challenge. In above mentioned clothing, I can tolerate it maybe 40 minutes or so- and that is really not much time to do something that requires patience.  I've always seemed to tolerate cold rather well, but now my "polar self esteem" is rather low. But, if I don't find a solution soon, the coldest weeks of winters will be over and my problem has resolved itself, until next year.

Today, I found an interesting bottle on bathroom shelf- it said "XZ oil treatment" and seemed unused. So, before going to sauna I applied that. I think my hair can use a little oil, and XZ is a good brand. My hair is still a bit damp, but so far it feels nice.
I've once again "discovered" that I actually own a quite nice collection of claw clips. I guess that my new hairtoy storaging method isn't all bad since it's quite easy to "lose" things and then discover them.
I think they are slowly going out of fashion- people don't seem to wear them nearly as much as they used to. But, used in moderation they are a nice addition, and I have enjoyed playing with different colors. When I have more money, I might even invest in a quality piece or two...France Luxe makes nice ones, and also Headgames sells some beautiful silk wrapped clips. Yep, I'll put it on the list (besides Ficcares, hairsticks, Bronze Jewelers hairtoys etc. etc. )
Speaking of new things, in spite of my high hopes, my BAF earrings didn't arrive for the weekend. So, I'm still wearing the ugly studs (why, oh WHY does it have to have a bright red gem that does not really go with anything I own). Even the barbell I disliked in the start has started to look rather good in my eyes. Compared to the Red Devil at least, and I have managed to wear that for several days now.  Tongue I guess that's good... Maybe on Monday...

It seems that my hair is a little better -feeling stronger and more nourished- than it was before the oil treatment, but I must say that I was expecting more. It's not FABULOUS, like it is after doing a Snowy's Deep Moisture Treatment or my own Winter Hair Food mix. Next time, I will try to remember the needs of my hair when there is still time to let a good homemade treatment to simmer a while before sauna. But, it is progress that I remembered to deep treat my hair at all.

I also do oil treatments with olive oil, i have found thhat they work ok on the hair but are quite salubrious for the scalp. They only thing i detest is having to remove all the oil from my hair by means of clarification. I think i need to use less oil, this time i tried just applying the oil to my scalp and roots, however i will still need to clarify now.

Removing oil can be tricky! I usually manage to remove it all with two shampoo washings on successive days (I never, ever get everything away with just one wash no matter how hard I try).

Well, it seems that my birthday presents had a perfect timing! Today, I found from the mailbox the fantastic rabbit hairsticks from MT- they are gorgeous and make me smile. Also, my BAF shipment arrived!
When I examined the earrings, I realized that my ears have been originally pierced at 16 g- the stud I had been wearing was as thick as the 16 g barbell. Said barbell also slid to my ear easily. So, encouraged from surprising success I couldn't resist but try the new bone earrings. They also went in easily, no pain or tenderness whatsoever. They are very light and...did I mention gorgeous?

Look! But be aware, that the pictures don't do these gorgeous little things justice at all.

...
If you look closely, in this picture you can also see a rabbit from the MT hairstick peeking from behind my ear.

...

Since they are organic, I took them away and switched to my circular barbell. It's 16 g, so I'm going to buy a size bigger the next time I'm in Helsinki. I'm already planning my next order from Bodyartforms. Slightly stretched lobes are definitely my thing!

Hair: I did a s&d last night. The results were much better than I had expected. It seems that though my hair can take only a limited amount of abuse, it can take a huge amount of neglect and still be perfectly happy.

Country Living: Though winter is described as a quiet time in the garden, I wouldn't describe ours as very quiet. Tracks on the snow attest that night life in our garden is quite interesting, and in daytime, little birds are happily eating oats and fat we are offering to them. In night time, when the weather is clear, constellations are visible much better than in the city. Yesterday I managed to spot Saturn from Leo constellation. So, at every time of the day, there is something interesting going on right outside the front door.
We are already busy planning the next growing season. There is so much that we would like to do, that I frankly doubt that we manage to do everything in just one summer. On the other hand, even last summer, we accomplished quite a lot in spite of moving and other stuff so who knows! Besides adding new fruit trees, vegetables and flowers, we also want to make our garden a little haven for local wildlife. Besides a bathing bowl for birds, we are going to hang some nesting boxes for them. We also found that there are shelters available for bats, and of course we are going to get one of those as well- it would be great to have a few bats residing in our garden! For butterflies, we are going to plant some plants they are known to favor according to the recommendations of Butterfly Society. So, it appears that with only little effort, we can make our garden attractive to many species. We have so many ideas about how to develop our garden, that it's getting difficult to enjoy the restful time we now have.

Those are beautiful earrings!  I love them.  It almost makes me want to see if I can open the holes on my ears.  Wink

Happy Birthday!
by the way.  Are you doing anything special to celebrate?

Bats!!  I love to have bats around.  Hubby built a bat condo that we have above our house. (In theory it will hold 500 bats, but we've never seen that many around it.)  It is soo fun to watch them in the early evening when they are swooping down to snarf up all the blood sucking mousquitos we have!  I'm not sure what type of bats you have in your area, but they are different types of bat houses for different types of bats.  Make sure you are placing the proper type in your yard.  Also, it can take a while for the bats to find and occupy your house, so don't be discouraged if they don't show up right away.

Happy Birthday!!!  I visited the BAF site after you first mentioned it & ordered 3 new belly jewels.  They do have great stuff.

Your earrings look super!!  I think that type is going to be a big new trend.  I saw some at my local piercing place that are in the same kind of theme as yours but they're white and I thought "How gorgeous!  I could definately wear those style wise, but don't know if I want to stretch my holes".  I still haven't decided.

Thanks for sharing your pics!
