I actually enjoy stacking wood, along with other physical farmwork. Maybe in more moderate quantities than this time (I'm still sore...) but in principle I like it. Makes me feel productive and capable- feelings that are kind of hard to achieve in thinking work.

Hair:  I have been bored with knot buns for some time now. I've worn the style almost exclusively since my hair reached BSL. It is a wonderfully easy, sturdy and ok looking style, and as such it has been difficult to replace. Cinnabuns have been back for quite some time now, but they have not been the same as in shorter lengths. Making a good one isn't that easy and usually the result is still less sturdy than an average knot bun. So, knots I have worn, trying to keep things interesting by wearing different clips, Amish pins, scarves and caps.
Now that exhaustion had temporarily slowed my activities, I decided that it would be a good time to play with my hair a little, just to see if I could come up with something interesting. So, I tried to make a braided bun. When I looked the result from the mirror, I was simply astonished. The pitiful, lopsided braided bun I remember from my old attempts was gone. Just gone. It had been replaced with a GORGEOUS bun that looked balanced, decent sized... the very thing I had dreamed of but had labeled as something that might not be in my future.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy While this bun takes a tad longer to make than the basic knot, the gorgeous result is well worth it. The rope braid option will change the look completely without being more difficult to produce... boredom conquered!

Sewing: I finished my yellow dress/apron set yesterday and I still like how it turned out, unusual color or not. I think I'll continue my sewing projects today. It's light and productive work, perfectly suitable for the day when I don't feel 100% strong and sharp. And it still shortens my to-do list.

Happy day! The new Nightwish album Dark Passion Play has been released in Finland, and though I like the whole album, I have already picked my favorite song. It's of course Sahara, a great song and very special to me on top of general greatness (those of you who listen to NW will know what I mean when you hear the chorus... Grin ).

Besides that, T came home from Norway and applied Mobilat (a cream that relieves muscle pains) to my neck. Of course, I had the cream around the whole time. The thought of using it just didn't cross my mind  Roll Eyes- it's T's cream, and I haven't needed it. But, today I'm a little less sore...I even dare to hope that by tomorrow I'll be totally recovered from my act of heroism (of which T keeps on praising me  Cheesy).

Health: I did a short fitness test, and its result is that I'm in a good shape! Not average, mind you, but good! It warms my heart even more that the test was done using my own body weight as resistance, and as you know, I have to deal with a substantial overweight to start with and have therefore to lift much more than a normal weighing person would have to. Cheesy

Hair: My braided bun lasted very well yesterday. I just have to manage to make my braid very firm in order to do that. Today is a knot bun day with Honeymarble Ficcare beak so far. I think the clip matches wonderfully with the yellow dress.
I had time to check out some hair journals on LHC, and it was very encouraging to see pictures of members who have attempted to decrease the tapering of their hair by maintaining it for some time. It seems that everyone who has tried has had success- not dramatic success in the period of few months- a year, but clear improvement neverthless. I'm hopeful...and this encouragement to stick with the maintaining project until the end of the year came right on time because lately I've got these urges to forget about trimming regularly and to let it grow again.
My current length is ok, but I'm sure that the next 5-10 cm's (2-4 in) are what stands between ok hair and spectacular hair. I feel I'm about done with ok hair, I want to move on. But, of course it will be more fun with visible ends.

And here are pictures of my new styling attempts.

...

Regular braided bun on a day when my hair was very wispy. I see a lot of improvement since the last time I tried this. Cheesy

...

And here's rope braided version. Yes, I'm wearing my yellow home dress. I haven't still decided how well the color suits me...but I like it anyway.

I think you are doing great! It's a wise choice to maintain there a bit for improving horizontal volume.
Maybe I am biased  Cheesy because I find waistlength an almost perfect length in many aspects; I go to almost tailbone and then chop back to waist (in fact just did it again!)
Hmmm I think waistlength is when you can do a figure 8, maybe you could try that and it will be one more in your repertoire. I like wearing it a bit slanted, your primavera beak will be perfect for that Wink

Pretty, pretty, pretty!!!  That yellow is very flattering on you.  I think I like the braided bun best, eventhough your rope is pretty, too.

greek_lady: Thanks for encouragement. I agree that waist length looks good on many many people- including myself. This is the first longer length I really like. I think (well, hope since I have never been there) that I will like tailbone even better. But we'll see!
I haven't tried figure 8's for a while now- thanks for suggesting. They have looked a bit silly with all the tapering I have. But, maybe it has improved just like braided buns. In any case, the white Primavera clip is pretty enough to make any style look great! Cheesy

Sakina Thanks for compliments! Cheesy I'm still practicing and improving my braided buns. I got a good tip from LHC. If braided bun is started like a French braid, and not from ponytail, it becomes flatter and more balanced looking. Also, the flatter it is, the better.

Hair: Dirty but happy, in one of my ever-improving braided buns.
There was a lengthy haircare article in one of the free magazines we get (Yhteishyvä, if any Finn out there is interested...). It discussed the care of colored hair, and was scarier than the Lovecraft short storyl collection I just finished reading. Among other things, it appears that shiny hair is now out - "glass-like shine" is apparently unnatural, and less shiny, "healthier and more natural" look is better (keep in mind, they discuss the Finnish hair type, which is 1a/b i-ii, one of the shiniest hairtypes there is). Right. Well, with the advice offered there's no hope of achieving shiny hair- count yourself lucky if you manage to escape hair still attached to your head  Roll Eyes On top of everything, the same magazine contained again a lengthy advertisement of "hair pampering week"- a page with the title and special offers on an assortment of heat tools from straightening irons to heat rolls...
Now that I've thought about it, I remember seeing even before some campaigning against healthy, naturally shiny hair. I remember reading an interview of a colorist, she told among other things, that it's extra challenging to dye hair that is "too healthy". This world is getting crazier by the day, I tell you... But then, who am I to say such a thing...a lady in the yellow Amish dress and inappropriately long, unnaturally shiny hair she insists on keeping in a severe bun and washing with soap and vinegar...  Grin

Now listening: Orchestral version of Dark Passion Play. Pure awesomeness.

You're welcome!!  Cool

Thanks for mentioning the braided bun tip-I tried it today and really like it!  It took me 2 tries, bit I think this is how I'll do it from now on 'cause I love how it looks.

Thanks again!!! Grin

The braided buns are definitely better when started from a French braid. Mine have started to come out really neat. Today is the first day I'm wearing my bun secured with a Ficcare beak (honeymarble, of course). I'm not sure if a beak clip could be used for a braided bun if the braid was thick, but for once I think my thin hair is a benefit and I really like the look.

Life: Well, to say that I'm a nervous wreck might begin to describe things- in a couple of days I should know whether or not I have received a grant. My high hopes (as my application was truly stellar) have shrunk quicker than a snowman in Sahara, and there's absolutely nothing I can do except worry. If it turns out that I didn't get this grant, I will have to seriously reevaluate my plans for a research career. I know I have done good work, my research is good and has already proved to be interesting even on an international scale, I have excellent recommendations and my merit list is impressive. If that isn't enough to give me a chance to continue my research for one more year, I don't think it's realistic for me to expect to do a career in this country. And, going abroad permanently is really not an option for me. I'm not the ideal urban single researcher, I am a country philosopher. It's a shame, since I'm not really interested in anything except thinking, homemaking and writing my book. Somehow, all my talents are such that they make a wonderful life and gain much praise, if one can do without money. And doing something unimportant just for money for my entire productive life is something unimaginable to me- like a slow suicide. Temporarily, I can don pretty much anything, but it's not the way I want to live out my life. I'll figure something out in the end, that's for sure. But the thought of having to figure such out doesn't make me happy. At all.
But, even laced with these dark thoughts, my weekend was quite bright. We visited a rabbit exhibition on Saturday, and worked in the garden on Sunday. We are now preparing it for the winter. Summer has gone so quickly, and I know it's not just that our Northern summers are not that long to start with. But winter will be good too, especially if there will be snow. Feeding birds, lanterns, my dramatic snowmen...it'll be fun.
This year, we discovered that though flowers are lovely, kitchen garden is where our hearts truly lie. We love to grow and preserve our own food. So, next year, our first and most important goal is to expand our kithcen garden. I think this plan will fit particularly well into our overall restoration plans for the garden-the people who started gardening were also first and foremost growing food for their family. One can never go badly wrong while reviving a tradition. Smiley

Crafts: Finished cross stitching our wedding record. What looked like a small project turned out to take several months of careful work, but the result with all its nearly-invisible detail is very nice. It also taught me a lot about cross stitching. I now feel confident enough to undertake something bigger...
Before that, however, comes a plain sweater for T. I've already started to knit it, and it looks like it will be quick and nice to make. I hope to finish it in time for winter.

I hope you get that grant, G, and I hope that you don't worry too much.

I have never really looked at Ficcare's products.  I visited their site recently, can they really hold a lot of hair?  Should I get one?  What would you recommend?

Thanks!

Interesting about starting a braided bun with a french braid.  I guess I have always done that and never realized that the bun would shape differently.  I start with the french braid because I don't like to put my hair into a ponytail first and it is too hard to start a high braid without it being bound into a pony tail.

Good luck with the grant - if anyone deserves it, you do!

Thanks for support, both. It turned out that I may not know how the grant issue is for sure until 10th...I think I'll just schedule myself lots of heavy garden work to keep me busy and too tired to worry. Perhaps it's not so bad, it's been rainy, T's had flu and we are lagging back a little.

Sakina: Ficcares are wonderful, quality clips and they have amazing holding capacity. I think you definitely should try one! But be warned- it may well be the beginning of another hairtoy addiction! If you don't want to buy blind, I think at least some Nordstroms carry a limited selection. I have bought from the website, and have been happy with the service.
I think a large Maximas or a large Ficcarissimo would be best for a first clip (the mechanism in both is similar- all depends on which style pleases your eye, though Maximas is said to be a bit more versatile since it's asymmetric and looks good in any angle). Both accommodate a lot of hair and work with several styles. Keep me posted!

Hair: Drying right now after an unscheduled shower I had to take because I got this urge to work on veggie patch and all the work left to do there is carrying stones (I used small round stones to line flower/herb beds- looked very pretty, but the stones had to be taken away before turning the soil) and turning the soil. I think I will ask T to do my monthly trim once it's dried. I haven't measured but I believe I got good growth this month. After last trim my hair was barely hitting the upper edge of the waistband of my apron, now the ends are halfway which is about an inch. The idea of trimming feels painful unlike it has done previously- I want to be done and back in the business of growing my hair so badly. But, I know I'm not done yet. Come, New Year!

Crafts: T's sweater is progressing by leaps- I think I'm going to finish the back piece tomorrow, and it's not like I'm dedicating all my time for knitting. It feels strange to knit something so quick and simple after the intricate shawl (and let's not forget the even more intricate wedding record...) I think there will be some yarn left over from this project- T is a small man and his sweater requires way less yarn than mine would. I think I will use the leftovers to knit him a pair of socks, and perhaps a beanie and mittens. Depends on how much leftover yarn there will be.

Didn't have my hair trimmed last night...it just slipped. Will try again tonight. Today's style is a knot bun with red Primavera beak. Braided bun makes braid waves, and those would make trimming more difficult for T.
I still dislike the idea of trimming, no matter how sensible it is. After the trim, my hair barely hits the waist, while now I'm at clear, generous, obvious, indisputable waist length. Come, New Year!

Crafts: A couple of pictures of the wedding record I finished a couple of posts ago. Because I'm so proud I managed to complete it without too many mistakes.
