Starting from Scratch - .5 inches
Feb 22nd, 2007 at 1:39pm

I just cut my beloved dreadlocks off and have decided to allow my hair to grow naturally (and not locked) so I need plenty of help in keeping my hair healthy and happy.  I am glad to be surrounded by women who obviously know what they are talking about as evidenced by the beautiful healthy hair I see here!

A fresh start!  You won't have to deal with the damaged ends that so many of us have from subjecting our hair to many damaging practices.

Welcome and I hope we can help you grow out your hair to be extra lovely.

Thank you all for the kind wishes and Angel for the compliment.  I hope to learn a lot here and more importantly learn patience in this process.  Rainbow - you do have a head start on me, but not by a whole lot.  Have you thought about what styles you might transition into while it is still layered and short or are you just going to let it grow and leave it alone?  I have an additional issue - I am soon going back into the air force so I can not let it pass my collar - so I either have to keep cutting the bottom layers until the top/sides are long enough to put back in a bun/ponytail OR look a little funny with the bottom layers in a ponytail while the top sides are sticking out.  I would appreciate your plans and thoughts (or anyone else's who has gone from ultra short to long) about what to do and how to do it.

hehe You're welcome.  Wink

Were it me, I would probably keep trimming until my hair was all at one length. This should look the least awkward and would probably be best while you have to keep your hair above collar level. When your hair is all one length, you should be able to pull it back or pin it up.

I definitely think keeping it trimmed maybe at chin length will be good until most of the layers are out.  Here is a picture I took on Feb 1, 2007 the day I cut my dreadlocks off.  Oh, so sad it is.

Your hair looks great!! A new start is your hair best friend!! At this length things are really easy!!

Personally i am just going to let mine grow with a trim of about 1.5 inches per year to keep it healthier than ever
