Itchy scalp :(
Apr 24th, 2007 at 6:24pm

Hi everyone
For quite a while now ive had a really itchy scalp, its driving me nuts now!  And I know you shouldnt scratch.  I dont have a flakey scalp, and I use a mild shampoo (which is diluted) everyother day, as my hair gets very greasy.
Any advice or tips you can give me will be very gratefully received
Thanks
Kirsty

Hi Kirsty,
Sometimes residual shampoo or conditioner left on the scalp or hair can make you itch.  Are you rinsing all the shampoo and/or conditioner out?  Rinse until the water is clear and see if that helps.  Is it a new shampoo that you are using?  Maybe that is making you have an itchy scalp.  you could try a  chamomile rinse or shampoo with chamomile in it to see if that stops the itching.  Chamomile is very soothing and calming.  Hope that helps! A vinegar rinse might also help remove residual product from your scalp.

Does the rest of your skin itch?  You may be lacking internal oil, like Flax, Evening Primrose, Borage or Fish oils.

Also, you may want to oil your scalp (w/ jojoba, coconut, olive) and leave it on for 30 minutes before you wash or even overnight.

Sometimes skin just needs oil, not water.

Thanks for the replies!

Curlgirl64 - I think I am washing my shampoo and conditioners out properly, but I will make sure the water is running clear like you suggested.  I havent changed my shampoo lately, but I will look out for a shampoo with camomile in it today.

Bikerbraid - How do I do a vinegar rinse? Is there a particular type of vinegar I should use?

Sakina - No, its just my scalp that is itching Sad .  I take flaxseed oil capsules every day, and I eat a lot of oily fish.  I used to oil my scalp frequently with jojoba, but its very expensive where I live.  If its ok to use olive oil then I will try that.

Thanks again for the advice  Smiley

Olive oil is one of the best oils for your skin, hair and body in general!  Just a few drops in the palms of your hairs, rub together and then apply to your ends.  Too much will leave you with oily hair Tongue

One way to do a vinegar rinse is to add about 1/4 cup of vinegar to 1/2 gal or a 2 liter bottle of warm water.  Any type of vinegar will work, many prefer apple cider vinegar, but I use white vinegar when I run out of acv.  After shampooing and rinsing, carefully pour the mix over your head and hair - DO NOT GET THIS IN YOUR EYES! Then condition as usual.

The vinegar will help remove product build up and leave your hair soft and shiny.  You can adjust the proportions to what works for you.

I love using olive oil!  For my skin I make a scrub my mixing one part sea salt, one part brown suger and adding EVOO to moisten then I add rose oil to the mix.  I massage this on my skin in the shower, a little goes a long way and I do not use it on my face.  My dry skin LOVES this!

Hi, Kristy...er, xKristyx....whichever you prefer.  Wink

The long-haired ladies here have already made pretty good suggestions, so the only thing I can think to add would be to change your shampoo. Your current one may be irritating your scalp or drying it out.

Hope you find a solution soon. Good luck.  Smiley

how do you keep your hair?  If you are pulling it too tight when you style it you could be making your scalp itch, especially if your scalp is not flakey, which means it seems to be moisturized but something is irritating your scalp.  Also what type of brush do you use?  I would try brushing through your hair with a nice wooden pinned brush (after combing the knots out) wooden pins can be like a massage for your scalp!  also one more thing to  put in your hair!  if the oils dont work, perhaps try Shea Butter on your scalp as a deep condition.  Shea butter is known for helping retian moisture and also protecting against weather damage and dryness.
