If you could choose your natural color....
Jul 7th, 2007 at 3:00am

If you could have been given the choice of what color your hair would naturally grow, what would you pick? Would you be light? Dark? Somewhere in between? Something completely unnatural?

If I could have chosen, I would have had Lily Munster-esque hair... long and black with white streaks.

I would have liked to have black hair.  My parents and brother have it along with brown eyes.  I got the brown haur with blue eyes.  I have dyed it black in the past and even got brown color contacts to see if I liked it.  I like the blue eyes with black hair better. Roll Eyes

I had that, except mine was dark brown with white streaks off my temples.  That looks distinguished on a man with short hair.  On my long hair it looked like the Bride of Frankenstein after she got caught in a rainstorm.  If I put it up I looked like Queen Amidala, and I don't mean that in a good way.  The streaks gradually widened until I had a dark stripe off my widow's peak, sort of like a reverse skunk.  Thank goodness the stripe has faded and will be gone completely in a few years.

I don't know how Lily did it.  On her it looked good.  Maybe because her hair was black, and her streaks weren't off her temples.

Anyway, my choice would be deep auburn.  I've always wanted to be a creamy skinned, curly haired, green-eyed redhead instead of an olive-skinned, straight haired, hazel eyed brunette.

If I could have any color I wanted, I would go for hair the color of Holly Marie Combs (which is a similar color to you Lisabella).  I have always loved that nice rich brown hair, but alas, my skin is so pale being blonde, that I would look like a ghost if I did that.  My siblings are (sorry, were) both that lovely brown.

Black hair and blue eyes.  That is a striking combination.  Makes me think of some Irish people.  Now my thoughts float to Pierce Brosnan (yum) even if he is a dark brown, not black. Ya, I know, he has short hair...but yum.  Yum...ok enough of that.

On the note of black hair...and very far removed from Pierce...my dad had black hair.  I have only seen hair like his on a couple of people in my life.  It was soooo black and soooo shiney that when the light caught it, it had a blue glint to it.  I don't mean like the blue people color their hair these days...I mean...moonlight blue if you know what I mean.

My mother and my father both have beatiful white hair now.  Sadly, mine is a steel grey under the color job.  My siblings have the steel color too.  My hairdresser tells me that as I age, mine will probably go that beautiful white too.  I hope so....but am in no rush to find out!!

well, I'm a natural dark brown myself... with blue-green-grey-ocean-in-a-storm eyes. It's annoying because nobody believes me when I tell them I'm roughly 75% irish. "but... aren't irish people redheaded?"

I've always loved the blue eyes black hair too, but my eyes weren't blue enough to pull it off.. I looked like I'd gone greyscale.

If I could have been born with any colour hair in the world...I'd choose black, of course!!
I have coveted long, lush raven waves from a very early age. I suppose straight black hair would be ok too, but I might like a little wave in there to keep things interesting.

Alas, I was born with...well now, this is funny. I was actually born with very dark brown (almost black) hair like my father's. But within the first year of my life, it faded to the light, fawnish brown that it is today. My mother said that it's very common for babies' hair colour to lighten up quickly like that. But oh, I would've been so much happier if I could have retained the colour that I was born with!

Also, I love and covet the dark hair/pale skin/blue eyes combination. I wish that was my colouring! But I have the same blue-green-gray "ocean in a storm" eye colour as Kiraela, so my eyes wouldn't "pop" under black hair.
Of course, I have dyed my hair black many times and it never looked the least bit natural with the rest of my colouring. God made me a red Celt, not a black one. Why fight it?

Well, for the first 40-odd years of life, I was a natural blond.  Then with the cancer/chemo thing, God decided I should be a natural brunette.  (He's got such an odd sense of humor!  Grin  )  But I have to say...if I could choose, I'd be a redhead.  Not a carrot top, but that lovely, rich dark shade of red.

Trisha,

I am so sorry for your trials, and I hope they never come back.  I salute your strenght to go on and survive.  I wanted to donate my hair once it was long for women who lost their hair due to chemo.  Sadly, I am not eligible...as my hair is grey and processed...

Hair basically has 4 colors in my opinion...red, brown, blonde and black...yes many different shades but only 4 colors.  I find it interesting that you have had 2 colors...yet still wish to be another...I think this exemplifies...the grass is always greener...

My hair was white blonde as a youngster then transitioned to honey blonde.  It has now darkened to a dark blonde/light brown.  I loved my hair when it was light blonde, but strawberry blonde color would also have been fantastic.

Er, no offense, Jdog, but that's a bit generic, eh? What about gray or white? Or salt and pepper, which is black, white and everything in between? Or auburn, which is brown and red together? Or dirty blonde, which often has both blonde and brunette properties? The pigments in your hair are either going to be red, gold, black or nonexistent...but the way they are arranged is unique to you.
The stronger hues are chemically and genetically predetermined, which is why the tint or colour can change over time. But no matter what your colour combination and no matter what your tone, no one else has your exact patterns. Your hair colour is as individual as your fingerprint...that makes for a veritable rainbow of coloured heads.  Grin

If I could choose my hair color,  I would like it to be a very dark brown with red shades to it.  I think perhaps my eye color wuld be emerald green.  Creamy complexion (no freckles).  There, that about sez it all  Wink.  Oh yeah I forgot I also would like to be 5'6" tall, and weigh about 145lbs.

Well Angel, as I said there are different shades of the 4 basic colors...which you have argued well for me.  Yes, there is gray, which I had not considered.  I was thinking more along the lines of the colors that exist before we lose color pigment in our hair and become gray/white (which can also be different shades).  I was not saying that we blondes are all the same shade of blonde or that we can't have some red highlights in it naturally or that you can't see a burnette who is going gray giving rise to the salt and pepper affect.  Of course everyone's hair is unique, but I still argue that there are 4 basic colors and then you have gray due to loss of pigmentation.

To add a little bit of science to the conversation all hair color is the result of the pigment located with the hair's cortex, which is called melanin. There are two types of melanin: Eumelanin which provides brown and black color and Pheomelanin which provides red and ginger to yellow/blonde tones. All natural hair color is a ratio of these two types of melanin. Grey hair is the loss of melanin in the hair and isn't actually grey it is white, but most hair does not lose all of its melanin giving it a grey apperance because of the white mixed with the melanin that is still left in the hair strand.  Oh and I would keep my natural color, that nice firey Irish red color, but I would like it better if it was not so thick

Hmm.. I wonder if there's anything I can do, short of dye or giving myself a case of malnutrition, to encourage loss of pigment( IE getting white hairs) ...

yes, a 19 year old asking for tips on how to GET grey hair.  Shocked*points out that I never said I was normal*

Honestly, I hope I got the family gene for going grey unnaturally early. My aunt was fully grey by the time my brother was born, so she would have been roughly 30 then. My grandmother was also grey very early, and mom found her first greys around the time steve was born... around 27 or so. She's still got salt and pepper... but it's good cajun red pepper, I guess... Actually she matches a red roan horse I knew, back when I used to take riding lessons...  ( well, back then she matched the horse I usually rode, a chestnut mare, perfectly.. but... time marches on)

Oddly enough, she doesn't appreciate that compliment... I guess not everyone enjoys having their appearance compared to that of a horse, even if it is a very pretty, elegant, and well bred horse. *sigh*

K,

Be careful what you wish for.  I started going gray when I was 20, and was completely gray by 30.  Now I spend a fortune coloring it professionally.  Gray hair is nice...but there is lots of time for that latter in life.  Enjoy having the beautiful color you have while you have it.

I suppose you have a point, JDog.. I guess I should enjoy the nice color that's growing in for a while, before I even think about wishing it away. Although I am going to have to start covering it with a hat or scarf when I go outside at night... the dark brown is so shiny that june bugs think it's a light source and attack my head. Kiraela does NOT like june bugs.
Viscious, pretentious little things. yes, pretentious. they waltz in your house as if they belong there.. as if they're saying "hello, the june bugs are here.. where's our cup of tea?" not to mention they're pretending to be wasps, what with all that buzzing and such. *snort* uppity little things.

I think I'd choose my current color, which is sort of medium blonde (looks very different depending on light source).
I have always liked my haircolor. Smiley Some gray/white might be nice though...

i have naturally dark hair. however, im lucky. i have 4 differnent colors in my hair. red from my dad(he had brown hair w/red highlights) blond from my mother(natural blond) black from my grandmother. and brown from all sides. im pretty content with this color scheme and wouldnt mind having it again.

if i were to have chosen a different natural color i suppose i would choose mariah carey's hair color back in 1990. i liked that brown color. i like all her colors actually.

red hair. i like it on other people just not myself. i dont mind the highlights but i dont think with my skin tone and eye color i could pull it off with just red hair. i would clash lol.

oh yes, i just remembered, i would also choose holly marie combs for her hair style. i love the color and the sheek look. her length is amazing and it suits her well.

well i guess that all i have to say. this was fun. Smiley

The grass is always greener...

I have an obsession with natural hair colors  especially every color except my own.  My biggest obsession is every shade of natural red hair.  I would've loved to have been a natural bright copper/carrot top but that would require a different complexion and eye color too.  I wish I looked like Siobhan Donaghy.

My husband's blond locks and the change of shades all depending of the time of the year and how sunny the summer, is really fascinating to me.  My hair just doesn't go through those dramatic changes.  He turns 40 this summer and maybe his hair is actually mostly grey now but it's just not as visible as it is in darker hair.  I'm kind of envious of the change from blond/blonde to whitish "grey" some people go through almost unnoticably.

When I was really little my hair was white blonde...then is started getting darker. I really, really wish I had blonde hair again. Now it's a kinda dingy, brown color. I so wish I had  a nice, shiny pretty blonde!!!

Some brunettes can be quite beautiful, but mine is just kinda blah.

I would also appreciate black hair. Just a nice shock of pure black would be lovely!!(if it didn't make me look like a ghost!)

My hair was golden blonde when I was little, but has darkened.  I think I would like it to  be just a bit darker, since I have VERY pale skin (about as pale as most redheads, except I have darkish brown hair).  When my hair is wet it is very striking.

Both my parents have dark hair and green-grey eyes but mine are a funny shade of hazel that look like gold unless I have been crying or you are about 4 inches away from my face.

If I could pick any coloring in the world, I would go with rich, chocolate brown hair and creamy skin, like so many other people here! I think that Liv Tyler, especially in The Lord of the Rings, has the most beautiful hair and skin.
I'm very pale, but my skin has a yellow undertone to it, which is quite annoying because so many fun colors make me look jaundice. I have always loved my sister's long, wavy, brown hair, and she looks so sophisticated when she dresses up. I look like a firecracker just waiting to go off, which I'm really not. People assume I'm this crazy, unpredictable girl because of my red hair, and I'm really not. I'm pretty bookish and organized.  Wink

I could go with a couple different colors. I really like they blonde hair I had when I was really little, but I find myself loving the rich dark browns. Like Demi, Liv, etc... It's a wonder I don't have red hair (my hair tends to pull red hues whenever I have it colored), and green eyes cause my ancestors are Irish, Scottish, and Welsh!

If I could choose my natural color, it would be the same color that I had when I was a little girl.  It was a really light reddish brown color with natural dark blonde highlights.  I absolutely hated it when I was a kid and wanted darker hair.  Now, my hair is darker but now I'd love to have it light again. I would've wanted, and sometimes still yearn for, jet black, long, and curly. My mother's father had jet black hair with blue eyes, I think it would look even more sensational with my green eyes. My father had white blonde curly hair into his early 20's then it darkened to an ash blonde. Sadly, however, I never inherited his curls. My mother's was a mousey brown, as she called it, she's gray now, so I suppose honey blonde puts me inbetween the two. But yes black and curly. I have a severe weakness, like some others, for black-dark brown hair with blue eyes  Wink I like blonde hair and blue eyes but the contrast between dark hair and light eyes... *shivers*

Forget color!  I wish I could choose a different texture.  It's hot and humid today and I absolutely hate my thick, straight, black hair!  Even though it's sparse relative to other hairtypes, it's still unbearably hot and sweaty!  I want fine, curly/wavy, blonde hair!

The grass is always greener..... but I imagine that it would be so much more comfortable on days like these Roll Eyes

I'm glad I'm absolutely broke because the way I feel right now, a seriously layered and permed style seems like a really good way to get some air to my scalp and the drying would keep my hair from looking so greasy.

I really actually adore my hair color but wish it were more vivid and you could see all the diffrent faucets in it.My hair is a dark chocolate brown with auburn streaks in it(natural) and I have this blonde spot near the front of my bangs. It's got a ridiculous amount of body to it and poofyness but that's the charm to it.When I was a young girl my hair was white blonde and super curly until I turned 9 and it turned "dishwater blonde"I always loathed that term.It made me feel like my hair wasn't pretty.Cry

It was down to my waist almost back when it was that blonde color and then I decieded to cut it to my chin because I was sick of it being"dishwater".Bad choice,eh?It grew out this mousy brown color and when I turned 12(my birthday actually) my mum let me dye it Burgandy red.It was super pretty(or I thought so anyway.in all reality it was pretty awful)Since then I've dyed it dark brown and several shades of red.I never thought to dye it blonde though...I guess I never wanted to be "Dishwater"again.

I'm now nearly 16 and proud to say that my hair is 15 inches long and a beautiful healthy color and condition.I haven't dyed it since December and I don't plan on dying it anytime soon. Smiley

So now my goal is to by this next New Year to have my hair be 18 inches or so.I think I may make it...if not I am reaching for the sky.
My longer term goal is to have it at 25 inches.Which is mid-back/upper low back.

Thanks for listening to me ramble about my childhood.

I wish I could say I'd tried having different hair colors occur naturally.  Sadly, I think my hair's always been raven and I'm beginning to accept hat nature probably knows what "she's" doing.

Hmm...I'm not really sure. I would probably just keep it the same as it is naturally-kind of ash blond with natural highlights.  Smiley it would also be kind of nice to have long, red hair. Of course, my hair is neither. Undecided

-Oh! by the way, this is my first post/reply (i'm not really sure what to call it) so I'd just like to say hi to everyone! Cheesy
