Rolls
Aug 23rd, 2007 at 9:39pm

I have tried several times to make rolls with my hair to no avail.  I'm thinking rolls like the edwardian, or the opposite of that where the hair is twisted towards the back of the head.  My hair never holds the shape long enough to get into a braid or bun at the base of my head.  Any ideas or suggestions?  Some special trick that I'm missing?

Can you be more specific?  How are you making your rolls?  Are we talking sausage rolls or gibson girl hairstyle?

I need more information!!

Gibson girl style, but not doing the hair flip.  As a kid I had a great book by the Klutz makers that had pictures and instructions, 'Hair: A Book of Braiding and Styles/Book and 3 Scrunchies,' but of course I can't find it now to give a better idea of what I mean.

If you go to this site: http://imaginary-styles.iwarp.com/ and go to Star Wars episode 2, and the fireplace style, that is the roll that I am trying for, and then end in a braid as in the picture or a bun, etc.

The instructions that I remember had you gathering a section at the temple, twisting it towards the back of your head, then adding another section and twisting it into the first on down to the base where you tied off and repeated on the other side.  You could also twist towards your face to get a more braided type look.

When I try my hair just sags, or doesn't end up with any roll shape to it.  Maybe I've forgotten a key element in there?   Huh

Ok, here's what I think, based on the picutures in the Fireplace pictures.  You take some hair from the front equally on both sides and begin to twist to the back.  Keeping even tension is key and most likely need an extra pair of hands.  If no extra hands are available, try twisting one side and clipping then do the second side.  From here you could use a hair band to secure all the hair at the nape of the neck, making it pretty tight so the twists don't come undone.  Alternative is to take a couple of bobbie pins on each twist at the back of your head, open them up and pin up in the twist at the scalp (so the ends of the pin are facing your face, not your back)  Then, divide the newly created pony tail into 3 sections to braid.  Then, either leave the braid down as is or twist it into a bun at the nape.  Another thought-twist the sides as I've said and after you make the ponytail, flip it like a topsy tail before braiding.  I think that would help the side twists stay put.

I think they used fake hair as the accent twist around the braid and that it is attached under the beginning of the braid.

I do not think they added in hair to make the twists, I think there were 3 parts to start-one section from each temple and the rest of the hair hangs down in back until the twists come to the nape.

You could use fake hair to cover the hair band, or use other hair accessories like flowers, ribbons, string of pearls, etc.

Sorry I don't understand-are you talking about 2 different styles here?  A Gibson girl and Queen Amidala?  I have that book you mentioned, its very helpful.

I hope I've been some help-I still don't feel sure I've answered your question.

Thanks Sakina--that was helpful.  I'm working at pulling them tighter and having more success.  I think I was expecting the rolls to be a bit more pronounced in the back then they are turning out, which is probably just my hair.  But it does give a softer look updo's that I really like.
