It's wonderful to see other people who like Loreena McKennitt's music as well as I do.  Kiraela, I don't have every one released, but I'm working on it!

My musical tastes are quite varied, ranging from New Age, to Classical (minus most opera), classic rock, alternative, country (mostly the modern stuff), hard rock (but not the kind you can't really tell if it's music or just screaming), goth (is that what groups like Inkubus Sukkubus are lumped under?), a *teeny-tiny* bit of rap (do Kid Rock and Eminem count?), I lose track sometimes.

Has anyone here every listened to anything by the group Bond?  I love their music!

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for other groups with a similar sound/style like that of Lacuna Coil or Evanescence?  I've seen albums that *look* like they might, but with store return policies being what they are for CDs, I hesitate to buy anything new without knowing if I already like it.

If you like Lacuna Coil and Evanescence you might like Echoes Of Eternity, Otep (they are kind of on the heavy side though), In This Moment and Nightwish.

If you go to amazon.com you can listen to samples of most songs to see if you like something or not.

Jerry

I forgot to include Within Temptation but in my opinion they are kind of on the heavier side but not as heavy as Otep Cool

And, I could include Therion but the female vocals are more opera/symphony style but I really love the mixture of heavy metal and opera/symphony.  If you have not heard of Therion my favorite albums by them are Sirius B and Lemuria and An Arrow From The Sun is my favorite Therion song Cool

I just realized something today, having a boyfriend whose passion is music, who knows people who own studios, who knows some of the coolest industrial musicians.... can sometimes rock. Especially when He also knows how to make the home music center, have the same quality of a recording studio : AKA sitting here, with Lacuna coil playing, with studio grade speakers and subwoofers, turned up HIGH... it's like being at a concert, except without all the sweaty unwashed pervs and mosh pits.

Finally!!  I have a chance to reply and thank everyone for their suggestions.  I've already found quite a few albums I just *need* to get!

Renchick: If you're open to some indy sorts of things, where you'd have to buy the music directly from the artist... and you don't have a problem with myspace(i know a bunch of people who think it's the devil) I can list off a couple you might like. HEH. actually it'd be easier to give you a link to my myspace friends list... it's almost all bands, and almost everything that isn't harp, is female fronted metal/rock..

I do have a problem with myspace, unfortunately.  I'm very paranoid in this computer age of personal information out where anyone can get to it.  I guess it's because I'm a very private person and don't give my trust easily.  I'll play around with it and see if I can create an account that doesn't require alot of info.  In which case I'll be more than happy to get a link to your myspace friends.  I've been thinking quite a bit lately about delving into the indy music sphere.

I did check out these groups on Amazon.  Unfortunately, Echoes of Eternity did not have any previews available that I could find. Sad  Otep I did find some for, you're right they are on the heavy side, but I did like them.  I couldn't find any previews for In This Moment either.  Sad  Now, Nightwish I did like!  Some of it reminded me of the elements I really like in the Metallica S&M album.

I listen most: Nightwish, Rammstein, Within Temptation, my newest great discovery Turisas, Rhapsody (of Fire, they had to change their name for some legal issues).  I guess I should also mention Alice Cooper and Manowar.

I also like more peaceful music like Era and Adiemus, movie soundtracks (recently I've listened Lady in the Water soundtrack a lot), and then there are some odd bands, especially Finnish, that I just like for some inexplicable reason...like Pohjannaula that has this fantastic shamanic folk rock music...and Viikate.

Modified: RenChick, somewhere in my journal (Galadriel's Mirror Shows Many Things) is a written introduction to Nightwish. Read and do as instructed!  Wink

Thanks so much for the suggestions Galadriel.  I found your list and will definitely follow it.  I also checked out a couple of the other bands you mentioned, and they sound like ones I will enjoy as well.  I already have a couple of albums by Rammstein that I enjoy listening to.

You mentioned the more peaceful music.  Have you heard any music by Magna Canta or Enigma?  They have sounds very similar to the two you mentioned and I quite enjoy them.

Is there someplace to check out the music by the last two you mentoned - Viikate and Pohjannaula?  I tried finding them on Amazon but no luck.  I'll try searching a little harder tonight with Google and such, but I'll accept any help!

Therion sounds great!  I definitely have to get some by them!

And after hearing some samples of BWO, I think I'll add them to my shopping list.  Cheesy

I join the Loreena McKennitt-fans, she's amazing! The first song I heard with her, the Bonny Swans, made me go  Shocked, lol. I also listen a lot to Enya, Queen and different soundtracks that gets stuck in my head like Corpse Bride etc.  Smiley Buuut right now, I'm listening to Joan Baez "Sweet Sir Galahad", trust me to like a song with a title that involves a knight.  Wink

I like Enya, I really really like Queen and I like soundtracks because they are like compilations which usually have a good variety of songs on them.

But I mainly like soundtracks which have heavy metal on them such as the first and second Resident Evil soundtracks.

RenChick I have one album from Enigma, but I haven't heard of Magna Charta. I'll check it out!

Viikate and Pohjannaula will probably be very difficult to find. They are small Finnish bands that make their music in Finnish and I don't think they are in international distribution at all. I'd be happy to send you some samples though- PM if you are interested.

Right now I'm listening to NW's newest, Dark Passion Play. I think it will be released in US tomorrow (something like that).

Yes, Nightwishes Dark Passion Play was released Oct. 2nd. in the U.S. and I either want the Collectors Edition or the special box set and all I could find at our local stores was the regular edition.

So, I will probably get it on the internet hopefully soon.

I have not been listening to as much music as I usually do but I did buy the newest White Stripes cd Icky Thump (which is playing as I type this).

It is pretty good and so far I like the title song, Conquest (my favorite on the cd), Little Cream Soda and Bag And Bone.

I also bought three of Opeth's CD's but they belong in the heavy metal thread Roll Eyes

When I am not in a metal mood (which is not very often) I do like mellow music such as Barry Manilow and Tom Jones.

Well, I bought my first Frank Sinatra CD yesterday called Sinatra Reprise:  The Very Good Years.  I am listening to it right now.

My favorite of his is Theme From New York, New York Cool  I also like Luck Be A Lady, The Best Is yet To Come, Love And Marriage (most people who watched the tv show Married...With Children know this song), I've Got You Under My Skin, Strangers In The Night and My Way Cool

Not only do I like his singing but the music is pretty good also Cool

And, I did not know this until recently but Jim Morrison from The Doors said his idol was Frank Sinatra and he actually wanted to sing like him and he was inspired by crooners such as Frank Sinatra Shocked

I have that Reprise CD - it's one of my favorites.  There is another compilation CD of Sinatra's work - Songs for Swingers and Songs for Lovers.  I think that's it - I can't find mine right now.   Embarrassed

I am usually a metal person.  Zombie (Rob or White), Megadeth, local band Super Sternal Notch and some of a Christian band Red - they do the "Breathe into Me" song that is played on rock radio out here.

I have a pretty wide range when it comes to music.
Also in my collection:
The irish rovers library - irish folk music mixed with a little pop
country - The older singers - not so much the groups
Some dance (I guess) - Pink I"m Not Dead is one of my favorites

And lots of soundtracks!  The Practical Magic one is in the top 3.
