Hair protection at night
Oct 7th, 2007 at 6:12pm

Hello!

I know this question has been raised before, but I just had a couple more.

I find that my hair tends to dry out alot at night, and was wondering if there are any tips.

I usually try to braid my hair before bed, but since it's multiple different lengths it's hard to keep it all in.

I've been messages about a sort of hair 'sock' that someone makes, how do I get my hands on one?

As well, is there a type of moisturizer for my hair I should be putting in it nightly?  I am trying to grow out some bleach damage (blond streaks I never should have gotten... Happy; )

Being new, I'm not too sure what suggestions I've read from the boards would work on my hair.  It's fairly long (a couple feet I think) and pretty thick... the hair itself being sort of medium, with about 5-6 inches of good hair before the dye.  I try to deep condition at least twice a week, and shampoo every 2nd or 3rd day.... but I find the top of my hair gets oily, while the bottom stays pretty dry.

Any suggestions?

Cheers! Smiley

My first suggestion would be to check your sheets! Certain materials, like flannel  Shocked , can be extremely drying to hair. Invest in a pair (or several) of satin pillowcases if you haven't already done so. Having gone from flannel to satin bedding myself, I can tell you that there is a world of difference!

If this isn't an option, invest in a satin sleeping cap (worn with the satiny side on your hair, of course). Although, I can tell you from personal experience that getting used to these things takes some practice.  Undecided  If you are planning to oil your hair overnight, they are absolutely essential so that the oil from your hair doesn't get transferred to your pillowcase and thus onto your skin!

You might try braiding your hair at night if your hair can handle it. Mine can't, so I just leave it loose.

HTH even a little bit. Good luck.  Smiley

Curlgirl makes the satin sox - I'm sure she will chime in her later.  Lacking a satin sock, you could use any clean sock.  Start by braiding your hair, then put the end of the braid into the sock and secure with an elastic at the nape.

There are several kinds of oils you can use.  My personal favorite is jojoba oil.  Some use olive oil.  You don't need to use very much oil - you don't want the hair to look wet.  Just a drop or two - depending on your length.  Apply it to just the length of your hair - below the ears.  Braid your hair and put it in your sock.  Sleep on a satin pillow case, and your nighttime hair damage will be minimized.

I have no proof if this is true, but for the same as flannel, cotton in general will absorb the moisture from your hair as well as tangle it when you sleep, so I would suggest def. getting satin/silk pillow cases.  I am currently trying to make the switch myself.  Good luck with your hairs!

Well, I tried the sock on hair thing last night.... will definately take some getting used to LOL I kept feeling like it was falling off, but it hadn't moved when I got up in the morning.

I also tried oiling my hair... used wheatgrass oil (since the store was sold out of jojoba oil), and it actually turned out pretty nice. There wasn't much oil left over in the morning to rinse out, and my hair feels so soft and is shiny.

So.... I battle on LOL to bannish the nighttime frizzies.

wheatgrass oil?  hmmmm....Did you feel as though you could put the wheatgrass oil in for a leav in oil that would not need to be washed out?  was it heavy on your hairs?

I've not heard of using wheatgrass oil on hair - but, hey - if it works - go for it!

Tara - it wasn't heavy at all Smiley it was really nice, and easy to put in.
I don't know if you would be able to leave it in and not wash it out... maybe Smiley there wasn't much there to wash out when I rinsed this morning, and my hair didn't feel oily before I rinsed.  Maybe it depends on how much you put in.

Bikerbraid - I hadn't heard of it either, until the guy at the health store told me about it, apparently it's popular here (along with jojoba and coconut oil).
