Help! my daughter's wedding
Dec 14th, 2007 at 12:23pm

Hello, I'm a 60 yr old woman who has always worn my hair one way only-- long and with bangs.  Guess it's a holdover from my hippie days, but i've been fine with it.

this summer I started losing my hair!  Don't know when and if it's going to stop and I'm very sad about it, but I'm exploring medical reasons and what will be will be, I guess.

My daughter is getting married this summer and I've already been told about her expectations for my appearance (which also tends to be old hippie).  I'll do the very best I can to meet her expectations BUT she is saying she wants me to go to a hairdresser for a fancy do.  I'm really afraid to have anyone messing with my hair-- the slightest tug and it comes out-- but I also can't seem to find any styles online.  Maybe something with braids?

My question is, am I going to be able to find something suitable at a hairdresser? Will it add to the damage to my hair?(All my experiences with hairdressers thru my life have been nightmares, so I know I'm paranoid).

I'm very sad and discouraged about all of this.  Am I going to be able to meet my daughter's expectations without losing even MORE of my hair?

Suggestions very much appreciated.

Hi,

If I were you and based on what you've said, I would stay away from the salon and avoid any sort of hair do that would cause any additional stress or tension such as up do's or braids.

My suggestion would be to perhaps do some pretty curls and maybe a flower or some other hair accessory to dress your hair up a bit but at the same time something that won't be harmful to your hair(i.e. too heavy, or something that could catch or get tangled in your hair).

Good luck!

Hey Michaelannb,

I agree with La Diosa - salons are a bad idea. Hairstylists like to backcomb or "tease" hair for volume and not only is this extremely damaging, it could pull yours out!

Do you have a friend who might be able to style your hair for you? Even a French braid or a half up could look nice. Best of luck.

A braided bun is always classy, and you can accessorize it with flowers or hairsticks.  If you can braid your own hair, I suggest getting some amish hairpins.  They're stainless steel, light weight and hold like glue without pulling on the hair.

I hope you are able to find a solution to your hair troubles and are able to turn around the falling of your hair.  In the meantime, practicing meditation or yoga can help you cope with the stress and help you not lose hair to stress.

You'll find the hairpins near the bottom of this page:

Good Luck, be sure to let us know how it turns out, and maybe post a picture??

A bun with pretty hairsticks is always a nice option.  (That's how I wore my hair for my son's wedding.)  A french braid might also be an option.  I agree with you and everyone else that a hair salon most likely will not know how to handle your hair and may cause significant damage or hair loss.
