Tuesday 16 September 2008
Hair: CWC this morning and my hair is frizzy after it completely dried.  What the...??  I never used to have frizzy hair, even in the dead of winter.   Huh  The frizz is up near my face at the crown, not affecting the length, so I don't want to use oil at that spot.  I may have to try some aloe gel to tame it.

Other:  It was an interesting weekend, not in a good way.  Sunday morning we had a big storm blow through (literally) and our power went off around 9:40.  We didn't have electricity restored until Monday evening, between 6 and 7.   Angry  Thank God we still have several gallon jugs of water left from the big ice storm in February!  And thank God also that the weather was nice and cool, so we didn't swelter with no AC.  I'll tell you what though, there's nothing like going without a shower for a couple of days to make you REALLY appreciate running water!   Grin

Wednesday 17 September 2008
Hair:  No wash day; hair is up in a ponytail.  I figured my second-day hair would not be frizzy (see yesterday's entry), but I had to use a little dab of aloe gel for smoothing.  Still, it worked great.  Maybe I used too much shampoo yesterday...?   Huh

Other:  Get this...hubby won $888 on a scratch-off ticket yesterday.   Shocked  Yes, eight hundred and eighty-eight dollars!!!  It's a Missouri lottery game called Wild 8s and $888 is the maximum amount one can win.  He's always pretty lucky, playing scratch-off tickets, but this is the largest prize he's ever won.  I still can't believe it!  He's traveling to St. Louis today to claim the money (where the lottery headquarters is located).  We've decided to buy two of the items on our "need" list; a chainsaw and a new storm door for the kitchen.  Winning this money also means he'll have some extra money to take with him to Grand Lodge this weekend.  Yay!   Cheesy

Congrats to you & your hubby on the win, Trisha.  Smiley
And thank goodness you're doing something sensible with it!

Several years ago, when my husband at the time won $1,000 at a slot machine, we divided the winnings evenly between the 2 of us. I bought matching leather jackets for the both of us with my half. With his half, he went and put a down payment on a new car!  Shocked  Undecided

Thanks everyone!    Cool  The running joke between hubby and me is that he never wins money when I'm with him.  I always remind him that I'm simply lucky in other areas of my life.   Grin

Hair:
Decided to do another no-wash day; hair is slicked back into a high ponytail.

Other:
My daughter is moving back to the area in two weeks' time--she has a job!!!!    Cheesy
She may need to bunk with us until she can find an apartment but we don't mind.  This means she'll be home in time for her birthday.   Smiley  YAY!!!

The weather here has been so nice and mild that we haven't needed the AC; we've simply enjoyed having the windows open.

I'll be filling in for the secretary this afternoon during the last hour of the work day so I dressed up a bit more than usual.  When I'm the first person that others see, I like to look my best.  So I'm wearing a skirt and low heels (about 1"), mascara and lip gloss.  Oh yes, we are very girly today.   Cool

Oh, and I've stumbled across a "dark" band that I've simply fallen in love with, called MIDNIGHT SYNDICATE.  I've been listening to them on youtube and may actually have to spend some coin on one of their cd's...   Roll Eyes

Thanx, rub it in.  Tongue  Wink  It's still nasty hot here in SoCal. Well, not quite wilt-and-die-on-the-sidewalk hot, but almost. At least the sun has started setting a little earlier.

And congrats to your daughter on the new job & impending move. Change is good.  Smiley

So, you've discovered Midnight Syndicate, eh? Yeah, you knew I knew something about 'em.  Wink  Two of their albums that I recommend as absolute essentials are their Joseph Vargo collaborations: Born Of The Night and Realm Of Shadows.  Cool

I was hoping you would pipe in about Midnight Syndicate.
Cool  Are there any other bands/musicians in that same vein you'd recommend?

Hmm...there aren't too many artists in that "same vein," really. Their mantra is creating dark soundtracks to movies that don't exist.
While many gothic bands use similar elements of haunting, dramatic orchestrations and synth effects, they are usually mixed with vocals, electronic beats and other instruments.

One band who is sometimes listed similarly to Midnight Syndicate is Nox Arcana (probably because of their use of synth effects and collaboration with Joseph Vargo), though I do not recommend them. Their sound is way more synth and way less orchestral...kind of dull and "cheap"-sounding IMO. They don't have the layers of sound or the drama that Midnight Syndicate does.

It depends on what you're into, really. One band that I do kinda like for the atmospheric quality of their songs (especially the instrumentals) is Black Tape For A Blue Girl. A lot of bands do atmospheric music, but...erm, not that well.  Undecided

Hair:
CWC this morning; hair is down.  I was careful not to overdo the shampoo this morning (thus resulting in frizzies).  At least I suspect that's what caused the frizzies.

Other:
Thanks for the suggestion, Angel.  *hugs*  I checked out some selections of Black Tape for a Blue Girl on youtube and I like them.   Cool  I also found a group called Dark Sanctuary that I like.  These sounds stir the closet Goth in me.   Cool

*hugs* No prob, Trish. "Closet goth"...that's cute. hehe And I've only heard one song by Dark Sanctuary  Embarrassed  but it was quite relaxing.

I'm way more on the rock/darkwave side of goth music than the ambient side. Oh, and unless you're already in the mood to shoot yourself in the head, I do recommend staying away from transe music and waveforms.  Grin

I used to regularly go to a club that played trance (same as transe?) music.  It sounds really good after a few drinks. Cheesy

I liked the Dark Santuary songs that I heard on Youtube.  The Midnight Syndicate songs did sound like tracks from a scary movie to me.  I used to have to listen to that everyday at work.  I shared an office with a goth and he always played music like that.  He also loved the soundtrack from Children Of The Corn and played that all of the time too. Smiley

My favorite genre is new age.  Is that the same as ambient?  All these genres have me confused.

Trance. Yes, that's it (even professional typists have the odd typo on occasion  Grin). Dreadful stuff.

While new age and ambient are sometimes synonymous, new age is a bigger genre and can encompass more styles. The best way I can think to define ambient music is background noise. Something you would put on to hear, but not necessarily listen to. It kind of complements a scenario or environment rather than defining it...if that makes sense. It's usually just a collection of simple, atmospheric sounds or melodies to create or complement an overall mood.
