It's ironic ....and frustrating
Jul 11th, 2008 at 10:52am

Yesterday around noon, we had a huge supercell storm pass thru the metro area.  The skies were darker than dark and with that strange green tinge, the winds were blowing hard - knocking trees over by their roots, hail, 4 inches of rain in less than an hour.  Obviously there would be power outages.  I was glad to get home (biking on a VERY SOGGY bike seat) and find we had power and no tree damage.

Along comes 7 pm.  Skies are clear.  It is just starting to get muggy again and we are thinking about closing up the house and running the A/C.  Then comes the all too familiar POP-SNAP!!!!!  The transformer for our neighborhood has blown again.  It does this about once a week.  Angry  But of course THIS time is happens when the repair crews are maxed out.  We won't have power again until MAYBE Sunday.  Grrrrrrr.

I half expected we would have lost power during the storm - that is typical, but NOOOOO we survive the storm, but lose it later.  (Probably because others were turning on their A/C).  And because we lost it late, we were put at the bottom of the list for repair.

So, not only do we have no power for several days, but we also have the lovely experience of have TWO generators plopped in our front yard, running continuously to power the the d*** cable company box that is on the utility pole on the corner of our lot.

Oh well.  We are actually better off than most.  We have our RV with a generator.  This morning we ran a cord from it into the house so we can power the refrig and freezer occasionally.  (We had JUST stocked the refig before the power went out.)  But with the temps going into the mid to upper 90's and dew points in the 70's, we will be sleeping in the basement!

We'll probably help out a few neighbors with the generator as well.  I guess we'd better get our propane tank filled!

So, in other words, a typical summer day in the midwest?  Roll Eyes

That's a totally bummer, BB!

We had a serious monsoon storm last night.  While our power stayed on and just flickered a bit, we lost satelite feed for several hours.  Today the roads are a mess and some are closed from the sand and debris that got washed out.

I hope they can restore your power sooner than Sunday!

Would a shower cap make a good bike seat raincoat?

Sorry to hear about the storm,BB!  Glad everyone is ok though!  Hang in there,Sunday isn't far off!  I know that sounds weird, but last year or 2 years ago there was a power outage in Queens.  People were without power for more than 2 weeks!!! Shocked

I'm back!  We have power!!

We got our power back late Saturday afternoon.  I am so glad to not have those generators running!  We helped out 3 of our neighbors with our generator - so ours was running quite a bit on Friday and Saturday.  We had more storms roll thru Friday night - another really nasty storm with several tornados, but we only had the winds and some rain.  We were worried that there would be more outages that would delay our repairs, but not this time.

Our camping gear sure came in handy!  I have a hand-crank flashlight and a hand-crank lantern that we used a lot.  No batteries to go dead!  Just crank 'er up and you have light.  We also have a hand-crank radio that is great during severe weather.  We have propane lanterns as well, but I hate using them inside if I don't have to.

Sakina - a shower cap is a bit small for my bike seat - however, I do use one over my bike helmet when I have to bike in the rain and I don't like the water running thru the helmet.  I made a rain cover for my seat, but it couldn't handle the downpour.  I guess I need to put the garbage bag back in my bike for occassions like this.

Angel - you are soooo right!  Especially when we get in this weather pattern where we sit on the edge of the jet stream and have the warm and cold fronts colliding over us.

Oh, I know how that goes. I've heard horror stories about the weather in Denver. Plus, when I visited my surrogate family in KS, I got to experience the turbulence firsthand.

And I also know what it's like to go for days without power. While the midwest has its weather, SoCal has fires, which do their fare share of leaving us all in the dark.  Roll Eyes  But, better to be without power than without water, I think.

Glad to hear that everything is up & running now. hehe I bet you feel like turning on all of the radios & TV's in the house while simultaneously running the a/c and microwaving something, eh?  Grin  Oh, and have fun resetting all of the clocks and replacing all of the food that went bad - that's my favorite part.  Roll Eyes

Resetting the clocks is not my favorite task.  I usually just leave them flashing whatever.  Tongue  Drives hubby nuts that I don't fix them.  Hey - I have a watch, I know what time it is.  He refuses to wear a watch - HE can fix the stupid clocks.

Because we had the generator at the house, we did not lose any food, nor did our 3 immediate neighbors, since we let each of them "plug in"  a few times during the outage.  An hour on the generator every  6 - 8 hours is enough to keep the freezer and refrigerator cold enough (if you are careful about how often you open them).  It was nice we had the RV at the house already so that it was so easy to plug in to the generator.

We should have calm weather for a few days.
