Hair
No wash day; hair is parted down the middle with sides held back with combs.  Length is down.  I don't know if I can wait until tomorrow night to wash and set my hair (with the sponge rollers)!  --May just do it tonight.  I didn't want to watch Grissom's last episode of CSI with curlers in my hair, but I doubt he would mind.   Grin

Good grief Granny, it's COLD...  Temperature this morning with wind chill factor was around 6.  --That's a shoe size, not a temperature!!!   Shocked  I'm SO ready for Spring already.

Oh, I found a wonderful forum the other day while doing a search for "Veronica Lake hair".  The search led me to a site called the Fedora Lounge, a place for all things of the Golden Era--the 1920's, 30's and 40's.  Their discussions may extend beyond those years, I don't know.  But my primary interest is the 1940's and there are plenty of topics to keep my peepers busy!!!  In fact I need to ask Drear if she knows about this place.  At least I *think* she's the one who does, um...what is it called?  --Who is into vintage dressing and whatnot.  I'll go check...

I'm taking tomorrow off as a vacation day and the university is closed on Monday for MLKJ day.  So that gives me a 4-day weekend.  WOO hoo!!!   Cool  I may even sleep late tomorrow morning--at least until 5:30 or 6:00!!   Grin

Mon...oops, Tuesday 20 January 2009
Hair
The curlers experiment done on Thursday night turned out tres faboo.  I washed my hair and rolled it on sponge curlers, no conditioner or styling gel.  Tucked my hair into a satin cap and slept on it.  I'll tell you what, unless it's something that one gets used to over time, I don't know HOW those women in the "golden era" slept on curlers all the time.  I kept waking up every time I would roll over or shift my head on the pillow.   Tongue  But, wow, what curls I had the next morning!  Removed the curlers, finger combed my hair a little and pinned back the sides with a clip.  Surprisingly enough, the curls looked great all day long and held their shape.  I thought that they would be gone by day's end without benefit of styling gel, hair spray or anything.  So despite being a bit uncomfortable for sleep, this is definitely something I will try again.  I think next time I will try twisting the strand of hair before rolling it on the curler.

Stepson has been in the Army for an entire week now and, aside from the traditional "I'm ok" phone call, we haven't heard a peep from him.  We're assuming no news is good news.

I bought 3 new blouses over the weekend, the latest addition in my effort to bring my wardrobe into the realm of classic.  Eventually I want to have more blouses and dressy tops than tees and pullover tops.  I abided by my rule that for every new item of clothing I buy, a similar item must go, i.e., a shirt for a shirt.  So I've started another giveaway bag of clothing that will eventually find its way to Good Will.  I even threw away an older top that was stained and had lost its shape.  Why in heaven's name was I still wearing that?!  (--Even if only at home)

I've also been making an effort to wear mascara and lipstick every day...well, at least every work day.  Today's lipstick is Blue Rose by N.Y.C.  The 4 day weekend messed up my walking schedule, however today I'll get back to it.

Did you take a pic of your curls??  When I sleep in rollers, I use a travel neck pillow.  I can't sleep with the rollers otherwise!

Of course I did.........I just have to remember to bring my digicam to work so I can download the photo! Grin  *said as she writes herself a reminder note*

Wash day; still using and loving the Fiorentino soap.  Using TreSemme conditioner on the ends.  Front is parted on the right side as usual and length is down.  My longest hair is now at the top of my bra strap.  But remember that I've decided not to call BSL until my hair reaches the *bottom* of my bra.  So close!   Cool  About another, what?  Two months, three at the most, and I should be there.

Resumed walking on my treadmill yesterday afternoon and it felt really good.   Smiley

Got a catalog in yesterday's mail from Newport News.  *drool*   Tongue

Oooh. Smiley I'd drool too, but they haven't had much worth looking at lately. At least IMO. *shrug*

No wash day; left hair down since it looks pretty good.  I may try the sponge rollers again this weekend.  --Sometime soon, in any case.  Posted a photo in the "show us your locks" section.   Cool

Style
I've come to some conclusions and want to share them here.  I made this a separate entry because, well, it's important to me and it deserves its own space.   Smiley  In a few weeks we'll be coming into some money.  Hubby's disability case has finally been settled and, while it's not a million dollars, it's a goodly size to us.  I had already told him before the settlement decision of my needing new clothes, so I'm sure hubby will let me spend whatever I need.

Now, I want to spend wisely and get some good, classic pieces.  But to that end, I have been thinking very hard this morning about me, about my style, my life, what makes me comfortable and what looks good/bad on me.  For my own notes, here's what I've decided thus far:

The do not's:
1.  I do not look good in a lot of the skirts I own; weed them out.
2.  I do not look good in overly feminine things; no ruffles, no bows, nothing too dainty.
3.  I do not look good in most of the dresses I own; weed them out.
4.  I do not feel comfortable in stockings, pantyhose, knee hi stockings or
    anything else nylon.
5.  I do not feel comfortable in high heels.

The do's:
1.  I do look good in trousers; need to buy more of them.
2.  I do look good in clean cut, classic style blouses; need to buy more.
3.  I do enjoy wearing socks.
4.  I do enjoy wearing loafers and low heeled shoes.

Bottom line...why am I wearing anything in which I'm not totally, completely, 100% comfortable??   Huh

My list so far, of purchases I need to make, includes:
1.  Trousers, at least 5-7 pair
2.  Blouses, at least 5-7 more
3.  Loafers, at least 2 pair
4.  Socks--you can never have too many pair

By the by, my style icon is Katharine Hepburn, who never personally owned a skirt or dress (wow!).

Hair
No wash day.  Length has some waves thanks to night braids.
I must confess something...
I'm having the urge to cut my hair again.   Undecided  Why?  *shrug*
So I guess I'm on the 2-week watch and I'll track the urge to cut on a scale from 1 to 10; 1 being "no way" and 10 being "cut now".  Today I'm at a 9.   Sad
I'm going right now to read my journal entries from last February/March, when I chopped off most of my length.  Honestly, though, I suspect the weather has a lot to do with this feeling.  The cold temperatures seem to have affected me greatly this year and I think I have cabin fever.   Shocked

Don't do it!  Think of yr sponge roller curls, all yr time and effort over the past year!  Wait those two weeks, and then two more; wait until it warms up.  Change something else; try a new hairstyle.  Your hair looks great the way it is, and it'll look even better over the next few months as it grows longer.

What's the longest you ever had yr hair, btw?

Hair
--Still long!   Cheesy  Sorry I haven't made an entry since Monday; our area was one the many hit hard by the ice storm.

Anyway...on Monday I was at a 9 on my hair cutting scale.  Tuesday I was still at a 9 and even picked out the cut I wanted.  By Wednesday I was down to a 5 and yesterday, Thursday, the urge was all but gone.  --A prime example of why we wait at least 2 weeks, people, before chopping it all off.   Wink

I suspect the Fiorentino handsoap I had been using the entire month of January was getting my hair TOO clean.  My hair was beginning to look a little drab, with no sheen or luster.  So yesterday, the first day we were able to make our way into town, I bought a bottle of Pantene Ice Shine to try and also picked up a packet of something called Smooth n' Shine.  It's basically a deep moisturizer.  I figured it would be greasy, but the product actually has the consistency of cold cream.  The directions say to leave the product on for a minute and then rinse.  But I slathered it on my hair from top to bottom and left it on all night.  Washed this morning with the Ice Shine, conditioned with Classic Care.  My hair seems to be perking up already, which only tends to confirm my feelings about the soap.

So no fear, Skyfire, I have regained my sanity and will NOT be cutting.   Cool  The longest I've reached is waist length before I had it cut to shoulder length.  Thanks for your caring words.  *hugs*

Monday night we got hit with another ice storm, the second winter in a row.  We received around 3 inches of solid ice that night, then most of Tuesday we had sleet and freezing rain coming down, THEN Tuesday night it switched to snow.   Tongue  Thankfully, we did not lose power this time, although the counties south of us did--they are still without electricity today.  I hear parts of Kentucky may not regain their power until mid February!   Sad  Those people are in my prayers; I certainly remember being without power for 3 days last year.  I can't imagine going without for 3-4 weeks.  The university was closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but reopened today.  Yours truly, however, is taking a vacation day...if our car can't make it back up the hill to our house (which it won't--it's sitting at the bottom of said hill as I type), then there's no way I'm going to work.

No, honey. That's called soap scum.

Hair
Liking the Patene Ice Shine   Smiley  Length is now 23 1/2".  I've given up on the urge to cut my hair super short.  However, I'm still considering having my length shortened to around shoulder length with lots of layers.  Hmm...   Cool

Other
The area is still struggling to  dig out from underneath 8 inches of crap (4 inches of ice with 4 inches of snow on top).  Most of the city streets are clear...but I don't live in the city.  At least we were finally able to drive our car back up the hill to the garage yesterday.  Hubby brought me to work today.  Gee whiz, do I hate winter.   Tongue

2nd day hair brushed up into a high ponytail.  Still considering the new 'do...so I guess technically I am still on cut watch.   Huh  I don't know; maybe I'm just ready for something new.  We'll see.

Daily temps have been hitting the high 30's and low 40's.  But with nighttime temps plunging back into the 20's, everything refreezes when the sun goes down.  This icy mess is just going to take forever to go'way.   Tongue  Egads, I cannot wait for spring to arrive...

Have been getting letters regularly from stepson; he also telephoned on Sunday evening.  Where he's concerned, I hate to get my hopes up; yet I honestly believe he'll stay the course this time.  He seems determined to make a go of this Army thing.  *fingers crossed*

Hair
Did a wash last night with my Ice Shine, then set my hair on sponge rollers (no conditioner, no lotion or gel).  I gently twisted each section of hair before rolling it, which produced more waviness than actual curls.  My daughter said I was cute wearing my satin sleep cap.   Roll Eyes  I have GOT to get one of those travel pillows Sakina mentioned, to save my neck when I sleep on curlers.
