Summer Fun Hair care
Feb 12th, 2003 at 4:14pm

Does anyone have any tried and true methods for protecting hair from the harmful effects of chlorine?

How about hard water hair care?

We are buying a new house next month that has a pool, hot tub and hard water for the house water supply.  I've never dealt with these conditions on a daily basis and don't want my hair to suffer Cry

We have hard water and I really don't do much differently to my hair other than condition it a little more often.  We bought an apartment so we can't control the water but there are companies that sell water softening systems

The chlorine are you blonde or brunette???

If you are blonde try lemon juice...I'm a brunette  so I rinse my hair with vinegar...If you are a blonde to much chlorine can turn your hair green...

Hope this helps

Using vinegar or lemon juice rinses will work well with the hard water.

Pool chemicals can be very drying.  One options would be to not get your hair wet!  Grin  But, if you are a water bug like me, you will get your hair wet, so protecting it will be important.  When I swam competitively and was in the water everyday, we would shower to wet our hair with "clean" water, then put oil (jojoba works well) or conditioner on our hair, then braid it.  After swimming we would rinse our hair again (and usually did a quick wash with thinned out shampoo) and condition or oil again.  I have found that Aussie Mega is an excellent shampoo for clarifying and removing the pool chemicals from the hair.

Enjoy your summer fun in the water!

You might try wearing a swimming cap! I'm not sure what hard water is? But you can wear a cap and it would be even better if you put on conditioner while you swam, because the body heat you generate will be beneficial to your hair.

Great advice, gals.   Thanks.

Ginny,  I am a brunette so I will try the vinegar.

Leia,  I don't think my hair will fit in a swim cap properly  Undecided   Hard water is just well water the hasn't been through the purification processes that city municipalities use.

Robin,  Where would I find the proper Jojoba oil to use?

Jojoba oil can be found in health food stores and many vitamin shops.  Be sure it is 100% jojoba oil and does not have any other ingrediants.  Some people add a drop of fragrance oil with their jojoba oil.  The oil can be rather expensive, but you use very little of it at a time.  If you want to try something less expensive, coconut oil is used by many as well.

Actually  - the line of products I use for my hair makes a special shampoo that is for when you have hard water or are in chlorine a lot - I used it when I went to FL and was swimming basically everyday and my hair stayed in great shape (and didn't go green as I'm blonde).  The product line is Ouidad and can be found at www.ouidad.com ; While the product line is geared for curly haired folks, everyone can use them and benefit from them - I especially highly recommend the deep treatment for deep conditioning of hair if you've got hard water or have been swimming a lot - it's excellent and keeps my hair nice and soft!

I'm also going to have to start swimming every day... 4 days till summer vacation! I want to stay in shape and swimming is an excellent way to do so (as I'm sure you know, bikerbraid!) Anyway, your method seems to be the best I've heard of so far. Is there any way I can do this without having to shampoo my hair every day? My hair tends to be extremely dry and I can only wash it about 2-3 times a week. Swimming caps give me a headache  Undecided and also the water always leaks through. Would it be ok to just open the braid and wash the conditioner out after swimming, or would there still be chlorine in the hair?

There will most likely still be chlorine in your hair.  You could probably still just wash it every other day as long as you rinse your hair out with water after being in the pool - but it may still be dry from the chlorine anyway - deep conditioning a lot during the summer would help (I've got dry coarse curly hair myself) - doing something like put on a conditioner and leave it on for about half an hour - with heat on it if you can - before rinsing it out will help your cuticle heal from having the chlorine exposure

the other thing is that sunlight will make the whole thing worse - so if you are able to keep your hair out of the sun if you have not washed the chlorine out of it, then it would be a big help

If your hair tends to be dry, I'd say just rinse your hair very well after swimming.  If that is not enough, try just conditioning your hair.  Most conditioners will actually clean your hair rather well.  Dilute the conditioner first, then run it through your hair and rinse.

What will work for you depends on several factors - your hair, the types of chemicals used in the pool, the concentration of the chemicals used, and the amount of oil or conditioner used to "pre-treat" your hair.  Experiment a bit and I am sure you will find a combination that will work for you.

Thanks both of you for your help!

Space_Cadet, I do deep condition my hair quite often. I leave it on overnight once a week, which is around 8 hours usually. Would you say that's enough, or should I deep condition every time I wash my hair? And how exactly would I apply heat, would you say wrap a hot towel around my head or blow dry or...?

I usually stay out of the sun at this time of year. Over here it's monsoon season almost, so it rains a lot, otherwise it's really hot and sunny and you can hardly see when you go out!

Bikerbraid, I had to swim for three weeks as a school requirement, but it was only 2-3 times a week. I would wear a swim cap and rinse my hair out with conditioner afterwards, which did seem to clean my hair quite well. The reason I would not wash with shampoo is because we aren't given enough time to shower and change, and it takes at least 10 minutes to properly wash my hair since it's long and quite thick. I'll try just rinsing it out and using quite a bit of conditioner before swimming and hopefully it'll go well! Thanks again for your help  Grin!

Yes - once a week is what I normally do - basically it depends on your hair type, you can do it more often if you like how it feels, less if you think you're hair is doing well enough

For heat I actually have a bonnet that goes over my head (I put a cheap plastic shower cap over my hair and then this more durable bonnet) and it has a hose coming down from it that I put over my hair dryer and then turn the dryer on low heat and this way it's like sitting under one of those professional hair dryers with heat on my hair with the conditioner in - I think the bonnet only ran me about $20 or so, and I use it all the time for this, it's great!  I got that at www.ouidad.com too

Great ideas that I will be using too. Thanks!  On the showering with hard water issue. They make shower head filter systems, I got mine at the home depot. Not too expensive and you change the filter depending on how often you use it. It really made a difference in my hair. Soap and shampoo lathers much better as well. Hard water has so much junk in it, including chlorine. My skin doesn't get so dry either.  I used to love to go to my ex-MIL's  p north, she had well water. I was always guaranteed a great hair day!

I know that you don't live in the US so I will see if I can find it online. I think a company called Gaiam might have one.

I will post a link if I can find it.
