lego's routine!!!
Nov 22nd, 2004 at 5:16am

Right now my hair is measuring at 19 and a half inches. I have been dusting my hair every few days trying to get rid of the split ends. I use a wide toothed comb and a boar bristle brush, but I don't use it but a few days a week. Every other day I wash my scalp with herbal shampoo and then sometimes use infusium 23 leave in treatment on my ends. When I go to bed I either put my hair in a bun or braid it. Once a week I try to use hot oil treatments for permed or colored hair which I have both. And I have just recently learned you can leave it in all day. Last week I left it in for about an hour. Twice now I have almost went and chopped off a few more inches off my hair but I didn't thank god!!!! And I'm taking LOTS of vitamins. If anyone has any extra suggestions please post. Oh and I so am going to try jojoba oil as soon as I get some money, but it might be a little bit first I'm just about to move and that takes a lot of money UGGGGG. But thats ok I have spent quite a bit of money on my hair in the past few weeks.

Alright I'm getting back into my routine of putting my hair up before bed. But lastnight i twisted my hair too much and i broke a hair, it got twisted around my finger. It was upsetting. But now for my question are conditioner washes good for the hair? I read somewhere that using too much conditioner too often will dry the hair out so I don't even use conditioner anymore. I do use leave in treatments though. And I had my hubby measure my hair and it was 19 and 3/4 inches. I can't wait till it gets long again, it's driving me crazy.

I see that you use the Infusium 23 leave-in, I just started using that, too.  Just wondering how you like it, I'm not too sure that I'm overly blown-away by it so far.  In the past I've used the Biolage leave-in, but I picked up infusium while I was grocery shopping to see if I would like it, because it's about half the price, but I also think it's only woking half as well!  Curious as to your thoughts on it....

Hi Lego,

Just a thought; what kind of herbal shampoo are you using?  Do you know what the ingredients are?  That might be a good place to start looking if you are experiencing more splits.

Glad you're journaling! It is such fun!

Thats a lot to type. I was trying to get something with natural stuff in it.

I do strictly conditioner wash. I've never had it dry out my hair.

Sometimes I read where someone tried it and it didn't work, but they were using a conditioner that I know didn't work for me. Other times I read someone used some sort of a technique I find less effective. I also read where someone says they tried it, but doesn't even say which conditioner they used, so how can you tell? So lots of the time, people try once and give up too quick.

The first time I CO washed, I used the VO5 I had around my house. It left my hair feeling greasy but dry (ick). So I went out and bought VO5 Kiwi Lime, which over a period of weeks made my scalp break out until I abandoned it. Then I found Suave Daily Clarifying conditioner, and since then I've also used VO5 Free Me Freesia and VO5 Hydrators.

When I do a scalp wash, it's once with one of these conditioners. When I wash in the shower, I end up stacking several conditioners, as I'm a conditioner junkie.

Also, the products I've tried that worked were all cheap. I think when you pay extra for a conditioning product, you're paying $$$ for the extra residue they'll leave on your hair, and you're hoping this is a good thing. Roll Eyes

Well I went out lastnight to Walmart and got some suave condition. I bought the naturals milk and honey and daily clarifying. I tryed the honey and milk and I liked it, it made my hair very soft. But I still can't figure out the conditioner only wash, I tryed it but it left my hair dirty so I went ahead and washed it.

I think I am doing something wrong with the CO wash. I tryed it and my scalp was dirty and greasy. Since I wasn't sure how to do it I went ahead and put it all over my hair and scalp, used it as if it were shampoo but it didn't help. Does it take a few times of doing it for the hair to get used to it? Help please!!!!!

I don't know if the Suave milk and honey conditioner would work for CO washing, as I haven't tried that one. I avoid anything that sounds like it might have protein in it (milk, for instance). Try VO5 Free Me Freesia or Hydrators, both very cheap.

I only CO wash, whether it is a scalp wash or a full-length wash. I think it would probably be ok to shampoo my scalp (actually, that would probably be 4-6" the way I do it), but I don't think "probably" is enough reason to change from products I like that are working for me.

eKatherine--do you deep condition?  If so, how do you wash out the deep conditioner w/ c/o washing?

If I deep condition with coconut oil (just enough to dampen the hair, not enough to make it drippy), I find it comes out more easily with my standard cleansing conditioner than with shampoo. Who'd'a thunk it?

I haven't tryed oiling yet, but I have been doing hot oil treatments from walmart. I posted on the long hair care forum. It was about recipes I found to make your own stuff with things in your refridgearator, or cabnets. But here I'll post the site page and yall can tell me what you think.

They use a lot of olive oil there. I know some people like it, but lots of people find it impossible to wash out, or find that it makes their hair crunchy. My impression is that it's hard to put on just a little bit, too.

I recommend using coconut oil for your oil treatments, and you can mix it with jojoba. Nut oils such as sweet almond, apricot kernal, macadamia, and walnut oil are light, too.

Read the ingredients list on your "hot oil" treatments. Lots of products labeled "hot oil" don't actually contain oil, rather other ingredients that they think will condition your hair.

Oh and does anyone know the difference between jojoba oil and (jojoba) seed oil? I bought the sauve milk and honey conditioner and one of the ingredients in it is Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) seed oil.

Can anyone tell me how to clean my wood boar bristle brush? I haven't had it that long but it does need to be cleaned, and I have never cleaned any of my brushes before. Oh and what are some other good oils to buy other than jojoba?

I'd like to know the answer to that, too, as I just bought
one.   I like jojoba oil the best, so far for my hair.  I don't
know the difference between that and jojoba seed oil.
Sorry I'm no help!!

Jojoba oil and jojoba seed oil are the same thing.  The oil comes from the seed (sometimes referred to as the bean or fruit) of the jojoba plant.

Simmondsia Chinensis is the botanical name for the jojoba plant.

some people advise lukewarm diluted vinegar but i tried that on mine and it left a nasty smell to it cuze mine contains rubber or whatever plastic. maybe it works for one with just wood and hair. but if you don't want to risk it: shampoo will do just fine.

Thanks everyone I'm still a little new at proper hair care. I'll have to try that on my brush styg thanks. I actually found a 4 oz bottle of jojoba oil on a web site for 4.50 seems like the lowest price I have found yet.

Well I have tryed the co washing but I don't like it doesn't clean my scalp and it makes it a little greasy if I do it. So today I C Scalp wash then C, I'll see how I like that. And I'm also doing a single braid in the shower before i get out while its still dripping then blot my hair with a towel after I get out, well see how I like doing that at least when I have to go out other wise I'll leave it down when I'm going to be home all day.

Is pantine good for your hair or bad? I have seen comercials for there over night treatment and was wondering if it was any good. My mother-in-law how doesn't know anything says that pantine is bad for your hair because it has acrylic in it and she says that is bad for the hair, does any one know if this is true? If not I'm going to buy me some!

I found a new hobby while growing my hair out!!! I found some patterns for crocheting hair accessorys (can't spell) I made me a hair scarf. I don't like the first I made but I was working on one but the pattern seems to be a little messed up so I'll just have to keep working on it. But I am going to go buy me some burgandy yarn and make this: http://web.archive.org/web/20010105080700/www.cancrochet.dhs.org/rwfilet_kerchie... or at least I'm going to try.

I think there is quite a debate about Pantene on this site because of the 'cones they use.

I've found them to be good up to a certain point - when my hair gets too weighed down and I have to switch to something else. Haven't tried the overnight stuff, but I'd be curious about it. I didn't know Pantene had acrylic in it. That's news to me!

I love the hair scarf! Let us know how you get on with making that!

Lego,
I really like the aussie "Three minute miracle"  It's a bit more than a regular conditioner, but not as heavy as a mask.  I also like the Pantene restorative treatment, which is great for a deep condition and only takes five minutes.

Let me know what you think of the Aussie products!

I think it is the George Michael hair care routine.  I don't know much about it; there was a thread maybe a month back that explained it a little.  What I do know, is that he is practically the only big name stylist that likes long hair and has designed products and salon treatments specifically for long hair.  He also believes that all hair should be the same length, so no bangs or layers.

Lego- look at this site: www. georgemichael-longhair.com/tips it explains the GM philosophy on long hair.  I don't necesarrily believe it myself, having no had
all one length hair for such a long time, I could'nt say
if my hair was better or not that way.

I found the george micheal site and it told me that brushing one hundred strokes is good for the hair but I have read other stuff that says it is bad for the hair? I understand why it is good and why it is bad but kinda leaves one wondering what to do. Als o the the GM site it said that when having long hair it is better to get your hair cut when it is washed and dry. I have never heard this before, I thought it was damaging to the hair to cut it dry and also doesn't cut straight? The one thing i found one the site I like is a recipe for deep conditioner to make at home. But I think I like my 3 minute reconstructive condtioner by aussie, makes my hair very soft. It has lots of oils in it esspecially jojoba seed oil.

I don't brush my hair, its just too fine and delicate, and
I get lots of splits if I do.  There are some who advocate
brushing the hair, and some who don't.  Also, my hair
is not stick straight, and I like to encourage the waves
and brushing it  takes themout.  I think in the old days,
they didn't have conditioner and needed to brush that
much to get the sebum down to the ends.  Now we have
essential oils and conditioners.  I do scalp massages
instead to encourage circulation to the scalp.  I'm
not saying I disagree with GM, I would love to visit a
salon one day!! I'm just scared to brush my hair that
much.

As far as cutting dry, my hairdresser trims mine dry.
I don't know why that would be better, though.  Next

I wouldn't recommend baby oil - it is a mineral oil that is too heavy for most hair and would not be absorbed into the hair shaft (molecules are too big).  Vegetable and plant oils are much better for your hair.

Hello all! Went to the hubbys aunts house for a visit and one of his cousins was there with her very long pretty hair made me want long hair even more.

Does the damage ever stop? I have been dusting and dusting and I seem to just keep finding more and more everytime, especially new splits. It makes me sick. I sleep with my hair up everynight, shampoo every three to four days, been using better products with lots of vitamins, taking lots of vitamins, using better comb and brush, only brush before i shampoo, use a leave in conditioner and instead of combing it and having tangles I use the leave in condtioner before I comb. But I still seem to be having new splits. Any suggestions???

I know that feeling! See my hair journal...it has a long history of trimming splits.

But there's really no other way than trimming to get rid of damage that has already occurred. Your good haircare routine will hopefully reduce splits in future. Though I think, that some hairtypes are more prone to splitting than others.
When I noticed that my split end situation was bad, I took it as a project to trim at least a certain amount of splits every day. It really worked- finally!

I measured my hair yesterday and I had an inch of growth this month. My haired measured at 19 1/2 before i got it cut last month after it was cut it was 19 1/4 and now it is a little more than 20 1/4. So I will wait till this weekend and hopefully go to an old friend and get a good trim but a small one. This is the one person I can say cut 1/2 and inch and thats all she cuts.

I am very pleased with my hair growth!!!! I guess the GNC hair vitamins are helping. Grin

Does anyone know of any other hair vitamins that are in bulk more than 60 in the bottle but are too pricey? I have been taking GNC's ultra nourishair which works fine but i thought maybe I could find something maybe same price with more vitamins in the bottle.

Well I didn't get to oil my hair this weekend because I had to spend my money on getting my car fixed to keep it in good running condition, I guess it was worth it though. Its really driving me crazy though that i didnt get to do anything with my hair this weekend, so I am trying to go as long as possible without washing my hair so that I can get the oils down to the ends and hope that will be good enough till fridays payday then I can buy some more oil for this weekend. My only problem is my scalp is already starting to itch and it has only been three days since my last wash. I don't know if im going to make it too much longer because I don't want to end up scratching my scalp all up.  Sad

Well I have made it through the day without washing or scratching my scalp to pieces. I also cut splits and did a trim, I probably trimed less than 1/8 of an inch, I'm not sure hom much that is but I just wanted to grab new splits.  Wink

My hair came out soft but then I did leave conditioner sitting in it.

I bought my self a hair toy today of course it is just a head band but it is very comfortable. I broke my old one so i had to replace it Grin, and after i washed the conditioner out of my hair I found a bunch of old hair bands without metal and some clips, so I got something new and then found some that I already had just had forgotten about.

I did another mayo conditioning today for my monthly deep conditioning, was a few days late but man it felt good to get my scalp really clean and condition really good my hair was starting to feel dry. After washing out the mayo I use my Aloe conditioner from herba life. I won 100 dollars of free products so I got thier shampoo and conditioner great stuff, and then I used my leave in conditioner and my hair feels soft again its amazing what a little bit of mayo can do!!!

Need Help!!!!

I have changed the way I brush my hair, comb it, wash it, and condition it but I still have a ton of splits. I give my hair very special care and I still end up with the same amount of splits as before. I havent been trimming off the splits because it thins my hair out so bad I might as well cut it off so I'm just letting it grow. Maybe someone can help me?

How do you keep your hair when you sleep?  Is it possible that your hair is getting tangled, causing splits at night?

I usually sleep with it up unless I have silk pillow cases on. Could my son be causing it? He always has his hands in my hair playing with it, it is his security blanket.

If your son is pulling or tangling your hair, it could be causing damage.

I notice that you use Infusium 23.  This product is heavy with -cones.  Maybe you should work in a few vinegar rinses to remove any buildup of this product.  If you have a -cone build up, it can cause breakage.
