Avacado Oil
Dec 14th, 2004 at 2:29pm

Has anyone ever tried Avacado Oil??

I was in the NutKeg today (local organic shop) and their oils caught my eye. They had Avacado Oil for sale in a wee bottle. Also Chamomile Oil. I didn't even know there was such a thing!

Just wondering if anyone has any testimonials on either.

Cheers!

Yup... I've tried avocado, macadamia nut, hemp, and grapeseed. Avocado is wonderful but it has a funky smell though.. Tongue Nothing serious, it's a weird leaflike fresh scent. There used to be an Yves Rocher oil that smelled like avocado oil I think, an "aloe vera oil" (apparently it was an aloe extract put into an oil)
From what I remember, avocado is a little heavier than jojoba but lighter than macadamia (I used macadamia yesterday with wonderful results. It was slicker than most oils and didn't absorb too quickly, so it was easier to apply)

As for chamomile, I suspect it might lighten your hair a bit.

The macadamia sounds interesting! I think I just might go out and buy that Avacado oil. I could use it for overnight oil treatments to be washed out in the morning so that I don't smell too "lady of the forest".

It's funny that you mentioned Grapeseed. I was looking at a big bottle of that for cooking in the shop as well and I wondered how that would fare on my head. I'd say it's rather light, yes?

And hemp oil! (You are a well seasoned oiler!)
How did you like that? I was in the Body Shop a few weeks ago and found this lovely Hemp hand cream. It was SOO heavy though. Nearly impossible to wash off. But since I break out in eczema on my hands every winter, I was tempted to buy it for the protection!
The only thing that turned me off was the smell.  Tongue

Hemp oil is sold unrefined and you have to keep it in the fridge otherwise it goes bad Tongue I wouldn't use it on hair unless you've verified with the vendor that it doesn't need refridgeration.

Some grapeseed oils, depending on the vendor, have a very short shelf life. I wouldn't use it for leave-in oiling... but it would be teriffic for prewash! Grin

How about olive oil for your hair? That's easy enough to find in grocery stores, in my little po-dunk town. I'd have to go to "the big cittah" to find these other oils, though.

i would never try olive as a "leave in" in my fine hair but some people with coarse hair love it. i think anyone could probably use it for hot oil treatments though, but i heard it's difficult to wash out, and if one needs several shampooings to get rid of it, at what did it serve then me wonders?

First, I want to say that cooking oils probably should not be used on hair because they are processed much differently than oils used for hair. Use a natural oil for personal use. That is my recommendation. Also, I used olive oil on my thick strait hair and I could not get it out for days! I used a little too much but it would not come out when I shampooed it over and over. I had to go out in public looking like a grease ball! If you use olive oil, use SPARINGLY or else you will end up like me.
