Question about clarifying
Apr 29th, 2006 at 2:38pm

I've never really done anything to clarify my hair and I was wondering what you guys use. I'm thinking it might improve my hair a little. I think sometimes I may use too much conditioner, not really sure if that's a bad thing or not but I've heard you should clarify occasionally if you do. What are the best products to use?
Thanks  Smiley

I use a clarifying shampoo and a vinegar rinse. One after the other.

In my experience, I've found Pantene Purity to be the best clarifying shampoo. Herbal Essences also makes a few good ones.

For a vinegar rinse, I pour a little vinegar (I don't measure or anything) into a 1L bottle, and the rest cold water. Shake it up to mix & voilą.

Probably Suave shampoos , since they don't have "cones" and I think they contain lauryl sulfate which is derived from coconuts and clarifies. And follow up with a vinegra/water rinse. I make it half vinegar half water and prefer apple cider vinegar!

I've used Aussie Mega Shampoo followed by a vinegar rinse for my clarifying routine.  This has worked well when I have used products with -cones in them.

When I've been avoiding the -cones, just the vinegar rinse is all that I need for clarifying.

I use Chagrin Valley shampoo bars and use a mild ACV rinse after every wash to balance pH.

Every 3 months or so, I do a stronger clarifying treatment (this is what you'd use if you want to clarify
for the first time):
1. To do this treatment, you will need a gentle, cone free conditioner (natural product), baking soda and a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment (I use Snowy's Deep Moisture Treatment, which can be mixed at home).

2. Go to the shower and wet the hair normally. Pour a really big clump of conditioner on your palm. Add 1 tbsp or so of baking soda and mix it with conditioner. Put the treatment to your scalp and rub gently. It feels really weird, but don't worry. I usually need two handfuls of the treatment to completely cover my scalp and hair.

3. Rinse well. Your hair will be squeaking clean. After you have rinsed thoroughly, get out of the shower and blot dry your hair gently. It is now fragile, be careful!

4. Apply deep conditioning treatment normally. This is a very important step: clarifying with baking soda strips your hair of moisture along with buildup, so you will need to moisturize it effectively immediately after the baking soda treatment.

I don't use chemicals or stuff that is supposed to cause buildup, but neverthless I've noticed that doing this kind of clarifying treatment a few times a year makes my hair look and feel great. You shouldn't do this treatment too often though- once in a few months is probably enough.
