my hair grows OUT not DOWN!
May 28th, 2006 at 4:44pm

Hello everyone!

I have VERY thick and straight hair.

I'm trying to grow it long but it seems to grow OUT more than DOWN - it looks absurd!

It just seems the longer that it gets the thicker it seems to get!

Do you have any tips on how I can continue to grow it longer and keep it looking straighter and less "poofy" and "bushy"?!

Thanks a lot in advance!

Welcome!

Thick bushy hair seems to benefit most from doing the least to it.  Avoid brushing your hair, except just before washing.  Try finger combing or using a wide toothed comb or pick while your hair is damp to define your natural waves and curls.

Using leave in conditioners or oils can also help reduce the poofiness. They add weight to the hair and help make it more manageable.  Try to keep the oils or conditioners just on the length of the hair, not on the scalp or your hair will get that greasy look.

If your hair seems dry, you might try eliminating your shampoo entirely, and use just light conditioners to clean your hair.

I'm sure some of the others here will chime in with their suggestions as well.

Hi!  I had to think how to respond to your dilema because my hair used to grow out and not down, too!  This was many years ago,but as I let it grow;the weight of it made it relax down and not be so out of control.  It was course, wavy and very fustrating.  Then poof,it started to spiral curl and do a total turn a round!!  I was using Nexxus Therapy and Humectress and the Liquid Gel by Nexxus and I think that made it "behave" better.
Have patience and take care of your hair and it will take care of you by being your crowning glory!

I know that kind of hair very well, half of my hair (the underhair) is that way.  Huh
A widetooth comb is, as Bikerbraid says  Smiley , a very good suggestion. On me it makes the tangles go away but still allows the curls to stay together. If I force them to divide my hair goes... well, OUT.  Tongue

This may not be the answer you wanted to hear but with time (years) hair will become weighed down by the weight of your hair and will be less poofy, however in the meantime try discover what oils and butters your hair loves, this should tame it somewhat. I also found c/o washed helped me but after a while i went back to shampoo due to build up and irritation
